Dear Cycling Friends,
Almost two weekends ago, we were lucky enough to be a part of an amazing demonstration of community support for all women and those close to them who have suffered from breast cancer. TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY TWO cyclists from the local area-- and even from as far away as Rome and Oswego--participated in the Syracuse Bicycle 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Ride. This incredible turnout made us NUMBER ONE in the United States and Canada for pre-registered riders among all participating Trek Bicycle retailers! It was a gorgeous fall day and riders enjoyed a post ride lunch of baked ziti, bread, fruit and cookies provided by Syracuse Bicycle and Angotti's Family Restaurant. At the end of the day, we raised $8,652 through the generosity of every attendee. We'd like to thank particularly the Onondaga Cycling Club and the CNY Triathlon Club for encouraging their club members to support this event by donating an additional $10 per rider. The inaugural Club Challenge was a close competition with CNY Triathlon edging out the Onondaga Cycling Club: 80 riders to their 70. We hope to see an even bigger turnout from both clubs next year!! We particularly enjoyed honoring our survivors - those women who joined us for the ride who have won their battle against this disease. Each woman (or family member) received a pink rose bouquet, DeFeet Pink Ribbon cycling socks, and a $50 gift certificate to Mirbeau Inn and Spas in Skaneateles, NY.
Check out all our pictures from the event at www.facebook.com/syracusebicycle and make sure you "like us" while visiting our store page!

We are looking for more instructors, so please contact trish@syracusebicycle.com if you are interested in teaching a class.

Trainers: 411 by Jaime Lawlor
It was a cold and windy morning in Chestnut Hill, MA when I first learned what it was to use a trainer. The air was bitter and biting and even the toughest of the tough on the Boston College Cycling Team yielded to Mother Nature's winter morning. But the Saturday morning simply could not be wasted. So seven spandex-clad cyclists gathered in the common room of an 8-man suite and set up their trainers for what was to be an epic day. It was, indeed, the Godfather Marathon day. Eight hours, four pizzas and seven very sore posteriors later, I swore never to use a trainer again.
But since the idea of venturing out in a snow storm at sub-ten degrees was less than enticing and spin bikes just don't provide the same benefits, our trainer parties became quite the social event. It doesn't seem fair that the Syracuse cyclists get the short end of the stick when it comes to riding weather, but how else would you keep the racing field even? So when you just can't bring yourself to put on one more wool sock and if it breaks your heart to see that bike sitting lonely, untouched in the corner your answer is simple; the CycleOps Fluid2.

Spin, Spin, Spin by Jaime Lawlor

As a rower in high school indoor spinning classes were popular forms of cross training in between erg workouts and Salt Museum runs. In college I began to have an illicit love affair with spinning, whipping through lift routines in order make the midday class. So when eventually I fell out of love with rowing and decided to retire, I turned to the cycling team to fill the holes in my schedule and workout fixes. I love spin class, I'm great at it, and I've done hundreds of them. I'll be awesome at cycling! This was my thinking as I signed up for the listserv at Student Activities day. It took one 2-hour ride for me to realize-spin class was NOTHING like riding a bike....
Spin classes shouldn't be seen as parallel to actually getting out and riding your bike but it does provide benefits you may not always receive on your typical long road rides. When added in to your fitness routine, the cardiovascular benefits of spin classes are unmatched.
