ARTIST SPOTLIGHT!
|
"Sick"
This week's artist in the spotlight is Sick of Still Real Records!
The twenty six year old Kansas born, Minneapolis resident, is out to prove to the world who "Sick" really is and why his name literally means what it reads. Not only is he sick with the flow, he also produces, writes, and graphically designs all of his own work. For someone who lived a very hard life growing up, including being in and out of prison, one would think Sick would be on a whole different path. Instead Sick took that experience and used it as an example of the way he no longer wants to be. Sick is currently enrolled in the Visual Communications at Brown College working towards an AA Degree. On top of that, Sick is working around the clock on his musical talents preparing for major shows in other cities, as well as local shows and open mic nights right here in the Twin Cities. LOCAL TWINS EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH FASHION & DANCE! |
Written by: Europe Guy [MaXX Intern/Contributing Writer]
September 10, 2008
Corianna "COCO" & Brianna "BREEZY" Dotson are 18 year old identical twin sisters with a unique style that to an on-looker can be described as 80's, urban, high fashion, or vintage. When asked to describe their distinctive style, they answer confident yet sweet, "It's the Coco & Breezy Style. We live life like it's a runway... the sidewalk can be our catwalk." Not afraid
to be different, Coco & Breezy love everything about fashion. If they buy
something that looks like what someone else would wear, they take
out their sewing machine and re-design it to create their very funky signature look.
As a result of their trendsetting ways, Coco and Breezy have been featured in
different fashion blogs in Minnesota and New York. They've also gained publicity in Minnesota publications such as the "Metro" and "Twin Cities Luxury & Fashion."
For these two, the talent doesn't stop there. Since the age of fourteen Coco & Breezy have danced in local talent shows,
opened up for major artists' concerts, and have been featured on the national television show "MTV Jams". They've also modeled in major fashion events such as the Envision 2008 Fashion Show,
Voltage Amplified, Eluded Love and more.
According to Coco & Breezy they are just getting started and have created a movement to put an end to the misconception that "Minnesota doesn't have talent." Be on the lookout for Coco & Breezy on a catwalk, street, or media outlet near you!
To contact Coco & Breezy, email: Cocoandbreezy@tmail.com or visit their official myspace at www.myspace.com/oodemtwinz.

OPEN DISCUSSION: FLORIDA JUDGE CALLS "BAGGY PANTS" LAW UNCONSTITUTIONAL
|
September 18, 2008 | Posted By Bianca aka The New Tom
Written by Cyrus LanghorneSource: SOHH.comSeptember 18, 2008 A Florida judge has lifted "saggy pants"
legislation today, one week after a teenager was forced to spend the
night behind bars for exposing his underwear in public.
According to the AFP, Palm Beach Circuit Judge Paul Moyle was shocked to find out a 17 year-old boy was jailed because of his fashion sense.
"Somebody help me," Moyle said prior to his decision. "We're not
talking about exposure of buttocks. No! We're talking about someone who
has on pants whose underwear are apparently visible to a police officer
who then makes an arrest and the basis is he's then held overnight, no
bond."
While some have argued the arrests have been justified by a showing of close to 5,000 signatures for the bill last March, the underlying issue of targeting urban communities has also risen prior to Moyle's ruling of the law as "unconstitutional." CLICK HERE to read the full story as posted on SOHH.com.

RESTORE YOUR VOICE: WHEN VOTING RIGHTS ARE RESTORED FOR EX-FELONS
|
Written by: Jennifer White [Contributing Writer]
September 18, 2008
One of the lasting effects of a felony criminal conviction
is that those individuals are disenfranchised and lose their right to
vote. However, in the State of Minnesota, that right is
not taken away forever. As one of the
most important elections in the history of the United States fast approaches, it's
important that people are informed about their rights.
The Minneapolis City Council recently adopted a resolution
co-authored by Councilmember Elizabeth Glidden, supporting the "Restore Your
Voice" Initiative. This initiative is
working with community partners to increase public education about when civil
rights are restored to individuals who have felony convictions.
Quick Facts from the City of Minneapolis Resolution supporting the
"Restore Your Voice" Initiative:
-
People
of color are arrested, convicted, and incarcerated in numbers
disproportionate to their representation in the population, which disproportionately
impacts their families and communities
- Minnesota is one of
the leading states in the nation in terms of incarceration rates, arrest
rates, and poverty rates that are disproportionately high for African
Americans and other persons of color
- Over 35%
of the incarcerated in Minnesota
are African American while that group represents only 3% of the total
state population, and over 7% incarcerated are Native American while that
group represents only 1% of the total population of the state
In the State of Minnesota ,
your right to vote is restored once you have completed the full sentence
(including parole and probation). This
is commonly called "off paper." If you have completed your full sentence, you
can vote in Minnesota ,
even if your felony conviction was in another state. It is very important that you have completed
all sentencing obligations before you register to vote (even if your
sentence will be completed by Election Day) because it is a felony to register
to vote if your rights have not been restored. In the State of Minnesota , you can register to vote on
Election Day if you have not pre-registered.
Pre-registration is recommended, which will allow any issues or problems
to be worked out prior to Election Day.
The last day to pre-register to vote is Tuesday, October 14th.
For more information on this important initiative,
please visit the City of Minneapolis
elections website at: www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/elections/restore-your-voice.asp
or the Office of the Secretary of State website: www.sos.state.mn.us. |

BOLDER OPTIONS IS LOOKING FOR MENTORS!
|

Bolder Options is a Minneapolis-based early intervention youth
mentoring program that stands out from the crowd in three distinct
ways: - Focus. We focus our efforts on a specific
group: at-risk youth 10-14 years old who reside in Saint Paul, Minneapolis,
Golden Valley, Robbinsdale, St Louis Park, and Richfield.
-
Fun. We center our mentor-youth interaction
on fun, challenging athletic activities-specifically
running and biking.
- Fulfillment. We keep our program small and highly
directed, so mentors and financial supporters can easily see the positive
impacts they make.
To receive a volunteer application and program materials,
please call the Volunteer Director at (612) 379-BOLD
Ext. 221. Leave your first and last name and complete mailing
address. You can also request information via e-mail by writing to volunteer@bolderoptions.org.
