Mindset for the Journey

Pray, thanking God for His written Word.  Ask Him to reveal the unique message He has for you in the primary passage of Scripture for each study.  Read the mindset passage 2 or 3 times. Make the deliberate choice to fix your thoughts on each word and each phrase as you read it. Don't let your mind wander.  Focus only on God's truth and let everything else fall away. Your mind is set and you are ready to begin.

Philippians 3:20  But our homeland is in heaven, and we are waiting for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven.
Day 1.  Facts for the Journey
A Glimpse of Heaven

The bible tells us that we will have a new body in heaven.  What will that body look like?
Will we look anything like we do on earth?  How?  Will we have emotions?  This week, we will examine the new body we will have in heaven.

1.  Our new body will be real.   Philippians 3:20 (NCV)  But our homeland is in heaven, and we are waiting for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven.

2. Our new body will be recognizable.  Philippians 3:21 (NCV) By His power to rule all things, He will change our simple bodies and make them like his own glorious body.

3. Our new body will be perfect.  Matthew 26:41 (NCV) The spirit wants to do what is right, but the body is weak.

Perfection is for heaven - not earth - especially when talking about our physical bodies. A friend just had some major dental work done, part of which was a new bridge. Sarah went in and the dentist made molds in order to construct the permanent bridge so that it would fit perfectly.  Making the permanent bridge took several weeks because this dentist is a perfectionist.  He fitted Sarah with a temporary bridge while he created the permanent one.  Sarah called to see when it would be ready and was told to "be patient."  The doctor assured her that the permanent bridge would be worth the wait.

Our earthly body is temporary, limited and flawed.  Romans 7:24 (NIV) What a miserable man I am! Who will save me from this body that brings me death?  However, our new body is eternal, without flaw and perfect. What this imperfect world has taken from our physical body will be restored to us in our heavenly body!  My mom was paralyzed on earth but now she can walk in heaven. My friend, Beth, could not eat on earth but is now having a feast.  Blind men can see and deaf people can hear.  Everything that is wrong here, in our earthly body, will be made right and perfect in our heavenly body.

4.  We will still have emotions and feelings. In Luke 24:36-39 Jesus himself stood right in the middle of them and said, "Peace be with you."  They were fearful and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.  But Jesus said, "Why are you troubled? Why do you doubt what you see?  Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself!" Jesus came back to see the people He loved - His disciples.  Knowing they were afraid, He comforted and reassured them that hope was still alive because He was still alive!  The same Jesus they had laughed with, cried with and served with was standing in front of them, loving them just as He always had. All of this indicates great emotions. Our relationships will be deeper and our emotions more intense in heaven than they ever were on earth.

5.  We will be smarter in heaven. 1 Corinthians 13:12 (NCV)  Now we see a dim reflection, as if we were looking into a mirror, but then we shall see clearly.  Now I know only a part, but then I will know fully, as God has known me.

In an Ann Landers column, someone wrote in describing a funeral they had attended for a leading citizen of their small town.  The preacher gave a great eulogy listing all the virtues of the man who was his friend, ending his speech with this final word, "We have here only the shell. The nut is gone."  Some Christians are afraid that once they get to heaven, they will lose all knowledge and awareness of earthly relationships and interests.  We place too much importance on this earthly shell.  It merely houses the eternal part of who we are.  1 Corinthians 12:12 clearly indicates that we will have more understanding and knowledge in heaven.  Heaven is a place that we will enjoy.
  • World travel will be unlimited.
  • Our creativity will thrive.
  • Our questions will be answered.
  • Our understanding will grow.
  • Our vision will flourish.
  • We see the whole picture.

Scientists believe that even a genius like Einstein used only 10% of his mental potential but in heaven, we will use it all - every gift and ability - to its fullest.

6.  We will still be us.  When God created us, He created us for eternity.  Psalm 139:14-16  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.  My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,  your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

C.S. Lewis was asked by a reporter during World War II what he would think if the Germans were to drop a bomb right on top of him. "If you only had time for one last thought, what would it be?"   Lewis replied, "I would look up at the bomb, stick my tongue out at it and say, "Pooh! You are only a bomb! I'm an immortal soul!"

Every day, we are building the house of character and the essence of the final person we will be for all eternity. With every choice we make and every step we take, we are making a deposit on the identity that we will live with forever!  When we invite Jesus into our lives, eternal life begins.  When we get to heaven, Christ will remove all of the sin in our life but we will still have those characteristics which make us unique as individuals. One example of this is seen in the life of  Elijah, the prophet who spent his whole life fighting evil and idolatry.

Malachi 4:5  See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.  He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.

The prophet Malachi identifies Elijah as one of two witnesses who will appear to fight against the Antichrist and his army during the Tribulation at the Battle of Armageddon. Just as he fought against King Ahab, Queen Jezebel and the prophets of Baal, he will fight against the forces of evil!

