A coat of varnish keeps the cavity bugs away! Fluoride Varnish Update
Just as a coat of varnish protects your wood floor from water damage, fluoride varnish can protect your teeth from acid and bacteria that can cause cavities. Beginning decay starts at the outer enamel layer and works its way to the internal tooth structure. Fluoride helps to remineralize and strengthen your teeth from the outside in by applying it topically. Lesser amounts of fluoride can be found in regular toothpaste(1000 ppm) and prescription toothpaste such as Fluoridex(5000 ppm), however the fluoride varnish contains 22,600 ppm! Because it binds to the tooth structure, it is more effective...furthermore, it is not swallowed or injested, making it very safe.
The application of fluoride varnish is done at the end of the dental hygiene appointment. The varnish is "painted" onto the teeth, adheres to the tooth structure, and will leave a temporary sticky coating on the teeth. It is advised not to brush your teeth, or drink or eat anything very hot, for 6 hours after its application, as these things may interfere with the binding of the fluoride varnish to the teeth. Fluoride varnish is recommended on patients who are decay prone, have several crowns, fillings and restorations, a dry mouth, and routinely for children under 16 years old. These indications follow the American Dental Association guidelines and is considered the best care for the developing teeth in children. Insurance may not cover this $28 procedure on adults, however it can be reimbursed from a flex-spending/HSA account... and ultimately it is well worth it. We look at this product as a wonderful way to prevent future cavities and protect the investment you have made in your dental care!
