Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingesmith
A
note from President. . .
One
of the most unique events that JA of Middle Tennessee holds each year is our
Awareness Breakfast. This event is a chance to brag about the difference JA is
making and to introduce individuals from the Middle Tennessee area to the
opportunities that JA provides. The event will also offer a fresh perspective
of JA from students, teachers, and volunteers.
I
want to extend my appreciation to the Awareness Breakfast committee, co-chaired
by George Armistead, Owner of New Business Development, and Joe White,
President of NovaCopy. These two gentlemen have been working hard to ensure
that this event is a huge success.
The
Awareness Breakfast will be held December 18th, 2007 at Loews
Vanderbilt Hotel where Tom Negri and his staff always go out of their way to
create a warm and inviting atmosphere for the event. Please contact Liz Hall if
you are interested in hosting a table.
Thank
you to all of our supporters, I sincerely appreciate all that you do.
Warm
regards,
Trent Klingensmith

Dear JA Partner,
November
is a month for giving thanks: we thank our veterans for serving our country and
we give thanks for our families, friends, and many blessings.
At JA, we are giving thanks for our wonderful
volunteers, teachers, and all of those who financially support the programs
Junior Achievement delivers each day.
Through your investments of time and money, you are the inspiration to
thousands of young people in Middle Tennessee.
Together we are all improving the education for students in our
community and giving them opportunities they didn't know existed before
JA.
From the JA staff and all of our
students, Thank you for all that you have given.

JA + Music Business = Music Row Job Shadow
What did
you want to be when you were 15 years old?
Did you long to finish school and get into the "real world"? Did you sit in a classroom dreaming about a
career in music? On October
26th, 75 students from 24 middle and high schools across middle Tennessee weren't
dreaming; they were actively taking the first steps towards a career in the
music industry. Junior Achievement's
Music Row Job Shadow gave these students the opportunity to spend part of their
day in a wide range of fields at a variety of music industry locations. The students
met bright and early at Curb Café for breakfast and a Q&A with a panel of
professionals from the music industry.
The panel included Susan Abington of SunTrust's Music Row Division,
Sarah Skates of Music Row Magazine and Thad Keim of Compass Records. Students asked great questions including how
to get a loan to get started and what to do now to insure future success. After the
panel, students spent a few hours shadowing music industry employees hard at
work. Some got the chance to give an
opinion on potential new songs, while others had lessons in songwriting. Students ate lunch with their hosts then were
dropped off at Rocketown for a wrap-up event featuring liv e music by Faith in
Shadows and Ivy. Student
evaluations reveal that participants learned a great deal from their
experiences. A student who shadowed at
Compass Records said the best advice she received was "not to worry about
having connections, but just do what you are best at and connections will
come." Another student shared that
before Music Row Job Shadow, "I thought I wanted to study the business end of
the music industry, but I learned that production is more creative and more
interesting." What great lessons for
students to learn so early in life! We want to
give a hearty thank you to all of our hosts who helped make the day a success: 104.5 The Zone 94FM The Fish Compass Records Gospel Music Association Mix 92.9 Nashville Symphony Ripcord Music Publishing Rocketown SESAC Songwriters Guild of America Universal Music Group Word Entertainment Zavitson Music Group Pictured above: TOP - Austin Agee, Mt. JA BizTown Buzz
Each day in JA BizTown, students produce a newspaper they sell to their fellow JA BizTown citizens. Each edition includes news articles, feature stories, editorials, and of course - advertisements. These are just a few examples of the great writing from recent JA BizTown Newspaper staff members.

JA BizTown Price: Half a Million Dollars
An editorial by Tyler Hill
5th grader Sunset Elementary
$500,000! Wow, that's a lot of money don't you think? I do, but I definitely think it's worth it. I think we are so lucky to have such a place!! I asked my parents if they ever got to go to a place like JA BizTown, and they said they never got to go to a place like this. They did not learn all of this until they were in college.
I think this is so fun and it is so cool to think that we are doing what our parents do every day!!
Preparing for
JA BizTown: What I've Learned So Far
By David Woods
5th grader Lipscombe Elementary
I think I have learned a lot preparing for JA BizTown. I have learned how to write checks and to vote. I think JA BizTown will teach me a lot more than I already know. I hope our business will be very successful.

The Boss's Editorial
By JA BizTown Newspaper Editor,
5th grader - Lipscomb Elementary
Have you ever been wandering around on your lunch break, and you have no clue what you would like to purchase? Or, you want to buy something, but you don't have enough money? Those are things lots of people question.
Managing money and purchasing good items are important.
Sometimes, I will walk into a JA BizTown store and immediately see something I like. I take a look at the price and walk straight out of the shop. Overpricing is bad for business in my opinion.
It took our staff a while to see what price our newspapers should be. We had two starting questions: What will make a profit? And, what is reasonable?
I believe more people will buy what you have if it's reasonably priced. |
