Finding Your Breath & Deepening Your Lung Capacity
Lessons from Yogi Masters

You've heard over and over since grade school that while exercising you breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. But often when you're heaving through the heat and humidity this elementary lesson often goes out the window.

What are Those Nose Hairs for Anyway?
Making a point of breathing in through your nose during training will train you to do it during races. It may seem like you are getting more air by breathing through your mouth-- but that's just what your body is absorbing; air. What you need is oxygen. Your nose has natural filters that weeds out all the excess particles and gases in the air making the breath your lungs receive a higher concentration of good ol' oxygen. It may seem uncomfortable at first but the next time you start to really lose your breath consciously make the effort to breath in entirely through your nose until your lungs feel full then exhale at a rate that feel normal-- and repeat. This also accustoms your lungs to expanding and breathing deeper-- soon you'll find it's easier to breath and you'll catch that breathe and recover quicker.

Lessons From the Yogi Masters
To improve your breathing off the bike, take a hint from a yoga technique. Pranayama breathing is the practice of deepening the breath and breath control. For the full experience, sit cross legged on a flat surface and with your left hand, tuck your pointer and middle finger into the base of your thumb (as pictured above). Close off your right nostril with your thumb. Inhale through the left nostril to full capacity over 6 seconds. Close your left nostril and hold that breath for 4 seconds. Then release your right nostril and exhale all your breath over 6 seconds. Inhale through the right nostril over 6 seconds, close off both nostrils for 4 seconds and then exhale through your left nostril. repeat this for 4-5 minutes.

Eventually this will start to feel regular and comfortable. When you're ready to increase your breath control, use the same pattern of alternate inhaling/exhaling but when you inhale- breath in for 3 seconds and hold both nostrils shut for 12 seconds and then release over 6. Inhale left for 3-- hold for 12-- exhale right for 6-- inhale right for 3-- hold 12-- exhale left for 6. Lather, rinse and repeat for 4-5 minutes and you'll be on your way to victory. Let the only wind your sucking be the tail wind at your back!

Race Results Recap

On June 26th, Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle sent racers to the Watkins Glen International Speedway for the Corning Circuit Races. Representing the team was Jeremy Kassel, Greg Drumm, Phil McCarthy, Eric Korolewski, Cory Peranich, Dave Yacobelli, Craig Nichols and Eric Gregoire. While everyone raced hard and contributed to the overall team effort, Eric Gregoire won the CAT 4 race and Craig Nichols came in a close second. Team colors again were flown on the podium for the later CAT 3/4 race with Eric Gregoire taking third place.

On July 3rd Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle was represented in Northeast PA at the Nanticoke Criterium. Eric Gregoire and Eric Korolewski made the trip to enter the CAT 4 race. Eric and Eric worked together throughout the race to again get the team colors on the podium. Eric Gregoire grabbed the win while Eric Korolewski raced strong for third place.

On July 2-5, 2010 Team Ommegang-Syracuse Bicycle rider Dan Fitch travelled to MA to race in the Master's Division of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic. The four day stage race consisted of a circuit race, or road race, a time trial, and a criterium against some of the best competition in the Northeast. Dan rode hard for all four days and came in 15th overall in a very competitive Master's field.  Good job Dan!
