East St. Louis Middle School Receives Award Mason Clark Middle School

Mason-Clark Middle School in Illinois Earns Academic Improvement Award

More good news on the school success front - our partner, Mason-Clark Middle School, was one of only nine middle schools in the state of Illinois to earn the Academic Improvement Award for showing substantial improvement in achievement. Congratulations to Principal Lelon Seaberry and his hard working faculty and staff!

Academic Improvement Awards are given to schools that have shown at least 7.5 points improvement in state test scores in both reading and math between 2010 and 2011 and at least 15 points in state test scores in both reading and math between 2009 and 2011, thereby showing an upward trend in state test results.

Meet Not One, But TWO of JP's Most Avid School Improvement Specialists
Find Out What Makes Omar and Sandy Idolize Successful Leadership Implementation

When it comes to practicing what we preach, JP doesn't just talk the talk - we walk the walk! Look no farther than our thriving East St. Louis team, made up of Dr. Chris Jones, Doug Blancero, Sandy Leonard and Omar Tabb - they are a great example of leadership development and coaching. In this article, two vital members of the team, Sandy and Omar, share their thoughts about the success of Mason-Clark Middle School and helping schools in general.

Sandy Leonard has been with JP for over fifteen years, and her love of helping schools has not waned one iota. When asked what she loves about education, Sandy said, "When I see a teacher, principal or student at that moment something really sinks in, the way their eyes light up with the knowledge they can be successful, that is when my fire burns bright!"

Omar Tabb is just as passionate as Sandy when it comes to helping schools, especially our East St. Louis partner. "East St. Louis carries a sense of pride like no other community I've seen, and that sense of community is reflected in the schools." Most, if not all of the administrators, says Omar, grew up in the community and they come to work with a sense of purpose and vision for providing current students with the opportunity to positively impact their community for the future.

Section 504 Check-Up: Understand the Law Requirements So You Can Apply it with Greater Confidence

March 16th Webinar for Educators

Schools have been responsible for leveling the playing field for children, whatever their abilities and circumstances. But, Section 504, a broader and more flexible law than the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), presents schools with many challenges in implementation.

Join Section 504 expert Dr. James McKethan for a 2-hour webinar that will give you a clearer  understanding of your obligations and provide you with important guidance in your day-to-day implementation. He will simplify and highlight your responsibilities and provide you with tips and strategies for some of the most common issues schools face as they work to interpret and carry out the mandates of the law.

exploreSandy Leonard and Omar Tabb, School Improvement Specialists

Both Sandy and Omar credit the leadership skills of Principal Lelon Seaberry with Mason-Clark Middle School's recent Academic Improvement Award. Omar considers Principal Seaberry and his leadership team to be one of the best leadership tandems he's ever worked with. "They epitomize the idea of a shared sense of purpose and leadership." Sandy agrees with Omar and says Principal Seaberry is a principal she would want to work with if she were a teacher. "He is always open to suggestions and new possibilities," says Sandy, "and anything we share with him is in place the next time we visit his school."

Over the years, Sandy has learned the extreme importance of leadership in the classroom. "I once thought we could help teachers in the classroom regardless of what kind of principal was in place. I now know the principal is the integral cog in the wheel of school success," says Sandy. She also believed all principals knew how to be effective, but has learned over the years that principals, like all educators, need support to be successful.

Omar shares Sandy's feelings about leadership in schools and is proud to be a contributing author on many of JP's Leadership Workshops. "Our leadership workshops not only embed current research and convey contemporary leadership ideology, they also employ practical strategies and a personal passion for leaderships' influence in turning around our nation's schools." Omar believes JP's workshops are successful because they are based on empirical research and they are practical, which allows the strategies to be implemented in the school setting immediately. "JP's workshops force leaders to reflect on their own practice and to develop as a professional."
