Tired of the Same Old Energy Bars?
Honey Stinger Waffle

Honey Stinger Waffle

Say hello to the Honey Stinger Waffle and goodbye to energy bars that taste like something pried from the cleats of your mountain bike shoes: The perfect food is here. And by perfect, we mean best tasting, most addictively tasty hunk of calories you can shove in a jersey pocket and then  into your mouth.

Adding the waffle to the Honey Stinger line was suggested by part-owner Lance Armstrong, who as a guy who rides on occasion in Europe has come across the "stroopwafels" in the Netherlands. We dare you to try to eat just one! 160 calories, 21g of carbs.  $1.39

Bonk Breaker Bar

Bonk Breakers

Bonk Breakers have quickly become a must-have favorite of many of our customers. Why? Because they are moist, delicious, and packed full of energy. Gluten and Dairy free, these 250 calorie sandwich impersonators do a fine job of filling the void on a long ride. And unlike a real PB&J, Bonk Breakers won't fall apart or get all squishy in your jersey pocket.

Bonk Breakers are available in four flavors: Peanut Butter & Jelly, Peanut Butter and Banana, Peanut Butter & Dark Chocolate Chip, and Almond Butter and Honey. Try them and see why they are so popular with endurance athletes. 250 calories, 37g carbs, 8g protein. $2.25

Dear Cycling Friends,

Tonight. Mainly clear skies. Low 19F. Winds light and variable. Tuesday. Generally sunny despite a few afternoon clouds. HIgh 48F. Wednesday. Showers. Highs in the upper 40s and lows in the mids 30s. Thursday. Mix of sun and clouds. High in the low 50s and lows in the mid 40s. Friday. Showers possible. Highs in the mid 50s and lows in the upper 30s. Saturday. A few snow showers. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 30s.

Looks like spring has finally arrived here in Central New York! That is, at least until rain arrives midweek and the weekend brings a few snow showers and only highs in the low 40s.  Two steps forward, one step back.

If you're like me, you're wondering how much more time you can realistically spend on an indoor trainer without losing your mind.

If you're like Paul, or maybe Phil McCarthy who I spotted out riding at 6:00 a.m. on a 10 degree morning, then 40 degrees is downright balmy. Time to break out the short sleeve jerseys!

All kidding aside, the key to an enjoyable spring riding season is choosing the right cycling clothing. On a cold, damp 30 degree day, start with a wicking base layer fitted closely to your skin to maximize insulation and moisture transmission.  My favorite baselayer is SmartWool.  Made from 100% no-itch merino wool, it's a natural fiber that manages moisture, regulates body temperature and even stays odor free.

Cycling tights from Louis Garneau, Sugoi, and Pearl Izumi are a great choice for your main insulation layer on the bottom. It's important to protect your knees and hard working gluteal and hamstring muscles from the cold to maintain flexibility and prevent injuries.

For your top, a heavy insulation layer is necessary anytime the temperature is below 40 degrees. This layer works with your base layer to keep you dry and wick away sweat. On really chilly days and early morning rides, add a shell layer such as Patagonia's Houdini Jacket. Soft, breathable and ultralight, the Houdini is a take-it-anywhere jacket, with weather-resistant protection for every high-output endeavor. And as the day warms up, this jacket stuffs easily into its own chest pocket.

Add full finger cycling gloves and neoprene booties over your cycling shoes and you are ready to take on temps below 20 degrees! And don't forget that you lose 33% of your body heat through your head, so add a helmet liner to close off helmet vents and warm your ears.

Another secret to dressing for early spring rides is a flexible wardrobe that can temperature adjust on the fly as the day gets warmer. Starting out at 8:00 AM it may be 35 degrees but by 1 PM your return trip may be in the lower 60's. Arm warmers and leg warmers are perfect for just this situation, as they are easily pulled off and stowed away in a jersey pocket as the day warms.

So remember, a few key pieces of the right cycling clothing can make all the difference in when it comes to comfort in the saddle through a wide range of temperatures.  Don't spend one more minute on that indoor trainer - get outside now!

Happy riding,

Good Time Had By All!

Cycling and Triathlon Perfomance Night

 Performance Night

Thanks to everyone who came out last Thursday night for our Cycling and Triathlon Performance Night. We had a fantastic turnout with just under 100 people signing in! A great presentation by Jon Kameen from Cervelo along with product showings by the Zipp, SRAM & PowerTap reps. Left a lot of people with a lot of desires...Beer, food and bikes...at the very least, it's always fun. See you all next time! We took lots of great pictures!  See them all on our Facebook page.

Keep your eye out for our Introduction to Training With Power clinic coming in April. Jon Lewis of Saris (PowerTap power meters) will be back, along with Doug Bush of Endurance Factor coaching to explain the theories behind training with a power meter and how it can help you achieve your best season ever!

Bike Spotlight: Cervelo RS
You can own your own carbon fiber Cervelo for under $3000!

Good enough for the pros as proven by Cervelo TestTeam who raced it at Paris-Roubaix and the Vuelta a Espana, but don't let that fool you. The Cervelo RS is designed to give non-racers a bike that suits their style of riding, without the sacrifice in performance experience.

The RS is part of the R-series, designed to make the difference on the hills and mountains.  With the RS, you'll experience low weight to help your climbing, torsional stiffness for safety and confidence while descending, and vertical compliance and vibration damping for comfort on long rides & bad roads.

This frame will make you more comfortable on your toughest weekend rides, and if needed, carry you to the podium of your local race. Thanks to its taller headtubes, the RS allows you to position your handlebars higher without needing too many spacers.

The Cervelo RS equipped with SRAM Rival retails for $2600!
