JA BizTown Breakfast 2009

BizTown Breakfast

On December 4th, nearly 300 community supporters gathered to learn more about JA BizTown. A group of JA BizTown citizens led the JA BizTown Today Show, interviewing fellow students, volunteers, teachers, sponsors, and parents about why they value the program and all that it teaches 5th graders. Attendees left the event with a greater understanding of how students make the connection between classroom learning and real-world application thanks to the JA BizTown program!

We would like to thank the students who worked so hard to ensure that the breakfast was fun, inspirational, and informative: Kristin  from Crockett Elementary, Wil  from Beech Elementary, Carmen  from Oak View Elementary, Genna from Sunset Elementary, and Samuel and Emma from Oak View Elementary. Thanks also  to the table hosts and speakers who made the event possible!

Dear JA Supporters,

On Tuesday, Dec. 15, Gnash, the fierce and fun mascot of the Nashville Predators, paid a visit to JA BizTown. The students of Gra-Mar Middle School (a Metro Nashville Public School) were treated to this special visit because of the generosity of two organizations in town. The Predators teamed up with Pepsi Bottling Group to sponsor the day that Gra-Mar made the trip to JA BizTown.

One of the newest opportunities we have to provide support to JA is through the sponsorship of school's visit days to JA BizTown. The Preds and Pepsi stepped up, along with several other organizations in town, including Franklin American Mortgage Company and Nissan North America, to supplement schools' attendance fees and cover the program's operating costs in order to allow us to continue to provide this program throughout the year.

The JA BizTown program connects what the kids are already learning in the classroom to the real world. By taking things like addition and subtraction and translating them into tasks like balancing a checkbook, kids are learning the skills they will need to make it as adults. And JA BizTown not only helps students perform better in the classroom, it helps change their attitudes about learning too.

JA BizTown truly is a valuable program. Those who have sponsored days recognize that value.  If you believe in the value of JA BizTown and want to share this program with others, think about scheduling a visit. Although we are taking a break from hosting schools from now through the end of January, JA BizTown will be back in full swing in February. Our doors are open; we'd be glad to show you what we love about JA BizTown.

To the Preds, Pepsi, Franklin American, Nissan, and all the teachers and volunteers: thank you for all you have done and will continue to do to make this and all of JA's programs a success for our kids here in Middle Tennessee.

Happy Holidays!

Trent

Opportunities for Education
JA launches new program with Oasis Center

JA is proud to announce the release of Economics on MY Street. This program's unique and innovative curriculum was developed by JA in conjunction with the Youth Mobilizers of Oasis Community Impact. Its youth-driven design and "real-life" approach are groundbreaking. The lessons were developed around content that comes from young people and can be applied to the economic challenges of growing up in under-resourced urban communities. Because many young people in these communities are never exposed to much of what is considered "base knowledge" around economics and personal finance, JA and Oasis Center partnered to develop a program to address these specific needs.

The curriculum is also special because it includes interactive activities and service-learning projects specifically related to financial literacy that teens can spearhead in their own communities. These activities not only teach fiscal responsibility, but also encourage classroom participation, school involvement, and community impact.

If you are interested in learning more about the program or would like to sign up, please visit our website or contact Andy Schenck at 615.627.1186 or andys@janash.com.
