| Blue Seventy Wetsuit Rental! |

Syracuse Bicycle carries triathlon wetsuits from both Blue Seventy and 2XU! Whether you are looking to rent or buy, each member of our sales staff is specially trained in wetsuit fitting so they can help you choose the best suit for you. Here a few answers to the most common questions we hear from interested triathletes:
Will a triathlon wetsuit make me faster?
Yes, definitely! A triathlon wetsuit is specifically designed to provide sufficient floation around your hips so your body is "floated" into an optimal swimming position and drag is reduced. Wetsuit material also is much slicker than your skin, which also reduces drag.
How do I know if it fits?
All of our sales staff are specially trained in helping you find just the right wetsuit for you. We first go by the manufacturers' height and weight guidelines, then assist you in putting on the suit correctly. Lastly, we'll check the fit at the shoulders, waist, hips and leg area to be sure you have found your perfect suit!
Is one brand better than another?
The top end of one brand of wetsuit is more alike than different from another brand's top end suit. At each price level, the suits are relatively equal to its competitor. Most wetsuit manufacturers use the same type of neoprene across a particular price level. The higher the price, the more flexible and slick the fabric.
So if the brands are essentially the same, how am I supposed to choose?
Different brands feature slightly different fit and designs, and they can feel different. What feels and fits perfectly on you, may not feel great on your best friend. Your best bet is to try on a few different suits and find the one the fits you properly and feels the most comfortable on you!
I'm still not sure I'm ready to invest in a triathlon wetsuit. Do I have other options?
Yes, you do! Syracuse Bicycle is the only dealer in Central New York to offer rental wetsuits. Be sure to make your rental reservation well ahead of time to be sure you're not disappointed. Suits rent for $40 per week, and if you decide you want to buy the suit after you've given it a test run, your rental fee is applied to the purchase price. |

Dear Cycling Friends,
The League of American Bicyclists recently announced their annual ranking of bicycle-friendly states in conjunction with May's Bike Month. The list is based on a combination of factors that include legislation, education, bike infrastructure, and public funding. The top five were Washington, Maine, Wisconsin, Minnesota. and New Jersey. New York came in at 34th, well into the bottom half fo the list.
What struck me as interesting about the top five is that they are all "cold-weather" states! Sunnier spots such as Florida, Arizona, and California ranked 7th, 16th and 20th respectively. So what exactly are the top five doing to earn the badge of "bicycle-friendly?" "It is when there is combined and consistent work of multiple agencies, legislators and advocate promoting bicycling at the state level that you start to see big gains," says League President Andy Clarke. "The states that have consistently ranked in the top five or ten have that going for them." The League also cites the following examples of bike-friendly improvements this past year: three-foot minimum safe passing bills signed into law in Kansas and Georgia; a Complete Streets policy implemented in Michigan and updated training on bicycling related laws and enforcement in Massachusetts. So what about closer to home? Bicycling Magazine has put together a list of of America's Top 50 Bike Friendly Cities. There are many important things a city can do to gain consideration for this list: segregated bike lanes, municipal bike racks and bike boulevards, to name a few. Their rationale is that If you have those things in your town, cyclists probably have the ear of the local government-another key factor. To make the Top 50, Bicycling Magazine states a city must also support a vibrant and diverse bike culture, and it must have smart, savvy bike shops. Let me give you the bad news now. Syracuse did not make this list. I wasn't surprised to see New York City as #8 on the list. It's always been known as a great place to ride because of its greenways and car free Central Park. And the recent efforts of their proactive, cycling-friendly transportation commissioner no doubt helped. But when I saw ROCHESTER as #50 and the only other city in NY on the list, I thought, wait a minute. What do they have that we don't have? Bicycling Magazine states "you can ride a new route almost every day in Rochester....the Rochester Bicycling Club has a 300+ ride map library." Having grown up in Rochester, I've done a fair amount of riding there and in my honest opinion, it just doesn't compare. Central New York features several scenic lakes (Skaneateles, Owasco, Otisco, Oneida, Cazenovia, DeRyuter, Tuscarora, Hatch, Bradley Brook...to name a few), lung busting climbs (US 20, Stanley Rd, Frank Long Rd. Hitchings Rd...to name a few) and hair raising descents. And the Onondaga Cycling Club may not have 300+ ride maps, but it's pretty close. So maybe the gauntlet has been thrown down. Should we only be known as the perpetual winner of the Golden Snowball Award? Or is it time for Central New York cyclists to put our city on the map as one of America's Top 50 Bike Friendly Cities? Let us know what you think here. Happy Riding,

Lactate Threshold Testing
Are you Training With All The Facts?

One of the most important parts of any structured training plan is to train at the correct intensity. Using a heart rate monitor or cycling power meter are both excellent methods to monitor intensity during workouts and races.
When using intensity monitoring devices it is crucial to establish training zones based around your lactate threshold. Sports science research has shown that using lactate threshold to establish training zones is the most precise way to set up training zones.
VO2 Max/Lactate Threshold Testing with Doug Bush, by appointment, will take place at Syracuse Bicycle on Thursday, June 2nd. To make your appointment, call 716-499-2300.
Bush, of Ellicottville, holds a bachelors degree in exercise science with a concentration in sports nutrition from the University of Buffalo. He has personally been involved in endurance sports for more than 20 years as a cyclist, runner and triathlete. He has experience coaching athletes of all ability levels and holds advanced coaching certifications from USA Triathlon and USA Cycling.
Tests will take approximately 1 hour, with participants spending about 15 minutes on a bike and 15 minutes on a treadmill. The remainder of time will be spent reviewing test results. |
