ENTERTAINMENT NEWS: IN MEMORIAM: THE LOSS OF TWO SOUL MEN |
August 13, 2008 | Posted By Lady E
The Loss of Two Soul Men
Words: Erica Renee' Williams
August 12th, 2008
One had everyone laughing at his raw yet not too offensive jokes, while
the other had us all screaming Shaft! One was deemed as one of the
original bad boys of comedy while the other's name is synonymous with
soul music. They're set to star in an upcoming film together this
fall, Soul Men. Unfortunately, their upcoming film is not the only
thing they had in common. This past weekend the entertainment industry
took a major loss, losing both actor-comedian Bernie Mac and soul
singer Isaac Hayes, both within a weekend's time.
We were relieved to hear that Bernie Mac was alive after Internet
rumors claimed his death the week before he actually died. However, a
week later our relief turned to disbelief when we heard that he had in
fact died from pneumonia in a Chicago-area hospital on this past
Saturday. Less than a day later we learned that Isaac Hayes had been
found unresponsive in his home and later that day pronounced dead at a
Memphis Hospital.
A couple of days after, the entertainment industry and the black
community are still mourning the loss of two men who were legends in
their own right. Since making his debut in 1992 in the film, Mo Money,
Bernie Mac's career has seen tremendous growth; and many of us have
been there to watch it grow. From his stand-up on The Original Bad Boys
of Comedy (we all remember "milk and cookies"), to his comedic presence
in films like Guess Who, Bad Santa, Mr. 3000, and even his five year
tenure on none other than the Bernie Mac Show, we were there to laugh
and celebrate his success.
Isaac Hayes entertained us a little different using music as his tool.
Known most for the theme song on the 70's classic film, Shaft, he had a
passion for soul music; and whether or not you were a fan of the music,
the passion in his voice at least made you listen. He signified soul
and played a pivotal part in the blaxploitation film era.
Making such powerful marks in each of their crafts; is it unfair or
even selfish of us to say "we want more?" We want to laugh some more at
Bernie Mac. We want to groove some more to Isaac Hayes. Fortunately and
ironically we will have the chance to see them together in the film,
Soul Men, along with Samuel L. Jackson, set for a November 14th release
date. But that will be their final "new" project and then we are left
with television re-runs, 8 tracks, and old movies. Yet and still, we
will hold on to each of those things to preserve the memory of two Soul
Men. |

BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER BARBERSHOP CHALLENGE EXTENDED TO AUG. 27TH!
|
BBBS is excited to announce the 2008 "Barbershop Challenge"
campaign. This campaign aims to identify and engage 60 new African
American male mentors between June 30 and August 27, 2008.
Of the nearly 800 young people waiting for a mentor, 27 percent are
African American boys. Finding African American men to serve as Big
Brothers will have ripple effects far into the future. During the challenge, barbershops from around the Twin Cities will
be competing to recruit the highest number of new Big Brothers. The
following shops will participate in the Challenge: Changez, Chiseler,
Damien's, Dimensions, Final Cut Sports Barbershop, Grooming House,
House of Fades, J-Klips, Johnson's Barber and Beauty Shop, Mass Appeal,
Mr. Afro's, Par 4, TNT, Wilson's Image Barbershop and Wright Brothers. Each week during the challenge, KMOJ-Radio DJs will talk on-air with
the barbershop owners to find out how many Big Brothers each shop
recruited that week and what they're doing to help educate their
customers about youth mentoring. For more information on the Barbershop Challenge, or how to become a Big Brother or Big Sister, visit www.bigstwincities.org. -Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities www.bbbs.org
