Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingensmith
 Dear JA Supporters,
Last week, JA hosted its annual Franklin American Mortgage
Golf Classic presented by Gaylord Entertainment benefiting Junior Achievement.
The event was a success, thanks to all of the local
businesses that donated items for the silent
and live auction and the more than 200
people who came out in support of JA during the 2-day event.
I want to extend a special thank you to Franklin
American Mortgage for their sponsorship of the event. Their generous
contributions and participation in this event makes it possible to for us to serve the
Middle Tennessee community each year.
I would also like to thank the staff at Gaylord Entertainment and Gaylord
Springs Golf Links who helped make this event run so smoothly for our guests.
These hardworking individuals met us early in the morning and stayed late into
the evening to ensure the players were well-fed, hydrated, and having a good
time. I and the JA staff appreciated their enthusiasm and dedication.
The partnership with Gaylord and
Franklin American Mortgage extends off the golf course as well. Franklin American Mortgage supplies JA with funding
throughout the year, as well as classroom and JA
BizTown volunteers and Board Members. And not only does Gaylord
Entertainment co-sponsor the golf tournament each year, but the company also supports
JA through grants, fundraising with the Bowl-a-Thon, volunteering in the
classroom, and serving as members of the Board of Directors.
As another successful school year comes to a close and we
look ahead to a new fiscal year and a new school year, I would like to thank
each organization and individual who helps Junior Achievement thrive year after
year. The value of our programs is increasingly more relevant in today's world,
and I commend each of you who understand JA's impact enough to share your
resources to help fulfill our mission here in Middle Tennessee.
Thanks again and have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Trent

JA BizTown Welcomes Visitors for Annual Open House
On May 26, JA BizTown had an Open House for
students to share with their friends and family members what they did when
visiting the Town during the school year.
Clusters of
students bounded through the doors with their friends and family in tow. It did not take
long to realize the students were in charge! There were enthusiastic conversations about selling and pricing
products, how to pay off loans, visiting the JA BizTown Bank to open a checking account,
making bank deposits, balancing checkbooks, and the importance of setting goals
to be successful.
The students talked
about how hard they worked and how they understood why their parents were so
tired at the end of the day--priceless!
After the JA BizTown experience, students displayed confidence, aptitude, and the
ability to communicate work readiness skills.
The importance of teamwork, returning from breaks on time, and being
courteous to customers were mentioned to family members in their student-led
tours.
Parents also shared stories their
children told them about their favorite businesses in the town, how fun it was
to visit the restaurant and to shop during their breaks, and placing song
requests from the Radio Station.
As another school year has come to a close at JA BizTown, it
has became evident that the students are the driving force behind the success of the program. They are in charge and they can
tell you all about it. Just ask and if you don't believe it, come see for yourself! JA BizTown's doors are always open for tours.

JA in a Day Sessions are Successful
With 130 classes taught in its first year, our new JA in a Day
program has proven to be a very popular alternative to the traditional 5-session format with volunteers from some of Middle Tennessee's most
prominent corporations taking time out of their busy schedules to teach the JA
curriculum in just a matter of hours.
On Thursday, May 28th it was Deloitte's turn to shine
as their employees volunteered their time at Mt. Juliet Elementary School to teach the JA
economic programming to Pre-K
through 5th grade students in all 32 classrooms. In
addition to their day with the students, these employees spent an hour being
trained by our JA staff and preparing the curriculum on their own time to
ensure the JA in a Day would be a great success. Mr. Steve Brown, Principal of Mt. Juliet Elementary School,
kicked off the day with a presentation to thank the volunteers for their time
and dedication to the students.
Once again, thanks to our dedicated volunteers such as those from
Deloitte, students of Middle Tennessee schools are receiving this invaluable education which is needed to assist them in learning
to become successful adults in the business world.
In addition to the 130 JA in a Day classes over the past school
year, some other highlights from this year include the following:
- 10% increase
in JA BizTown students, representing the most students ever reached in BizTown!
-
26% increase
in middle school programs
-
8% increase
in high school programs
- A grand
total of 1,187 classroom volunteers - representing a 24% increase from last
year and our highest volunteer participation ever!
Thanks again to all of our dedicated volunteers and teachers for
making this a very rewarding and successful year for the JA Programs
Department. We look forward to working with you all next school year. |
