| Train With Us This Summer |
Whether you are looking to finish your first event or achieve the next level of exellence in triathlon, Syracuse Bicycle and Endurance Factor Coaching will help guide you to become the best athlete you can be in 2011.
IT IS ABOUT THE BIKE. The cycling portion of any triathlon - whether it's a sprint, Olympic, or Ironman - is the longest of the three sports in terms of distance and duration. Properly preparing for the bike is a key aspect of any triathlon training program, and it's what sets our program apart.
Our experienced coaches will focus on developing your cycling skills, endurance and speed to your full potential, so you can bring it hard on the run. All participants will receive special discounts on bike fitting and service. And we'll teach you how to maintain your bike so any mechanical issues won't slow you down on race day.
All of our programs include either a Syracuse Bicycle team triathlon top or technical training shirt; group workouts twice weekly; instructional clinics on swimming, biking, and running skills, heart rate training, transitions, race day nutrition, and basic equipment needs; exclusive shopping events at Syracuse Bicycle; monthly social gatherings; and online
training log to quickly and easily track your progress.
We provide a periodized, professional training plan using heart rate training to guide your intensity. Our supportive group atmosphere will ensure you stay on track and have fun along the way! Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced training plans available

Dear Cycling Friends,
This month make a statement with your bike.
Since 1956, May has been recognized as National Bike Month. The third week in May is designated Bike to Work Week; and the third Friday of May is Bike to Work Day.
"Biking to work is an efficient and fun way to get the exercise that you need, without having to find extra time to work out," said Andy Clark, President of the American League of Bicyclists. "And this year with gasoline prices as high as they are, biking to work makes more sense than ever."
At Syracuse Bicycle, we are committed to helping people get out on their bikes! And that can mean your daily ride to work, a jaunt around the block with your kids, a century ride in support of your favorite charity, or a speedy bike leg in a local triathlon. Whatever your goal, we have a bike that will help you get there.
This past weekend I traveled with a group of women cyclists to New York City for the Five Boro Bike Tour, a 42-mile car free bike tour through the boroughs overlooking landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.
As you can see from our pictures, we enjoyed beautiful spring weather along with over 30,000 other cyclists. For some of our group, it was the first time they had completed a ride of this distance. For all of us, it was a unique and memorable way to experience New York City.
The Tour starts in lower Manhattan as riders head north through Manhattan into Central Park and continue on to Harlem and the Bronx, returning south along the East River on the FDR Drive. The tour then crosses into Queens and Brooklyn where cyclists take over the highways before making the climb up-and-down the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Staten Island, where the Tour Festival at Fort Wadsworth takes place. (Left to Right, Kate Wilson, Trish Dugan, Joy Covey, Donna Boots, Donna O'Byrne, Marty Osterhaudt, Mike Osterhaudt, Lisa Carlin, Carrie Roadarmel, Jackie Lewis Frenay, Nancy Lewis Brown) Lining Up on Church Street near Battery Park, along with 32,000 other cyclists! Getting Ready to Cross the Queensboro Bridge Riding near the Brooklyn Bridge View of the Manhattan Skyline from Brooklyn Crossing on the Verrazano Bridge...4 miles to the finish! Lisa Carlin and Carrie Roadarmel happy to be at the Finish Festival on Staten Island! For everyone who participated in this year's Tour: Thank you so much for this experience! For those Women on Wheels participants who were closed out of this year's Five Boro Bike Tour: Don't worry, we'll go back in 2012! In the meantime, don't forget to check out our ride calendar for all of our group rides. And keep your eye out for more information about National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 20th. COMING SOON - SYRACUSE BICYCLE JUNIOR/KIDS TRIATHLON PROGRAM! May also means only 7-8 weeks until the end of the school year! What are your kids doing this summer?! Watch this space for more information about the Syracuse Bicycle Junior/Kids Triathlon Program! We're in the midst of planning a FUN, educational experience that teaches kids the basics about triathlon. More importantly, our program will get your kids off the couch and outside enjoying our beautiful Central New York summer. Happy Riding, Trish Dugan Syracuse Bicycle 315-446-6816 |

