SkanRaces announces the first Rodeo for Hope bicycle event, free and open to all youth ages 7- 14. For complete information including preregistration go to www.SkanRaces.com.
Conducted in conjunction with the 5th annual Race for Hope in Borodino on Sunday, May 29th, this free, youth bicycle skills and safety event offers hands on activities. Rodeo starts with check-in at 8:30 AM after the start of the Race for Hope race. Rodeo events commence at 9 AM. Activities are designed to accommodate young cyclists at all levels of ability and skill, experienced and novice. Emphasis is fun.
Youth bring their own bicycle and helmet to learn and test their skills at a variety of fun bicycle challenges. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Bicycle experts will check bicycle and helmet safety fitting for all youth to ensure comfort and security. Rodeo events encourage lifelong enjoyment of safe and healthy bicycling. All youth will receive recognition and awards. Join the excitement of the Rodeo for Hope on May 29th at the Borodino Fire Department.
Bicyclists age 15 and older can still register for the Race for Hope at early bird reduced rate of $30 online now at www.SkanRaces.com. While younger bikers are enjoying the Rodeo for Hope, older racers course the scenic 24 mile timed bicycle race above Skaneateles Lake. Top three finishers by gender overall and in age groups will win awards.
Race for Hope began inspired by Dick Shaffer, a Borodino resident and triathlete, who passed away from cancer in 2006. His "never give up" spirit lives in encouraging wellness and finding a cure for cancer. Helping children with cancer, race proceeds will support research at the Center for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital. Additional donations are welcome. Paired together, the Race for Hope and Rodeo for Hope offer an excellent family fun morning of fitness followed by healthy refreshments to celebrate.
SkanRaces, a private non-profit (IRS 501c3) charity, promotes wellness and active lifestyles in central New York by conducting races and funding health-related programs with the proceeds. Among many activities sponsored by SkanRaces fundraising in 2010 offered the ability to donate $5000 to support programs for children suffering cancer at the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, a free swimming lesson program for any seven year old during 2011 at both the Auburn YMCA and the Skaneateles YMCA and Community Center (auburnymca.org) and several other wellness and recreational programs. Visit www.SkanRaces.com today for more information and to register now in the Rodeo for Hope free or the Race for Hope at reduced "early bird" rates. |

Dear Cycling Friends,
Sometimes out riding alone, I'll stop for a minute and text a friend. Just one word. Happy.
That's the feeling I get when I'm riding - pure, utter joy. Maybe it's connected with the freedom I felt as a kid tooling around with my brothers and sisters on my Schwinn with the daisy banana seat. Maybe it's just being outdoors and enjoying our beautiful world from a different perspective.
As a triathlete, I do my fair share of swimming and running. Sometimes a swim is exactly what I need to stretch out my tired muscles after a long day. And sometimes a hard, sweaty trail run is exactly what I need to get rid of the stress that crops up all too often in my busy life.
But nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike. And last week I had the opportunity to share my passion for cycling and triathlon with over 100 women at our Iron Girl Kickoff event at the store. For many of these women, Iron Girl will be their first attempt at a triathlon. For some, it will be the first time since childhood that they get on a bike. Most are understandably nervous about what they've signed up to do on August 7th.
That night attendees rotated around informational stations manned by our sales staff, guest USA Triathlon Coaches Stacy Wanamaker, Reem Jishi, Lisa Barnes, Ommegang Cycling Team members Phil McCarthy and Eric Korolewski, and Sugoi product sales rep Shawn Withers. Topics covered included bicycle selection and fit, cycling shoes and pedals, gear shifting, flat repair, clothing choice, mental skills training, transition area setup, and life/training balance.
No doubt we threw A LOT of information at these prospective Iron Girls. But at the end of the night, what I really wanted to tell all the women present was to simply enjoy the journey they are about to begin. Every step of the way, look for the moments when you just have to pull off to the side of the road and tell someone, anyone just one thing. Happy.
Happy Riding,

Tour de Cure Training Rides
Syracuse Bicycle is proud to announce that we are coordinating a series of "in-training" rides for the 2011 American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure in Verona Beach.
The goal of the in-training rides is two-fold: 1. to physically prepare for the Tour and 2. to build camaraderie amongst the riders. After all, regardless of who you are or your ability level, we're all doing this Tour to help support the efforts of the American Diabetes Association! The plan is for all riders of all abilities and distances to start in one central location with different start times - longer riders start earlier - and end up in the same location around the same time. For each of the four weekends leading up to the Tour, we'd like to start and end at or near a coffee shop, restaurant, etc. so that can do our rides, enjoy a little snack afterward, and get to know each other!
