Use your passion for a purpose. Join a Charity Ride today!

Dear Cycling Friends,

Spring has sprung! And with the coming of the new cycling season, we've been inundated with requests to help promote local charity rides. Through entry fees and fund-raising, these events benefit cancer research, children's hospitals, humane societies, and more. Unlike a race, for which solid fitness and pack-riding skills are a must, bike rides for a cause are pleasantly noncompetitive. For many, signing up is great motivation simply to enjoy time on the bike, both during the event and on conditioning rides leading up to it.  We encourage you to take a look at the long list of events we've assembled and pick one or two. Grab your kids, grab your best friend, and ride in honor of someone or something you believe in!

We'd like to offer a special thanks to the more than 150 customers that sacrificed such a beautiful, rare March evening to attend our 3rd annual Performance Night. We ate, drank, talked, laughed and learned about the fastest products available! Congratulations to Madge Brower, winner of the new set of Zipp Firecrest 808s! Special thanks to our amazing Syracuse Bicycle team for working so hard to pull it together. Lastly, thanks to the representatives from Zipp, SRAM, Thule, Cervelo, Trek, Scott, Garneau, Saris, PowerTap, Castelli, Back to Wellness and CEP for helpings us make this event great!

Introduction to Training and Racing with Power, Thursday, 4/18, 7-8pm
In only a few short years, power meters have become an essential training tool for amateur and pro cyclists and triathletes. Coach Doug Bush takes the mystery out of training with power. In this 60 minute introduction to power we will cover basic power terms and metrics, types of power meters, and analysis of power files using WKO+ software. If you train with power, or you are thinking about buying a power meter, this class is a great way to get familiar with power training.  RSVP by 4/17 to Trish

VO2 Max/Lactate Threshold Testing, Friday, 4/19, by appointment

Are you training with all the facts?

Take the guesswork out of your training by accurately determining your correct training intensity.  When using a heart rate monitor or a power meter it is crucial to establish training zones based around your functional threshold rather than using maximum heart rate equations or filed tests. Sports Science research has shown that using threshold to establish training zones is the most precise way to establish training zones.

Until recently performance testing was only available for elite athletes or through University performance labs.   It is now available for all athletes!

Benefits of Testing

  • Establish exact training zones for maximum performance and weight loss.
    • o   Detailed heart rate and power based zones.
  • Determine endurance sports genetic potential based on VO2 Max.
  • Identify possible weaknesses in metabolic energy systems.
  • Determine fitness level.

How are VO2 Max and threshold tests performed?

The test is performed on a treadmill and/or the athlete's bicycle attached to a computer controlled ergometer.  Actual testing usually lasts around 10 - 15 minutes depending on the individual. The athlete wears a mask with sensors attached to a metabolic analyzer so that respiratory gases can be measured (Oxygen uptake, Carbon Dioxide production, and total volume). For triathletes it is valuable to be tested both on the bike and treadmill as training zones can vastly different between sports.

What is included with the Testing?

  • Consultation to explain the testing result and how to best implement data in training.
  • Detailed heart rate zone.
  • Wattage zones for cyclists.
  • Metabolic profile during exercise.
    • o   Fat vs Carbohydrate use.
    • VO2 Max data.

Benefits of VO2 Testing vs Field Tests for Power Meters

  • More accurate determination of wattage training zones than field tests.
  • Much less physically demanding than field tests.
  • Less influenced by hydration status and environment factors than field tests.

For more information about the testing please see www.endurancefactor.com and click the testing link.   There is a more detailed explanation of the benefits of testing as well as a sample report.

Doug Bush holds a Bachelor Degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Sports Nutrition from the University of Buffalo and is a USA Triathlon and USA Cycling certified coach. He has over 15 years experience coaching athletes of all levels. For more information, visit www.endurancefactor.com.