The Important of Bicycle Fit
Does your bike "fit like a glove"?
According to a recent study in the Sports Medicine Journal, 85 percent of cyclists experience some form of pain in the knees, neck or shoulders, wrist and hands, buttocks or the back. How can the bicycle, an 200-year-old invention that has retained the same basic design for the last 100 years, still cause humans so much pain?
The answer lies in the fit. We recommend that all of our customers get a bike fitted to their individual needs to optimize comfort, performance and safety.
Whether you're a recreational or advanced cyclist or triathlete, if you don't fit your bike to your body you'll end up fitting your body to your bike. You can end up with discomfort and compromised performance at the least. An inefficient and uncomfortable position could result in permanent injury. Don't take this chance with a bike that doesn't fit properly!
At Syracuse Bicycle, we've completely redesigned our bike fit studio to offer a range of professional fit services.
At our disposal are various tools to record a cyclist's measurements, analyze them and recommend adjustments to optimize the bike's comfort and performance for the individual. We're one of only 250 bicycle fit studios in the US that uses Retul, a state of the art 3D Motion Capture Bicycle Fit system.
A quick bike fit will provide you with information to purchase a bike that generally works for you. However, in order to get the most performance out of the bike or to feel the most comfort, we'll conduct a performance test. By asking many questions about your riding style, taking measurements of your body and plotting other variables such as age, gender and physical condition, our professional bike fitters can make you go faster or create more power, can make you more comfortable, or make you more efficient.
We're dedicated to offering the most professional bicycle fit experience for our customers. Owner Paul Komanecky has over 10 years of experience and is the only certified Retul fitter in New York State outside of the New York City area. Store Manager Dan Button is a Trek/Mike Sylvester trained fitter and has over 2 years of experience, and Trish Dugan recently trained at the Serrotta International Cycling Institute.
We believe that no one should feel pain while cycling. Let us help you achieve a "fit like a glove" on your bicycle and help optimize your comfort, performance and safety. Call the shop at 446-6816 to inquire about which level of fit service would be most appropriate for you.

Tour de Cure Training Rides
Syracuse Bicycle is proud to announce that we are coordinating a series of "in-training" rides for the 2011 American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure in Verona Beach.
The goal of the in-training rides is two-fold: 1. to physically prepare for the Tour and 2. to build camaraderie amongst the riders. After all, regardless of who you are or your ability level, we're all doing this Tour to help support the efforts of the American Diabetes Association! The tentative plan is for all riders of all abilities and distances to start in one central location with different start times - longer riders start earlier - and end up in the same location around the same time. For each of the four weekends leading up to the Tour, we'd like to start and end at or near a coffee shop, restaurant, etc. so that can do our rides, enjoy a little snack afterward, and maybe get to know the other riders a little.

3rd Annual OCL Ride for Community LIving
The Ride for Community Living is a fun, family event that will raise funds for a local not-for-profit organization serving people with disabilities - Onondaga Community Living. The event will include two rides: a 10-mile ride for slow and easy riders that want to dust off that old bike, and get you out to stretch your legs on a new adventure without overtaxing yourself. There will also be a 43-mile ride for more serious experienced riders who want to venture out and see more of the beautiful Central NY area. What a great way to spend your Saturday and help OCL! Aside from the fun of riding, prizes will be awarded for the individual rider and the team who raises the most money. At the completion of the ride, all riders and volunteers will be our guests at a lunch catered by Toggenburg. There will be live music and free massages on a first come first serve basis. This will be a great opportunity for all riders to enjoy the camaraderie of cycling!
OCL helps people with disabilities to live the life of their choosing. People live in their own homes, have jobs working along side of other community people and several are also supported to go to college at Syracuse University along side of typical SU students.
