 Dear Cycling Friends,

"In the spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love..."

...or getting outside on his bike!
HeartCookie

This Valentine's Day, we thought we'd take a few liberties  with Alfred Lord Tennyson's dramatic monologue about unrequited love.

The best thing about lavishing love and attention on your ride is the guaranteed return on that investment! So whether you're lucky in love this Valentine's Day or not, treat your bike to our Winter Overhaul Special and your bike will give you miles of enjoyment in return this coming cycling season.

From now through the end of February, the friendly folks in our service department are offering our most complete service package for just $149!

So, what does a full bike overhaul entail? First, we will disassemble, clean, inspect and replace parts as needed within your bike's critical systems. Second, we service the hubs, bottom bracket, headset, derailleur, chain, cassette, brakes, cables & housing, grips and bar tape. We also true your wheels and carefully lube and tune all systems to ensure smooth operation and increase your bike's longevity. So get in here and let us love your ride!

And while we're in the mood for love, we'd like to send a special message down Erie Blvd to our friends at  Fleet Feet Sports! A heartfelt congratulations to Fleet Feet employee Fred Joslyn for winning the Rock 'n' Roll Mardi Gras Marathon this past weekend and qualifying for 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials next January. We love to hear success stories, so feel free to share yours on our Facebook Page!

And gotta mention that I love, love, love all of our new Patagonia jackets, but also LOVE that our Winter Cycling gear is now 25% off!!!  Hurry in for best selection!

Happy Riding,

The Mayor of Syracuse Bicycle

Eric Hinman Checks in on Foursquare

Foursquare

Syracuse Bicycle customer Eric Hinman gets the "royal treatment" when he walks through our door...he's our Mayor after all! And he didn't get elected to that position, rather he earned it by "checking in" via his iPhone app every time he visits our store.

Foursquare is a location-based mobile platform that makes cities easier to use and more interesting to explore. By "checking in" , users share their location with friends while collecting points and virtual badges. Businesses sometimes offer incentives to bring customers back for repeat "check ins." Our "prize" last month was a free energy gel on first check in, and then every 3rd check in.  Currently, we're offering our new Syracuse Bicycle oval stickers on first check in.

Eric Hinman

We were curious to find out more about our Mayor, so we posed the following questions to Eric.

So tell us about yourself!

I was born in Watertown, NY in 1980.  I grew up in Pulaski, NY - snow country!  I attended college at SUNY Geneseo.  Upon graduation, I started my career in the insurance industry selling property & casualty insurance.  In 2005 I started my own insurance brokerage, Hinman & Associates.  In 2009, I co-founded a software company, AppFury, that specializes in developing mobile applications.

How and when did you get into cycling?

I started cycling in the Spring of 2010.  I purchased a mountain bike and made weekly treks to Highland Forest.  I soon realized most of my friends had road bikes, so I sold my mountain bike and purchased a road bike.  I linked up with a great group of people and started going on longer rides all over Central NY.  The first bike race I competed in was The Great Race.  I noticed many people riding tri-bikes.  They all seemed to be faster than me!  This led me to my current bike, a Cervelo P2!

What got you started in triathlon?

I joined the CNY Triathlon Club last July.  I did a few practice triathlons at Jamesville Beach and Oneida Shores and almost instantly became addicted.  My first competitive triathlon was the Cazenovia Triathlon.  It was only my third time swimming in open water.  I somehow side stroked/backstroked my way through it.  After that race, I started swimming every day at Gold's Gym to help improve my swimming.  I also competed in the Skinnyman and DeRuyter Triathlons last year.

What bike(s) do you currently own and why did you choose them?

As I mentioned, I currently ride a Cervelo P2.  But I've been eyeing that Cervelo P3 in the showroom...Didn't we agree the mayor of Syracuse Bike gets 50% off?!

Do you have a favorite piece of cycling gear that you can't live without?

I can't live without my bike computer.  I'm obsessed with analytics - I love seeing speed, average speed, distance, etc.  It gives me a goal each time to ride longer and faster!

How often do you ride?

I ride 2-3 days a week.  Once the snow melts, I will ride 3-4 days a week. Even though I attend a great indoor cycling class at Syracuse Bicycle with an amazing instructor, there is nothing like riding outside!

What is your favorite route?

I really enjoy the Syracuse 70.3 bike course.  I'm looking forward to riding the Lake Placid Ironman course this summer in preparation for 2012.

Why do you ride? What is enjoyable about it for you?

I love the competition and all the wonderful people I have met!  It's a thrill being in the water at the start of a race with hundreds of other people not knowing how you are going to do, or where you will finish.  It's fun to compete with others and also against yourself trying to better your time.  The triathlon community is a tight knit group of like-minded people and I have developed many friendships in the short amount of time that I have been racing.

Of all three sports (swim, bike, run) which one do you enjoy the most and which one do you enjoy the least and why?

I enjoy biking the most in a race setting.  It's exhilarating to speed down a hill with others and go into a sharp turn.  Swimming is my least favorite, mainly because I'm still learning proper form/breathing.  I have a difficult time staying on course and seem to swim in a zig zag!  Running is the most painful, especially after giving it your all on the swim/run.

What are your race plans for the coming season?

I will be racing my first 70.3 triathlon in June - Eagleman -  in Cambridge, MD.  I am also doing the Syracuse 70.3 this year.  Leading up to that, I'm planning on racing the Cazenovia Tri, Mini Mussleman in Geneva, and the Skinny Man.
