JA and Vanderbilt: Partnering for the greater good.

Dear JA Supporters,

Last month it was announced that Junior Achievement is a recipient of a 2008 Vanderbilt Health at One Hundred Oaks grant for our programs at Glencliff High School. With this grant we will be able to implement JA programming across the whole school; increasing our impact on students' lives.

We have had great feedback from teachers. After a presentation last week, Andy Schenck, our Director of Programs, said that "Glencliff teachers are really excited to get their classes signed up for JA." Along with classroom programs, we will also promote Job Shadow opportunities to Glencliff students.

At the high school level, a JA program assists students in seeking a career, realizing their life potential, perfecting financial planning principals, and fostering ethical decision-making through engaging and fun techniques.

Vanderbilt's partnership with the One Hundred Oaks area is proof that they are committed to this community and its residents. Their approach is an example for others who come into this area on how to be good neighbor and responsible resident.

Warm Regards,
Trent

JA recognizes local businesses for dedication
to community

Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee recently recognized twelve local businesses for their contributions to the community. These companies received the prestigious Community Impact Award at a back-to-school luncheon held Aug. 21. The Community Impact Awards are presented in recognition of the number of JA classes taught by employee volunteers during the 2007-2008 academic term. Caterpillar Financial Services took the top award for the most JA classes taught by employees, totaling 133 classes last year.
Participants and award recipients were treated to lunch in JA BizTown, where they heard presentations from JA President Trent Klingensmith, JA Volunteer of the Year Ami Harvey, and JA Corporate Liaison for Deloitte John Doerge. Doerge gave ideas for companies to recruit JA volunteers, while Harvey shared the passion she feels for JA, which led her to volunteer in 10 classes during the 2007-2008 school year.

Opportunities for Exploration
Buzz of the Biz

JA BizTown is buzzing with anticipation as citizens gear up for their visit! With fall teacher training workshops completed, volunteers will be next in line to experience hands-on training in preparation for the arrival of the first students of the 2008-2009 year on Monday, September 29.

Three new staff members have joined the team and will be working with the citizens as they operate their businesses, publish newspapers, produce TV shows, shop and do the many other tasks involved in running the JA BizTown economy!

Over 55 schools have already signed up to the program and we are hoping to add another 20 schools in the spring semester. If you know of a 5th grader who would benefit from the experience of JA BizTown, please encourage the school to contact us and we can provide all the information they need! Please call or email Rachel Dyer, Director of JA BizTown, at 615-627-1194.

With the continued support of Middle Tennessee sponsors, schools, and dedicated volunteers, the 2008-2009 school year will prove to be an inspiration to thousands of students preparing them for life after school.
