Dear Cycling Friends,

Staten Island ChuckWe're siding with Staten Island Chuck's prediction for an early spring this year over Punxsutaweny Phil's depressing divination that winter is here for another six weeks. For those less familiar with Chuck, he's the official groundhog meteorologist for New York City.  From his cozy home in the Staten Island Zoo, Chuck's predictions have been correct 80% of the time since 1980, while Phil has only managed to be right 39% of the time. To that end, we've brought in an amazing selection of spring riding gear from Pearl Izumi, Louis Garneau and Sugoi.  You need to see it in person, so come on down to the store and do a little spring time dreaming.  Store manager Dan Button, our "People We Love" feature for this issue, has done an amazing job reorganizing and displaying all our new inventory.

This month we are also excited to welcome a few out of town guests, coaches Todd Scheske and Doug Bush.  Todd will be presenting a talk on Planning Your Race Season - With or Without a Power Meter.  This is a great opportunity to get answers to all your questions about how best to prepare for those upcoming cycling and triathlon races.  Doug joins us later in the month with a class on Exercise Nutrition: How Best to Fuel Your Body Before, During and After your Workout.  Information on dates, times and how to register can be found in our Store Calendar section below. Doug is also taking appointments for Lactate Threshold testing on both Thursday and Friday, 2/25 and 2/26.

Happy Riding!

Brian's Bike Tips

In this issue of "Brian's Bike Tips," Brian will tell you everything you need to know (and more!) about the various types of bike pedals available to you the rider.

A bicycle pedal is the part of a bicycle that the rider pushes with his or her foot to propel the bicycle. It provides the connection between the cyclist's foot or shoe and the crank allowing the leg to turn the bottom bracket axle. Pedals usually consist of a spindle that threads into the end of the crank and a body, on which the foot rests or is attached, that is free to rotate on bearings with respect to the spindle.

The velocipede, a predecessor to the bicycle, lacked pedals but allowed the crank to be operated by means of a treadle. Pedals were initially attached to cranks connecting directly to the driven (usually front) wheel. The safety bicycle as it is known today came into being when the pedals were attached to a crank driving a sprocket that transmitted power to the driven wheel by means of a roller chain.

Traditionally, platform pedals were pedals with a relatively large flat area for the foot to rest on, in contrast to the quill pedal which had very little surface area.
One form of the platform pedal had a large flat top area and flat bottom for use with toe clips and toe straps, and were designed for greater comfort when using shoes with less than rigid soles. They typically had a smaller cutaway underside giving greater cornering clearance, which was often needed on the track. They were often marketed as being more aerodynamic than conventional quill pedals.

Dan Button: Living A
 Balanced Lifestyle

Walking into Syracuse Bicycle today is a much different experience than six months ago, largely due to the efforts of our new store manager Dan Button.  A merchandising whirlwind and consummate customer service professional, Dan brings several years of retail experience from his previous job as store manager of Eastern Mountain Sports at Carousel Mall.  Dan joined the Syracuse Bicycle staff last August in an effort to use his design and merchandising skills more creatively while continuing to employ his already highly developed customer service skills as well as to bring more balance to his life.  An outdoor aficionado who loves to run, bike, swim, telemark ski, snowshoe, hike, and fly fish, Dan was looking for a more flexible work schedule that would allow him more time to pursue these activities.

"I had a great experience at EMS.  I learned a lot about retail and customer service.  Best of all, it's where I met my beautiful wife, Stephanie, who walked in one day looking for a new backpack," Dan says.  "I also worked with some phenomenal people who remain some of my best friends today."  It was one such friend who introduced Dan to Syracuse Bicycle co-owners, Paul Komanecky and Dan Venditti, who were looking for some part-time help.  Dan had recently started cycling again after blowing out his knee on the ski slopes and had his eye on a new bike.  It was a win-win situation for both parties.
