Auction News
Look for the first newsletter about IMAGINE, the 2011 Auction Gala, sent home in Wednesday folders (k-5) and electronically for MS parents.
West Cliff Room Improvements are Complete -- Thanks to the parents who donated to last year's Auction Gala Fund-A-Need we have been able to improve the multi-media capability of the Music Room. We have been able to install a fully functional multimedia audio/video system in the West Cliff room. This system is comprised of a high-powered LCD projector, a mechanical projection screen, a DVD/VCR, and a CD/MP3 player (with iPod interface) all wired through a 1200-watt amplifier and 12-channel professional soundboard and then piped through a set of professional JBL, wall mounted speakers.  We were also able to purchase a 15-inch sub-woofer and 2 powered monitors that will double as our speakers for outdoor events.  Many thanks to the expert sound engineering and generous discounts provided by Rob DeHart's AV Now and a special thank you to AV Now employee KarlHeebner for all his help through the process. We are so grateful to have these upgrades which enhance our program.

The Fund-a-Need for the 2011 Gala will fund the Mindfulness Practice In-Classroom Training by Mindful Schools. For more information or if you are interested in making a donation please contact Meg Corman-Hall at meg.corman-hall@gatewaysc.org or ext 312.

Financial Aid for the 2011-2012 School Year

If you would like to apply for aid for the 2011-2012 school year, please click on this link  for the complete packet of forms and instructions.  In order to apply for aid, you must file a Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) with School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS).  We recommend that parents file this form online, but parents can choose to file the paper PFS form instead if they prefer.  To file online, go to sss.nais.org anytime from November 15th onward; to file the paper form, print out pages 16-21 from the attached financial aid packet and follow the directions in the packet.  The Main Office also has a limited supply of paper PFS forms.  In addition to filing your PFS, you must also upload or mail to SSS a
copy of your complete 2010 tax return.  We recommend that parents start preparing now to get their 2010 taxes done as early as possible during the month of February 2011, and file the PFS by February 1, 2011.   As long as your PFS is filed by February  1, 2011 and the copy of your complete 2010 tax return is received by SSS by February 25, 2011,  your application will be considered for the first round of financial aid awards (the round in which the bulk of our financial aid budget is awarded). If you are divorced, separated or never married, please be aware that each parent must file a separate PFS and each parent must submit a copy of his or her complete 2010 tax return to SSS. Please contact Rima in the Business Office at x 308 if you have any questions.

Terence Roberts will be the featured speaker for the 27th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation on Monday, January 31st at 7:00 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church Street , Santa Cruz .

In 1957, Mr. Roberts was among a group of students who were the first African Americans ever to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock , Arkansas . Mr. Roberts' 2009 memoir, Lessons from Little Rock , details his childhood in the segregated South and is a testament to the personal resolve that he and each member of the "Little Rock Nine" used to survive their first days at Central High.  Roberts is also the author of "Simple, Not Easy: Reflections on Community Social Responsibility and Tolerance."

The event is sponsored by UCSC and is intended to bring together UC Santa Cruz students, faculty, staff, and members of our wider community for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation.

The event is free of charge and open to the public; no advance ticketing is required.
