Join us at Gateway's First Friday
We've started a new community gathering for the whole school this year on the first Friday of each month. We've enjoyed short presentations by a different faculty member each month, and coming up in March Kaia Huseby will be our presenter. Because there is no school on the first Friday in March our "First Friday" gathering will be held on Friday, March 11th, from 8:45 - 9:00 a.m. Kaia tells us that "with the recent Brain Rules book discussion, the annual conference on Learning & the Brain, and Dr. John Medina's visit, the theme this month is, very appropriately, The Brain. Our class will be sharing important facts about the brain and I will be sharing a bit too." Please join us on the playground for this community gathering (rain postpones it to the following week).

International Spring Celebration
Gateway School will host our first International Spring Celebration on Thursday March 24th. The arrival of spring is celebrated in cultures throughout the world and represents a time of growth, renewal, and of new life (both plant and animal) being born.
In the inaugural year of our International Spring Celebration, we will introduce the community to the traditional Persian celebration of Norooz, or New Day. Norooz marks the first day of spring and is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox.
This year, Gateway's celebration will have two major components - a morning assembly for parents, faculty and students, and an all-school potluck in which we invite families to share food from a meaningful tradition in their experiences, hopefully associated with the spring.
We are soliciting parent volunteers to help by:
- Bringing a dish that is meaningful to your family to share with the community as part of our potluck luncheon.
- Baking traditional breads (e.g., naan, tortilla, pita, etc.) that will be passed around after the Norooz celebration, on which students can taste different herbs and spices from the Life Lab garden.
- Hosting a stand where you can introduce the community to a spring celebration that you cherish.
If you are interested, please e-mail us at internationalspring2011@gatewaysc.org.

The generosity of caring
Its March and we're turning toward spring. The days are getting longer, we have mindfulness practices being introduced to the children, and a best selling author coming to deepen our understanding of how brain research can be applied to our daily lives. We are all so fortunate to be a part of this school community that is enthusiastically engaged and committed to developing healthy, happy and confident children who are exploring the world, learning new things, and making a difference in the lives of others.
We've seen such compassion from the children this year as they've created, and participated in, many extra community service activities as part of our 40th Anniversary "40 Acts of Kindness" to our community. Recently the first graders delivered cookies to downtown businesses and public servants and right now the 7th graders are leading a Pet Supplies drive. Have you see their hand-decorated boxes in each classroom? Our children's actions reflect how being generous is joyful and inspiring. We are in the final weeks of preparing for the 2011 Auction Gala and on-line auction. Warm thanks to all the parents whose participation, in a variety of ways, has been a great example of our generous adult community. From taking lead in planning all aspects of the event to helping on class projects, donating items, securing business donations, becoming sponsors, buying tickets and underwriting faculty seats, many, many Gateway families are bringing the IMAGINE auction gala to life.
Proceeds from IMAGINE support the financial aid program at Gateway and a portion of proceeds will support the Beach Flats Community Center (BFCC), which serves families and children in the Beach Flats neighborhood. You can be a part of imagining a bright future for our children and the children of Beach Flats by reserving your tickets today! "Let the thankful heart sweep through the day." - Henry Ward Beecher. |

Family Weekend May 6-7, 2011 Grandparents Day May 6th Art Tour & Spring Concert Sat. May 7, 2011
If you are interested in helping with Grandparents Day, please contact George Delli-Santi georgeds.gpa@gmail.com
We have now secured our new location for this year's Spring Concert - Crocker Theater at Cabrillo College! We had to find a new venue this year, since last year, our seating could not accommodate everyone that attended. In addition, the concert falls on Grandparent's Weekend, so we are expecting even more people than usual. Please save the date!! Saturday, May 7, 2011. Showtimes are 2:30 (R1, C2, K3, K4, B5) and 4:30 (J1, P2, J/H3, S4, T5). Kindergarten families have received a separate email detailing the showtime that your child is in, since Emily and Liz's classes are mixed for music class. You will be be receiving communications from your room parents soon to find out if there are ways you can help out on the big day. Thank you! -Kristin Allen, Music Teacher, Gateway School |

NEW Water Garden Design Project
We have a special project that is being designed specifically for Gateway School's Life Lab Garden. We will be installing a grey water system to treat and re-use water from our outdoor garden kitchen for hand watering in the garden. The goal is to keep our precious resources, like water, on the farm. We will use an ecologically-based management system with emergent plants in tiered 3-pond biofiltration system to treat the water from the outdoor kitchen sinks, which will then be conveyed through a hand pump to watering cans and used to water the garden beds. As part of the Life Lab Garden the water system will educate students about local, regional, and international water issues. Incorporating a hand pump into the design is fun for our students; it also helps give them first-hand experience on how millions of people through out the world retrieve water on a daily basis. We had originally planned on breaking ground on this project this coming weekend, however, due to the recent heavy rains we have decided it best to postpone this project until Saturday May 14th and Sunday May 15th. In next weeks newsletter you will find a link to more detailed information and an on-line sign up form for this project. We hope you will be able to join us! |
