Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingensmith
Dear JA Supporters,
Junior Achievement continues to represent a unique part of
our society. Teaching children about the economics of life is our core purpose.
We do this with strong community support, better programs, enhanced exposure,
and operational effectiveness. But in the end, it is the exceptional people
involved in Junior Achievement that really make a difference.
Some of the real champions that make this organization great
are the selfless and inspiring pool of classroom volunteers, teachers who see
JA as vital, and the generous contributors and Board Members who continually
perpetuate JA's purpose.
The many individuals and organizations that supported JA of
Middle Tennessee last year are shining examples of exactly how the people in
our community are making a difference. It is these people who help make JA what
it is today, and as we move into a new year, we know that JA will continue to be
relevant, inspiring, and impactful, and our purpose will continue to be vital
to those who build the future.
Warm Regards, Trent |

(L-R) Ami Harvey, Beth Torres, and Amanda McGaugh JA Names its Teacher and Volunteer of the Year
Two special community members were
honored by Junior Achievement of Middle Tennessee during pre-game activities at
last Saturday's Nashville Sounds home game against the Omaha Royals. These
women received the prestigious Teacher of the Year and Volunteer of the Year
awards from JA. Winners of the 2008 awards are Amanda McGaugh, Teacher
of the Year, and Ami Harvey, Volunteer of the Year.
McGaugh and Harvey were
nominated out of 1,000 volunteers and teachers involved with JA throughout
Middle Tennessee. These women were selected for the awards based on their
involvement in JA, their commitment to the education of today's youth and their
passion to carry out the mission of the organization.
Harvey, who represents
Caterpillar Financial Services, has been contributing to JA in various ways
since 2005. She has volunteered with almost 500 students and 16 different
teachers in three grades. Last school year alone, Harvey
taught ten JA classes in three Davidson
County schools. These volunteer experiences give her the opportunity to
educate others about the programs JA offers and recruit volunteers to implement
these programs in classrooms throughout the community.
Harvey hopes involving others will have a lasting impact
on Middle Tennessee's children. "I think community involvement is vital to
helping today's youth be prepared for life after school and to be a good
citizen in their community," she said. "While there are many wonderful teachers
educating our youth, teachers can only do so much," she added. "Even the best
teachers need help reaching children, especially with the concepts offered by
JA."
McGaugh, the Business Academy
teacher at Ravenwood
High School, has hosted
JA programs, including JA Titan, Success Skills, Economics, and Global Business
Ethics, in her high school classrooms for the past five years. "The curriculum
JA provides works hand in hand with the state standards for those courses," she
said.
When asked why she invites JA
programs and volunteers into her classroom, McGaugh explained it is because she
has "seen the effect that the program has on my students first hand and I've
become a strong believer in JA because of that. I've learned to be much more
open-minded about the way students learn."
Both Harvey and McGaugh have
noticed the impact JA volunteers have on the students. "Capturing the attention
of today's teenagers takes much more than an overhead projector and a text
book," McGaugh commented. Harvey
agreed that she can see the students' excitement when "someone different walks
in their classroom and they have a chance to do something outside their normal
daily routine."
JA appreciates all of the time
and effort put forth by all of its volunteers and teachers. If you are ready to
sign up again for this school year, please contact the Programs Department at education@janash.com or 615-627-1195. | |

JA BizTown Buzz
Each day in JA BizTown, students produce a
newspaper they sell to their fellow JA BizTown citizens. Each edition includes
news articles, feature stories, editorials, and of course - advertisements.
These are just a couple of examples of the great writing from recent JA BizTown
Newspaper staff members.

| CEO Editorial by Andre'
CEO of The JA Newspaper, Cedar Grove Elementary
JA BizTown is a great place to learn about business. They teach you how to write checks and to deposit tickets. You also can learn how to get along with people you do not like. They should make this into a over night thing so we can learn how to wake up early and be on time to our job. JA BizTown is like a real job you have brakes and you get off when it is time for you to get off. For all of the places that's why JA BizTown is the best place to be.

JA BizTown by Logan Advertising Executive of the JA Newspaper, Lipscomb Elementary School
I have enjoyed meeting with my business and the employees. I didn't know what my job was really about but now I understand it better. Some of the other employees have helped me with it and I have made several new friends. We shared a lot. We took turns giving ideas for the radio ads and the TV ads. There was a lot of team work in the business group.
