Volunteers Can Be Found in Bowling Alleys, Too!
Did you know that $125 will send a JA kit and a trained
volunteer into a Middle Tennessee classroom? Community support is essential in
providing valuable JA programs to students - and you can be a part of this
effort!
Fall Bowl-a-Thon, September & October, 2009
We will be Bowling on the High Seas this fall as 250 bowlers
raise funds for JA programs. Then they will set sail at the bowling alley to
celebrate their fundraising efforts. The Bowl-a-Thon is easy to organize and a
fun event for coworkers, friends, and family members to get involved and
support JA! Get your company or organization in on the fun by contacting Laura Lovell.
Hollywood Bowl-a-Vard, 2010
It is never too early to begin fundraising for the spring
Bowl-a-Thon! Online fundraising pages are available now; please visit www.firstgiving.com/janash to get started. You can even join the event as a virtual bowler and
qualify for prizes and awards in May. On January 4th, the top spring
Bowl-a-Thon online fundraiser will receive a $50 gift card!
Do you need to get the word out about your business? The
Bowl-a-Thon features doorprizes awarded to hundreds of bowlers throughout the
year! Contact Laura Lovell to donate merchandise for this effort.

The New Shop in Town
JA BizTown's General Store gets a Facelift

Dollar General has been a dedicated supporter of Middle Tennessee's JA BizTown™ for the past 5 years and this is
year is no different, except for maybe an anything-but-small, total renovation
of the General Store.
As BizTown staff prepares a
busy calendar--45 schools and counting are already scheduled for the 2009/2010 year--
Dollar General volunteers are busy renovating, painting and discussing décor
much like a scene from a favorite HGTV show.
Students this year will have a
shopping experience like no other with a new contemporary store front and
laminate hardwood floors against the signature DG colors of black and yellow.
With authentic signage throughout the store, employees of the newly-renovated
JA BizTown location will experience a little of what it's like to work in an
actual Dollar General. Freya Hearn, JA BizTown Instructional Manager, said, "It feels
more realistic, more like a real store and that will get kids excited about
where they are working."
Emmit O'Ryan, owner of the Memphis-based O'Ryan Retail Group, which handles the printing and installing of all
signage for the almost 9,000 Dollar General Stores in the U.S., donated his staff for the job. Dustin Newsom and Derrick McCollum
of O'Ryan Group volunteered their time and
resources to make this renovation possible.
Thousands of Middle Tennessee students,
teaches and parent volunteers will see the results of their volunteered time
and effort once JA BizTown opens with its first school on Oct. 5th.

Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingensmith
 Dear JA Supporters,
This year, America
celebrated the first National Day of Service in remembrance of September 11,
2001. In this month's issue of Insight,
we pay tribute to those that serve JA in a variety of capacities. From donors
and supporters, to classroom volunteers, to special event participants, we
celebrate the countless contributions made to this organization. Without these dedicated
individuals, JA would not be able to fulfill our mission of bringing quality
financial literacy education to the kids of Middle Tennessee. To all of you, I
say a big "Thank you!"
But our mission is not fulfilled solely in the classroom.
Service to JA depends on more than the teachers who sign up for the programs
and the volunteers who teach in the classrooms and in JA BizTown. Service to JA
can come in the form of sharing time, talents, and resources.
If you have time to share, volunteer in the classroom or as
a stand-by volunteer in JA BizTown. If you have knowledge to share, consider
hosting a group of high school students for JA's Job Shadow program. If you
have money to share, think of sponsoring JA for one child. (A student can
receive JA in the classroom for $34 or a day in BizTown for $60.) And lastly,
if you have tangible resources to share--pens, extra batteries, a ream or two of
paper--please consider donating these items to Junior Achievement, as this will
help us more effectively manage our budget to reach more students.
In whatever way you choose to serve JA and your community at
large, know that your contributions will be greatly appreciated and your
efforts will have a long-lasting impact on the students of Middle Tennessee.
Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Trent

SPOTLIGHT on: JA's 2008-2009 Volunteer of the Year & Finalists
Last school year, nearly 1,100 volunteers taught JA programs
to 36,000 young people in classrooms across Middle Tennessee. These business
professionals, parents, college students, and retirees inspire students every
day to succeed in life. They take time out of their day to ensure that our
young people are workforce ready and financially responsible.
Thank you to all of our volunteers who help us achieve our
mission. We would like to highlight a handful of these individuals. They
include our 2008-2009 Volunteer of the Year and finalists.
Dustin Adkison
has been employed by Bridgestone Americas, Inc for the last eight years. Dustin
has been a JA volunteer since 1997, and he continues to dedicate his time to
the organization because of "the impact Junior Achievement made on me as a
student and the passion I have to support America's youth," he says.
Wanda Henslee is
a long-time employee of State Farm Insurance in Murfreesboro. She says she teaches JA
programs because she loves the classroom setting and has even recruited her
daughter to teach JA programs. "The feedback from both the teachers and
students is immediate and heartfelt," she says. "JA has given me the
opportunity to keep current with school issues and our community's needs."
David Riesland
first became involved with JA eight years ago through Barge, Waggoner, Sumner,
& Cannon's participation in the JA Bowl-a-Thon. At this event, he was
approached about being a classroom volunteer. "After much deliberation, I tried
it, loved it, and have been doing it ever since," he says. David has been
volunteering with the same three teachers since 2002.
Volunteer of the Year Richard Sale is a
resident of Brentwood and senior vice
president of Ross Sinclaire & Associates. He has served as a JA volunteer
for eight years working mostly with East Nashville
high schoolers. Richard tried several different volunteer organizations before
finding the right fit at Junior Achievement. "JA has given me a chance to
'leverage myself,'" he says.
Jeff Sampson has
20 years in the finance industry; nine of those have been with Caterpillar
Financial Services. Jeff has been a JA volunteer since 2002, teaching in 2nd,
3rd, and 4th grade classrooms. He has also served as
CAT's company coordinator and organized Job Shadow as well. Jeff says,
"Volunteering for JA gives me whole new kind of job satisfaction."
