Summer Camp 2012

June 25-29 or

July 9-13

JA BizTown Summer Camp is the place to be this summer! Our day camp gives kids aged 10-13 the chance to experience real-world opportunities and responsibilities as they help build and operate their own community.

Campers will apply and interview for jobs, hold elections, work as part of a business team, and bring out their own entrepreneurial spirit as they think up ways to innovate their products and services.

Campers do not have to have prior JA BizTown experience to be part of this week of fun and learning. Space is limited, so register early. For more information and to download a registration form visit our Summer Camp web page.

Dear Junior Achievement Supporters,
Trent Klingensmith

From the streets of Beijing to the steps of the state capital, JA of Middle Tennessee has brought the global economy to life for local and international students. Already in 2012, JA has engaged in partnerships that have allowed us to offer unique opportunities to middle and high school students. First, we joined together with AT&T and Tennessee state legislators on Jan. 25 to offer a Legislative Job Shadow opportunity for students at Nashville's Hillwood High School.

Secondly, we hosted Chinese exchange students for the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 3, thanks to a partnership with the Tennessee China Development Center and Belmont University. These middle and high schoolers spent the week learning about the free enterprise system and participated in JA's It's My Business program, led by volunteers from Schneider Electric.

For both of these groups, Junior Achievement exposed them to opportunities they would not otherwise have experienced. It is not every day that teenagers get to see our state government at work. The group from China learned how Americans do business and created their own business plans and products to sell in town.

Because of these opportunities, students' eyes have been opened to possibilities they may not have ever considered before: government, entrepreneurship, community involvement, and leadership. On top of that, these future business leaders were able to see what can result from working hard and staying in school. These experiences will continue to impact these young people for the rest of their lives.

Thanks to everyone who made these two events possible and to all of our JA partners in Middle Tennessee. You are truly helping to make a difference in the lives of our youth everywhere.

Sincerely,

Trent Klingensmith
President, Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee

AT&T and JA Partner for Legislative Job Shadow

Hillwood High School students at Legislative Lounge for AT&T-sponsored Job Shadow.

Tennessee legislators joined with Junior Achievement and AT&T on Jan. 25 to help students from Nashville's Hillwood High School make the connection between success in the classroom and in the workplace. Nearly 25 students from Hillwood spent part of the day shadowing the legislators, touring the House and Senate chambers, learning about the legislative process and understanding the dangers of texting while driving.

Legislators participating in the job shadow programs included Senator Thelma Harper and Representatives Harry Brooks, Kevin Brooks, Dale Ford, Brenda Gilmore, Jim Gotto, Debra Maggart, Gary Odom, Dennis Powers, John Ragan, Cameron Sexton, Mark White and Rick Womick.

Thanks to AT&T and our state legislators for participating in this unique event. You can read more about this day here.

25th Annual Bowl-a-Thon: Luau on the Lanes

The 2012 Bowl-a-Thon will begin on March 22nd. This is a grass-roots fundraising event where teams of bowlers raise funds and then have fun at area bowling centers. This event also provides opportunities for networking and team building...all while ensuring that JA programs are offered at no cost to area students!

Various bowling dates and locations are offered throughout the Spring. Sign up your team for this event by contacting Laura Buchanan.
