Dear Cycling Friends,

Are you one of the many people who make a New Year's resolution to get into shape and end up breaking it by February? Why is it that despite our good intentions, so many of us can't seem to find the time or energy to stick to a fitness plan year round? If your motivation seems to be dropping as we near the end of January, here are a few tips to help you stay on track:

#1: Make an appointment to exercise.  That's right. Find 30 minutes or even one hour on your daily calendar and schedule time with yourself to work out. Make it a priority.

#2: Get your gym things ready the night before.  It's much easier to stop hitting the snooze button if your bag is already packed with all your essentials. You can just get your clothes on and get out the door.

#3: Work out with a friend.  You are much more likely to show up for an exercise session if your friends are waiting for you! Having a supportive social network will make it easier for you to stick with your plan.

#4: Reward yourself. We're all goal oriented to a certain extent. Set simple, realistic goals to track your progress, and then set up rewards for yourself when you meet them.

#5: Keep it fun and simple. Most people loose their motivation to exercise over time because they just aren't having much fun doing it.  You are much more likely to stick with a work out plan when you are doing a sport or activity you truly enjoy.

#6: Join the Triathlon and/or Cycling Club.  Yeah...it's only January but it will get you excited and motivated to stick to your guns!  It's always fun to ride with others and easy to turn your workout into good times.  Take advantage of all the scenic rides, events, incredible organization and wonderful members that the Onondaga Cycling Club and CNY Triathlon Club have to offer. They're well run and offer plenty to cyclists and triathletes of ALL abilities.  Most importantly, relative to their membership dues they are deal too good to be refused.  What's better?  If you purchase or renew a membership to either club at Syracuse Bicycle on February 4th, we'll pick up a portion of your membership fee.  See the details below.

One of the best things about owning a bike shop is helping our customers embrace a healthy lifestyle and stay committed to their fitness goals. If you miss riding your bike or just want the camaraderie of a group workout, come to our Indoor Cycling Classes currently held Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. We are looking to offer additional classes - Whether interested in leading or attending one, let us know what times would work best for you.

Happy Riding!

Paul and Dan

Brian's Bike Tips

Can you identify this part of your bicycle?

  • They are often taken for granted.
  • They are typically black, but can be gray or even multi-colored.
  • They are crucial to the performance and reliability of your bike.

Give up? It's your TIRES! This week, Brian gives you all the information you'll ever need about your bicycle tires.  Different types, what they're made of...don't worry, he covers it all!

Clincher Tires

Conventional tires used on 99% of all bicycles are "clincher" type, also known as "wire-on." They consist of an outer tire with a u-shaped cross section, and a separate inner tube. The edges of the tire hook over the edges of the rim, and air pressure holds everything in place.
Many people suppose that tires are made out of rubber, because that's what is visible. This is a major oversimplification--rubber is the least important of the three components that make up a tire: bead, fabric and rubber...

Coaching Corner

This section of our newsletter is devoted to sharing coaching tips and advice from several professional doctors, scientists, coaches and athletes on a variety of topics.  These topics will range from what type of drink you should use while riding to the best way to recover in the off-season. With each installment of "Syracuse Bicycle's Coaching Corner," we hope that we can answer all of your questions about training, racing and everything in between.

In this weeks addition of "Syracuse Bicycle's Coaching Corner" we cover the topic of Training While Traveling.  Everyone travels at some point during the year whether it's for work, vacation, family or various other reasons.  Sometimes these trips can come at the most inopportune time for a cyclist.  In some instances it can be a needed break from training, while in other cases the individual is stuck looking for other methods to keep up their fitness.  In the following article the coaches from VeloNews.com are back with us again to cover this topic.  Professional cycling coaches, Frank Overton and Paul Swift answer questions about various training exercises that anyone can do while they are away from their bike.
