JA Volunteer Profile:
Kim Carpenter Drake
I have worked in
Nashville's nonprofit community for more than 20 years as a senior staff member,
consultant and volunteer. Nothing else compares with the JA experience! I know
every time I go into a classroom that I make a difference. The materials and
support that I get from the Junior Achievement staff insures that I am ready to
be successful and to enjoy every minute of my time.
It's not easy to be a
dedicated volunteer. It takes a commitment of time, energy and enthusiasm. All
of this fades in comparison to the tremendous satisfaction of the Junior
Achievement program. There are few things more rewarding than a room full of
young people who look up at you, smile and say "yeah, the JA lady is here!"

Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingensmith
Dear JA Supporters,
April's showers and
flowers have special meaning this year. They represent our hope and resiliency
as a country and as individuals.
National Financial Literacy Month is a
time to reflect on the financial crisis, and to prepare for the future. We
believe this starts with educating our youth in personal
finance.
Understanding these fundamental life skills should be a societal
priority for all young people entering adulthood.
JA stands ready to lead
the way. Sincerely,
Trent |
Help JA celebrate Financial Literacy Month in Middle Tennessee!

Spring into Financial Literacy
April is Financial Literacy month and in celebration JA is
offering free, downloadable teaching tools designed to help both teachers and
parents talk to young people about smart money m anagement. The lessons, called Junior
Achievement $ave, USA, can be downloaded here
and cover such topics as budgeting, the importance of saving, understanding the
cost of credit and how to use it, and planning how to pay for college.
The classroom lessons are targeted to grades 5 -12; each of
the 3 one-hour lessons is targeted to a specific range of grades for
implementation by Junior Achievement volunteers and schools. The easy-to-use downloadable courses focus on
saving and sharing money for grade 5; the importance of establishing a budget
to manage money for grades 6-8; and learning about credit for grades 9-12. All students will gain valuable financial
knowledge that could improve their ability to make wise financial choices in
the future.
In addition, Junior Achievement has created 16 lessons for
parents to use to talk to their children about personal financial literacy.
These new parent teaching tools are intended to foster dialogue about sound
personal finance practices, with a goal of having families put these practices
into action. We are thrilled to be able to provide these tools to you and hope
you will help in educating our young people to be financially responsible.

College students get chance to teach JA in a Day
Seven college students
interning at Ernst & Young this semester had a chance to reverse their traditional roles, spending the day teaching instead of learning. These accounting interns,
representing three different universities, shared lessons on working as a
team, building a community, making good decisions and paying taxes with 100 2nd
grade students in five classrooms for JA in a Day at Mt.
View Elementary
School.
The college interns from Auburn University,
the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Vanderbilt University
are enrolled in the accounting internship program at Ernst & Young,
in the assurance services and tax services departments. The students combined the knowledge they have received during their internships with JA's
lessons on community, government, goods and services, and local resources.
"In our knowledge-based
global economy, children need an education to secure their future, and
organizations like Ernst & Young need to recruit a talented workforce in
every country where they do business. As one of the world's great global
training organizations, we help our people realize their full potential. And through
educational programs and outreach such as Junior Achievement, we are able to
help young people in the communities around us realize their full potential as
well," said Sarah Scott, campus recruiting coordinator for Ernst & Young. |
