ERB Tests Next Week - On Monday, September 21st, we will begin administering our ERB tests to students in grades 3 - 8.  Tests will be given in the mornings through Thursday. The tests provide us with important data on how well your child is progressing in his/her studies, how effectively our curriculum addresses some of the key indicators of educational achievement, and how well our students fare against other independent and suburban schools on this nationally normed test.  It is essential that students attend school during testing days.  (Children who miss school because of sickness are able to sit for the tests during make-up days.)   We all remember how tiring it was to sit for these types of standardized tests.  As such, we appreciate your sending your children to school well rested and well nourished so that they are physically and mentally prepared for the tests.

Reminder to RSVP for the New Families Reception - for new and host families - Friday, Sept. 25th 5:30 - 7:30pm. Invitations were mailed 2 weeks ago.  Please RSVP to Kristin at x332 or kristin.smith@gatewaysc.org

Peace & Plenty All School Gathering - Thursday, Oct. 1st at 1:10pm.  Parents, come celebrate the fall harvest with a music performance and scrumptious bread made by our students.  The students all have time in our Life Lab Garden during the morning learning about wheat and grinding wheat berries in to flour.  Students will be making a new kind of bread this year under the generous direction of 8th grade parent Mark Sanchez of Kelly's Bakery. Volunteers are still needed for Peace and Plenty to help with bread making, baking, and supervising children while they form loaves. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jeremy at jeremy.king@gatewaysc.org

Book Fair Oct. 8th and 9th during Goal Setting Conferences.  Volunteers are needed for set up and during the fair.  If you are interested in helping with the fair, please contact Merle at merle.froshman@gatewaysc.org.  For more information about our book fair and some of the books that will be available, please visit www.scholastic.com/bookfairs.

Swine Flu (H1N1) Guidelines
As you may know, flu can be easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu at Gateway. We want to keep the school open to students and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season. But, we need your help to do this. It is vital that we work together to keep our children healthy. Please, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the below guidelines.

 1. If your child has a fever over 100 degrees, they may not attend school. Please wait 24 hours after the fever has gone before returning to school.

2. If a child develops a fever at school, we will contact you immediately, and request that you come to school to take her home.

3. If your child or someone in your household has a diagnosed case of H1N1, please immediately notify us. If your child has contracted H1N1, please keep your child home for one week plus 24 hours after she is symptom free.

4. Please review hand washing at home and make it a habit with your children. Likewise, please encourage your child to use tissues instead of sleeves, throw tissues away in trash receptacles and that coughing into the elbow is preferred rather than the hand.
