Do YOU know Mark Webster Jr.?
dsides2
December 1st, 2007

Who is
Mark Webster Jr.?
This was the question in the back of my mind after hearing so much about events such as "The 80's Baby Party" & "Black Friday".
Who is this guy and why don't I know him? Well, being that I am in the same industry and an upcoming entrepreneur/promoter, I had to meet him.  I mean, this business is about who you know right? So why not take this opportunity to get to know someone I could possibly network with in the near future?

Here is my exclusive interview with the "Star" himself and see why he is most definitely The Man to know...

Mrs. MaXX: I'm just gonna start with a few basic questions...
Mark Webster: Cool.
MM: How old are you?
MW: 25
MM: Born and raised in MN?
MW: Yeah... but I've lived in Washington DC for parts of my life (where my mother is from).  I did my 1st year of college there at Howard University... DC is like my 2nd home, but South Minneapolis has been my stomping grounds.
MM: So... what is it that you do?
MW: Well... I wear a lot of different hats... but first, I am an Entrepreneur... second, I am Co-Owner along with my brother Daniel Webster and my father Mark Webster Sr. of
"The Urban Connection"
which was the 1st Black Owned Urban Media Kiosk at The Mall of America.  The kiosk is closed now, but we will be opening a new store in January in South Minneapolis.
MM: ok!
MW: I also manage a Producer named Rockcity (been managing him for like 4 years).... and then I am promoter/event organizer...
do different street team stuff (used to have the Def Jam account from 03 - 06)
MM: WOW! So it's big business for you huh?! Ok! What made you get into the Entertainment Industry? Was this something you've always wanted to do?
MW: What really got me going back in 2001 is when I met Russell Simmons in Washington DC, and I asked him for an internship at Def Jam.  He told me "NO! Hit the streets [street team/promotions] and learn from there 1st...." So that's when I really got serious and started grinding in the entertainment business. But like I said, I am entreprenuer 1st, been that way since I was little (lemonade stands and selling candy).  I am more business oriented than anything but my mission is to help elevate the entertainment scene/industry here in the Twin Cities!
MM: I hear that! Now, not to stir up any controversy but... How do you feel about the way the promoter game has just become overwhelming? Everyone is a promoter now. Everyone has an entertainment company.  Do you feel like nightlife here in the Twin Cities is becoming more of a money game than providing quality entertainment to partygoers?
MW: What you're speaking to is basically what inspired Black Friday...
Don't get me wrong, I think its great there are lots of promoters and entertainment companies.... we need that, we need more... but I think they [new promoters and ent. companies] definitely need to be serious about what they are doing, have INTEGRITY.... not just be in it to make a quick buck or blow up overnight...but to be in it for the loooong term, and in it for the people.  I  am definitely a firm believer in quality over quantity in any business, product or service... otherwise it wont last.  I think what we got is a handful of fakes, or people trying to come up too quick (hit a lick...lol).... but its all a learning experience. I hope things improve (from the consumers/peoples stand point). If all of us would just network better, communicate better,  I think our overall "nightlife" will improve....
MM: Definitely. There's definitely room for us all to succeed...
So now that we got that out of the way, tell me more about "Black Friday"...
MW: I wanted to throw a party [Black Friday] for people to come out and just kick it.  Have fun with familiar faces, and new ones... listen to good music, national and local... drink, and just have a good time.  I actually did this one free of charge... and had an open bar (while it lasted....lol) with champagne being the drink of choice for the evening...
MM: Wait a minute, FREE?
MW: BUT... by INVITE ONLY....(that was the catch). You had to be on the list or have one of the limited black cards I handed out to gain entry...
MM: Gotcha. So how did you come up with the guestlist?
MW: I just know a lot of people... lots of different people from being out on the scene.  About 90% of my myspace friends (643 to be exact) are people I really know or have done business with. All my contacts from being on the grind.... its crazy how much my phone can ring on a given day, especially party days...
MM: So how would someone get on the list for the next "Black Friday"? Me included...because *cough* I wasn't invited *cough* lol
MW: I gotcha next time for sure :0)
MM: So I'm definitely "IN" next time?
MW: Definitiely.
MM: That's word from the WebStar himself. MAXX is IN! lol
So any advice to a new up and coming entreprenuer/promoter/industry mogul?
MW: Find your niche!!! Do what it takes to make you and your product/service different!! Be creative! Take a risk! And most importantly, do a GREAT JOB at what you do, and the people and money will follow. It takes time and it will not happen overnight!! BUT, if you hang in there (endure) it's worth the wait.....
MM: There you have it. Great advice. Well Mr. Star... it has been a pleasure...anything coming up you wanna plug quick?
MW: My Producer Rockcity (nominated for his 2nd producer of the year award), my dude Fic (nominated for MPLS Mayor) has an album (Forever In Control) dropping hosted by Don Cannon. Be on the lookout out for Urban Connection, the Surprise Parties presented by The Society, and finally to all the people who are working hard to come up!!! Lets go!!!
MM: lol That's what's up. Wait! Any idea on when the next "Black Friday" will be? Or is that only for us IN's to find out?
MW: Well.. Black Friday happens once a year.... the day after Thanksgiving... the biggest shopping day of the year... when businesses are supposed to come out the "red" (debt) into the "black" (profits)..... so more than likely Imma do another joint then.
MM: Duh Mrs. MaXX...lol ok. Anything coming up soon?
MW: My next event is Dec 22nd.... its a suprise party.  You wont know where it is until 48 hours before the party.  Its gonna be super fly.... full of surprises!! And I'm just getting started.... they [events] are gonna get BIGGER and BETTER!! Like I said, you gotta be in it for the loooong run, I'm not going anywhere....

There you have it everybody. Mark Webster Jr., the intelligent, young entreprenuer destined for greatness and who I believe will be an inspiration to many. Take note.
