June 25-29 or

July 9-13

Hurry, only a few spots remain for JA BizTown Summer Camp 2012!

JA BizTown Summer Camp is the place to be this summer! Our day camp gives kids aged 10-13 the chance to experience real-world opportunities and responsibilities as they help build and operate their own community.

Campers will apply and interview for jobs, hold elections, work as part of a business team, and bring out their own entrepreneurial spirit as they think up ways to innovate their products and services.

Campers do not have to have prior JA BizTown experience to be part of this week of fun and learning. Space is limited, so register early. For more information and to download a registration form visit our Summer Camp web page.

Dear Junior Achievement Supporters,
Trent Klingensmith
Junior Achievement USA just released the 2012 Teens and Personal Finance Survey, sponsored by The Allstate Foundation. According to this survey, only 56% of teens 14-18 years old think they will be as financially well-off or better than their parents, a 37% drop from 2011 (89%).

Recent reports say this will be the first generation in a century that is unlikely to end up better off financially than its parents. Even so, our young people should still have the opportunity to shape their own futures, as long as they have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to do so.

Junior Achievement is providing those opportunities for students throughout Middle Tennessee, especially at the high school level.

Through a national partnership with AT&T, the resurgence of our JA Company Program, and the JA Titan Business Challenge (see below), Junior Achievement is introducing today's teens to the workplace and giving them the resources they need to achieve financial success as adults.

In 2008, AT&T partnered with JA USA to provide job shadow opportunities to 100,000 high school students. On March 28, 2012, JA joined AT&T to celebrate reaching that milestone. Since this initiative began, 784 high schoolers from eight Middle Tennessee schools have participated in an AT&T Job Shadow event. Over 375 local AT&T employees volunteered more than 3,000 hours to give these students an understanding of the telecommunications industry and the workplace in general.

To these employees and to all the volunteers who give of their time to make JA programs a reality for our students, let me say thank you! Together we can empower today's generation to own their economic success.

Sincerely,

Trent Klingensmith
President, Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee

2012 JA Titan Business Challenge

JA Titan Winning Team
Cane Ridge High School takes first place in the 2012 JA Titan Business Challenge. Pictured L-R: Team volunteer and mentor from Caterpillar Financial Services Ritzon Fernandez, team members Omed Hussein, Raheem Parham, and Diante Vinson, and JA Director of Programs Andy Schenck.

On April 24th, 60 students from eight different high schools in three Middle Tennessee counties competed in the JA Titan Business Challenge presented by Caterpillar Financial. Twenty student-led companies, in teams of 3, sold products, developed product innovations, analyzed financial reports, implemented marketing plans and donated to charity.

Prior to the competition, students received the 7-session, JA Titan classroom-based program which introduces critical economics and management decisions through an interactive computer simulation and was taught by volunteers from Caterpillar Financial and FirstBank. Only the top team from each classroom was invited to compete in the Challenge.

Cane Ridge High School took first place in the JA Titan Business Challenge. McGavock High School placed second and Pope John Paul II High took third.

We greatly appreciate the time and generosity of Caterpillar Financial and its employees who made this experience possible for these future business leaders.

Put some adventure in your 5K!