Colossians 3:12-17  (NLT) 12-17  Since God chose you to be the holy people whom he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. You must make allowance for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.  And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love. Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are all called to live in peace. And always be thankful.  Let the words of Christ, in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you wise. Use his words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.  And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus, all the while giving thanks through him to God the Father.

Do you like the character that you are building for eternity? The choice is yours today. You can know Him. You can invite Him into your life right now.

Praying WomanDay 2.  Prayer for the Journey

Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. Matthew 7:7

It is one of the most frequently quoted of all passages from the Bible, and the one that we most hope is true, at least the first seven words: "Ask, and it will be given you." What can be more assuring than believing we will receive whatever we ask for? It seems like we have just won the sweepstakes of heaven and can go shopping there with abandon, choosing anything we want from the overstocked shelves. Unfortunately, this reduces prayer to nothing more than a medium of exchange, rather than the sharing of a relationship of the deepest richness.

We are unable to see all the nuances, subtle needs and intricate patterns of our lives that shift like mirrors in a kaleidoscope. But the Holy One who created us in the tenderness of unconditional love not only sees those nuances, needs, and patterns, but is ready to care for them in ways more meaningful and lasting than we could ever imagine on our own. God always has our best interest at heart. And yet, we are told to ask and seek and knock. Why? Because when we ask, we are expressing our desire to communicate with the Holy One. When we seek, we are showing our desire to find the Holy One. And when we knock, we are letting loose our longing to be in union with the God. Prayer is our way of saying that we are willing to share in that rich relationship with God.
Woman smilingDay 3.  Steps for the Journey

Read Matthew 22:30.  What conclusions can you draw about marriage in heaven?  Explain your answer, keeping in mind the very essence and most important part of the marriage relationship.

Read 2 Corinthians 2:15.  How does this verse apply to our citizenship in heaven?  How should it affect our relationships here on earth?

Read Luke 1:41 and Jeremiah 1:5.  Do you think aborted babies go to heaven?  How do these verses support your answer?

Read Revelation 20:11-14 and 2 Peter 2:4. What kind of place is hell? Describe it in your own words and be specific.

Read Romans 10:9-10.  How can we avoid hell and go to heaven?
Day 4. Truth for the journey

Read the following verses and answer each question.

Romans 3:23  For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God!

What does this verse mean to you?
How have you "fallen short?"

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Examine your heart and life.
Where do you stand with God?

Romans 8:38-39  And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can't, and life can't. The angels can't, and the demons can't. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can't keep God's love away  Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

How powerful is the love of God?
Do you believe God's love is powerful enough to save you and keep you?
Describe the kind of relationship Paul (the author of Romans 8:38-39) had with God.  How does it compare to your relationship with God?
What decision do you need to make today regarding eternity?
Oriental womanDay 5.  Power for the Journey

God's Word is our greatest source of power and strength for living. Listed below are five verses.  Memorize one verse each day.  Create a section in your journal to record those verses that impacted your life most.

1 Corinthians 13:13 These three things continue forever: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Ephesians 6:12 Our fight is not against people on earth but against the rulers and authorities and the powers of this world's darkness, against the spiritual powers of evil in the heavenly world.

2 Corinthians 1: 21-22 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us,  set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

Romans 5:8 But God shows his great love for us in this way: Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

Joy for the Journey

Pregnant Turkey Story

One year at Thanksgiving, my mom went to my sister's house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, my mom decided to play a trick. She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left, my mom took the turkey out of the oven, removed the stuffing, stuffed a Cornish hen, and inserted it  into the turkey, and re-stuffed the turkey. She then placed the bird(s) back in the oven. When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing.  When her spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little bird. With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed,"Patricia, you've cooked a pregnant bird!"  At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry. It took the family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs!
Yep!  She's blonde!
Need help?  Got a question?  Let's talk!

Q: What if someone is truly saved and murders someone or has an abortion or something horrible?  Do they still go to heaven just like a "good" person does?

A:  The bible tells us that we all have sinned and fallen short of God's standard. Works can't save us and works can't keep us. Consider the following verses:

John 10:27-28  My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

Ephesians 1:13-14  And now you also have heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.  The Spirit is God's guarantee that he will give us everything he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. This is just one more reason for us to praise our glorious God.

Ephesians 2:8-9  For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--  not by works, so that no one can boast.

Titus 3:5-7 He saved us because of his mercy. It was not because of good deeds we did to be right with him. He saved us through the washing that made us new people through the Holy Spirit.   God poured out richly upon us that Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ our Savior.   Being made right with God by his grace, we could have the hope of receiving the life that never ends.

We are all born in a state of sin. Lost people - seekers - people who have never accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior - are responsible for that state of sin which is, in reality a rejection of Jesus Christ Himself.  Christians - people who have repented of their state of sin and given their life to Jesus Christ - are responsible for the individual sins they commit every day.  Believe me, many Christians have committed "horrible" sins like abortion and murder.  Sins definitely effect the relationship we have with God but those sins do not terminate the relationship.  We have two children, a son and daughter.  If one of them hurt me, it might affect our relationship for a time, but it will never change the fact that they are my children.  The same is true of our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
