Dear JA Partner,
As the weather turns cooler and the leaves turn color, JA remains focused on education. Students are taking over the music industry for Music Row Job Shadow Day, JA BizTown is running in high-gear, and classroom programs are starting up all across the region. It is through your generous support that each of these programs are made possible. Thanks for all you do for Middle Tennessee's children! |

Buzz of the Biz
Getting Adjusted to Biztown? These people have!!!!
By Parker B., Staff Reporter of the Biztown News Walnut Grove Elementary School
Not sure what to say about J.A. Biztown? These people are! "It's so exciting, I feel like my head is going to explode!" says David Jones of the TV/Web Page Office. "My job's so fun I'm in Paradise!" The D.J.'s had nothing to say but, "I'm busy. Can't talk." Not much but proof that they love their jobs. The resturant is selling tasty food too, with brilliant ads! The Pedigree Dog Store is also selling with smiles on their faces. The mayor is having the time of his life! After some successful tracking, the recently found mayor said, "It's great to be the mayor of JA Biztown" (Or something like that.) Well if you ever think on the downside of Biztown, remember this and your great experiences there.

Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingensmith
Dear JA Supporters,
The economy has been a hot
topic lately. Reports of turmoil on Wall Street and uncertainty of the
global financial situation have many people wondering what has to happen in order
for things to get better. More importantly, what can we do to ensure that our
children are prepared to lead this country with the educational background,
practical skills and critical thinking to deal with the financial legacy we
leave them? Consider the severity of the situation. The U.S. Commerce
Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the American public
spends more money than it earns after taxes.
Junior
Achievement has the needed programs in place, ready to go. Working closely with
the business and education communities, JA delivers programs that teach K-12 students
age-appropriate, hands-on lessons about how to be financially literate. And
JA of Middle Tennessee is fortunate to have a committed Board of Directors made
up of community leaders and business executives who tirelessly work to bring JA
programs to Middle Tennessee students.
At the annual
Board Retreat, Mayor Karl Dean shared his vision for education and that our
children will be more successful when the community is involved in the
schools. Junior Achievement puts the community in the classrooms daily. We
have corporate sponsors, amazing volunteers and dedicated teachers who are all
giving selflessly to our young people. JA is proud to be part of the
economic solution, part of the education solution, and we thank you all for
supporting what we do. Your time, treasures and talents used to support these
educational lifelines will help young people in the United States-and around the
world-preserve the future of the global economy.
Thank you for
your commitment to the boundless potential of young people,
Trent

Deloitte hosted a recognition luncheon for Jay Tippens, winner of the Points of Light Institute's Daily Points of Light Award. (Pictured L-R: Andy Schenck, JA Director of Programs; Jay Tippens, JA volunteer and Deloitte employee; and Larry Quinlan, Deloitte CIO.)
JA volunteer nationally recognized on Web
One of Nashville's
committed volunteers received recognition for his community involvement Oct. 3.
Jay Tippens, who lives and works in Hermitage, earned the Points of Light
Institute's Daily Points of Light award for volunteerism. Jay's coworkers
honored him with a luncheon held Friday at Deloitte, where he is employed.
Deloitte CIO Larry Quinlan was on hand for the awards presentation.
Tippens received the Daily Points of
Light award and was featured on the Points of Light Web site for his
involvement with Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee (JA).
"Jay's passion for young people is
evident not only in his support of JA, but in the dedicated effort he has made
to impact 570 students over the past five years," said JA President Trent
Klingensmith.
Beginning in mid-September, the
Points of Light Institute-an Atlanta-based organization for the advancement of
innovative civic change strategies- recognized individual corporate volunteers on
its Web site daily. Because of Deloitte's status as a leader in volunteer
service, the company was allowed to spotlight volunteers on three different
days. Deloitte's volunteers include employees from New
York and San Francisco,
in addition to Jay.
Jay has donated his time to JA
since 2003 as a Deloitte corporate volunteer. He has taught JA's classroom
programs in local elementary and middle schools and has recruited other
Deloitte employees to teach JA classes as well. Since he
began volunteering, Jay has taught 23 classes in three schools with 15
different teachers.
Jay was
recognized as JA's Volunteer of the Year in 2006.

JA & NISSAN PARTNER TO BUILD FUTURES FOR FRANKLIN FAMILIES
On Friday, Oct. 3, JA staff members teamed up with Nissan employees to work on a Habitat for Humanity building project in Williamson County. A big thank you goes out to Nissan for giving JA the opportunity to give back to the community!
JA staff members worked hard to help Nissan and Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County.
Betsy Burkett, Jessica Bowers, and Laura Lovell (L-R) primed and painted a bedroom in one of the two houses going up simultaneously at the Franklin build site. ________________________

Opportunities for Education
|
The Programs Department is off to a great start and has
diligently been recruiting volunteers and assigning classes for the 08-09
school year. So far, over 1,000 requests have come in, with nearly 850 of those
requests for the fall semester alone. To date, 500 classes have been
filled, and by the end of this school year we should be well on our way of
reaching 45,000 students with JA programs this year!
Thanks to our teachers for welcoming JA programs and
volunteers into your classrooms - and thanks to our volunteers for delivering
these programs and providing such a unique opportunity for our kids of Middle
Tennessee!
Upcoming JA in a Day:
Not only do we reach students through our traditional 5-7 classroom
visits, but sometimes we'll take a school by storm and present a JA program in just one day! This year, volunteers from HSBC, a nationwide sponsor of JA, will
be teaching all 4th grade classes at Mt. View Elementary on October
24th - JA in a Day style! Stay tuned for our next newsletter to hear
more about this and an upcoming JA in a Day at a school near you.
 Deandra Sykes
Who's New? Meet
Deandra Sykes, student intern at JA. We are so excited to be a part of Big Picture
High School's Learning Through
Internships program this year. Deandra is a15-year-old sophomore at Big Picture High School, with BIG aspirations to move to L.A. one day and pursue a
career in music, modeling or acting. However, she does have a Plan B-anesthesiology.
Through Big
Picture High
School's unique and untraditional method of
teaching, Deandra will be joining us on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. for her internship. As of this moment, Deandra has her own BIG office, and
has a BIG list of projects to get started on. One of which any teenager these
days would be excited to call "work" - JA of Middle TN's own Facebook
page. Utilizing Facebook and other means
of social networking has proved to be a very effective way of reaching JA alumni,
and serves as an informational and volunteer recruitment tool.
We welcome Deandra onboard, and in any of her pursuits, she
has a bright future ahead of her!
The Programs Department,
Andy, Karen, Caroline & Holly
