Dear Cycling Friends,

JOIN OUR TEAM!!
Tourde Cure
The Tour de Cure is a series of fundraising cycling events held in 43 states nationwide to benefit the American Diabetes Association.  The Tour is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Whether participants ride 15 miles or 100 miles, they will travel a route supported from start to finish with rest stops, food to fuel the journey and fans to cheer them on!

For the third year in a row, I will be heading up a group of local cyclists - Team Syracuse Bicycle - in the Tour de Cure at Verona Beach State Park on Sunday, June 6th.  In 2008, Team Syracuse Bicycle placed 9th among several local teams for fundraising.  Last year, we moved up to 7th place. This year, we want to be in the TOP FIVE for fundraising. And we can't get there without your help. Please consider joining us on June 6th. You can choose from a 15, 25, 40, 62.5, or 100 mile ride on the beautiful roadways near and around Oneida Lake. After the ride, enjoy a great family celebration with food, music, and free massage for those tired legs!

If you can't join us, then please consider making a donation to our team here. Everyone has a different reason for riding in the Tour de Cure and raising money for the American Diabetes Association. Some people ride in memory of a family member that lost their life to diabetes. Some people ride in honor of a friend that lives each day with this daunting disease. Some people ride for themselves.

I'm riding in honor of the people I know who live with diabetes each day. Won't you join me?

Happy Riding,

Women On Wheels
Women on Wheels
Ride Recap:  Our Women on Wheels Beginner Cycling program is off to a great start!  We had 10 women attend our very first Women on Wheels ride Thursday morning on April 15th and 15 women at our evening ride last Thursday on April 22nd!  WOW rides are co-sponsored by Syracuse Bicycle, OCC, and CNY Tri Club and are designed for the beginner rider.  At both rides, we spent a few minutes completing waivers and talking about the benefits of OCC membership.  Then we talked about NY State Bicycling law and how to ride safely on our roadways.  We practiced signaling to cars and making a proper left hand turn.  The ride lasted about an hour and covered a 10-mile loop north of Green Lakes State Park.  It was a great group of women in attendance - some who had never ridden on a roadway before!  Thanks again to OCC club member Red Donzella for her support at the back of the ride.  She provided some wonderful coaching to our new riders.

Our next Women on Wheels ride will take place Thursday, April 29th, at 11:00 am! We are beginning this ride at Panera Bread at Fayetteville Towne Center.  If you'd like to join me for a pre-ride cup of coffee, I will be at Panera at 10:30 am. The lesson for this week is Basic Bicycle Maintenance - how to keep your bike clean and lubricated and how to change a flat tire.

We will ride approximately 10 miles.  It is a "no-drop" ride, which means that I will plan on staying at the back of the ride to make sure the last person makes it back safely.  Other riders are welcome to ride ahead if desired and I will provide ride maps.  Please email if plan on attending, trish@syracusebicycle.com

The next evening ride will take place on Thursday, May 6th, at 6:00pm.  We will meet at the Kohls Parking Lot at Fayetteville Towne Center.  We will be covering Basic Bicycle Maintenance again at this ride.

Spring Riding Gear

Last week as I headed out on a long
ride, the weather was a balmy 65 degrees and sunny.  I checked the weather and saw that there was some rain in the forecast for later in the afternoon. I shrugged it off, thinking I would be back home before the storm hit. Just as my luck would have it, the rain came a little earlier than planned, and I was stuck hours from home in just a short sleeve jersey and shorts. To add insult to injury, I heard the tell tale hiss of air leaving my rear tire and had to do a quick roadside repair as the temperature continued to drop. And let me tell you, it's HARD to change a flat when your fingers are cold! So learn from my experience and take along a few of the following items the next time you head out in uncertain spring weather!

How to Ride Your First Century

100 Mile CenturyThis week's Coaching
Corner brings you advice from Fred Matheny about completing your first century, or 100-mile ride. Co-founder of the popular website www.RoadBikeRider.com, Fred was the Training and Fitness Editor of Bicycling Magazine for a decade, has written many books on cycling including Fred Matheny's Complete Book of Road Bike Training; and is a world-record-holding roadie.

Whether you're interested in getting in better shape, completing an organized ride like the MS-150 events, or excited about trying your first metric or full century (62 or 100 mile rides), there's a great way to get started. It's worked for countless riders over the years. It begins with this simple declaration:

"I'm going to do the ____________________ century ride."
