Dear Cycling Friends,

Earlier this week, Congressman John Mica (R-FL) announced the introduction of the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. The proposed bill not only eliminates dedicated funding for bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure programs, but essentially eliminates the status and standing of cycling in the planning and design of our transportation system -- a massive step backwards for individuals, communities and our nation. It's a step back to a 1950s highway- and auto-only program that makes no sense in the 21st century.
The bill reverses 20 years of progress by:
- destroying Transportation Enhancements by making it optional;
- repealing the Safe Routes to School program, reversing years of progress in creating safe ways for kids to walk and ride bicycles to school;
- allowing states to build bridges without safe access for pedestrians and bicycles;
- eliminating bicycle and pedestrian coordinators in state DOTs; and
- eliminating language that insures that rumble strips "do not adversely affect the safety or mobility of bicyclists, pedestrians or the disabled."
Today, the House Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Committee will mark-up the bill and Representatives Petri (R-WI) and Johnson (R-IL) will sponsor an amendment that restores dedicated funding for Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School. Representatives Petri and Johnson can only be successful if everyone with a stake in safe sidewalks, crosswalks, and bikeways contacts their representative today. To that end, we encourage you all to let your voice be heard.
Happy Cycling,
Paul and Trish |

NYC Five Boro Bike Ride Women on Wheels Heads to the City!
Saturday, May 5th - Sunday, May 6th
For those of you not familiar with this annual event, the Five Boro Bike Tour is your chance to be a queen of New York City streets for the day! The entire 42-mile route is closed to traffic, allowing the more than 30,000 participants to enjoy a leisurely ride through all five boroughs of the city. The ride is well supported with rest areas every 10 miles on the route.
Syracuse Bicycle is again taking a group of interested cyclists to this amazing event! We'll leave Syracuse early Saturday morning, May 5th, and spend the afternoon and evening enjoying everything that New York City has to offer. Then on Sunday morning, May 6th, our adventure starts in Lower Manhattan. Email Trish if you are interested. We'll plan on having a informational meeting later this month for any women who want to join us on this big adventure!
IMPORTANT: Last year general tour registration sold out within 24-hours, leaving many eager cyclists without the opportunity to ride. This year there is a lottery registration system to ensure that bicyclists who want to participate will have a more fair and equitable chance. You can enter the lottery at any point between January 17 at 10:00 AM and February 7 at 5:00 PM. There is a nonrefundable $6 lottery registration fee for each person entering the lottery. Once the lottery registration period closes Tour Officials will send out e-mail notifications to inform you of your status. If you do not gain entry to the tour via the lottery system, you can still ride with one of our charity partners or as a VIP.
