Dear JA Partner,
Each year, fall brings us cooler
weather, changing leaves, football, and students back in classes. For Junior
Achievement, it also brings amazing volunteers who bravely stand in front of
classrooms and provide these young people with programs about financial literacy that can change lives. And if you find yourself
asking why this is important, remember that in 2004 more people filed for
bankruptcy than graduated from college. And that more teenagers have credit
cards than savings accounts. We owe it to the next generation to help them be
successful and Junior Achievement has all the tools these young people need to
be productive and successful members of a global economy.
On Monday, October 1st,
the Tennessean ran an article
called "Taking your favorite charity to work" in the LIVING section. And this
month, JA is encouraging you to do just that. We ask that you talk about your
experience with JA, talk about your students and the lessons you are teaching.
Talk about your involvement in events and that your financial contribution is
making a difference in Middle Tennessee. Then help others find a way to inform,
invest in, and inspire the young people in our community.

Program Spotlight: Careers with a Purpose
Can
positive values, life affirmations, and ethical decision-making skills help
people make career and life choices? Can
people make career choices which allow them to recognize their individual noble
purpose? The answer
to both of these questions is a resounding YES!!! JA Careers with a Purpose introduces students to the
importance of seeking careers that help them realize their life's
potential. With volunteers serving as
role models in a classroom, the program demonstrates the importance of positive
values, life maxims, and ethical decision-making within the context of career
and life decisions. Students will learn
the difference between a job and a career, explore their skills and interests
and how they relate to career choices with in the 16 career clusters, and will
use a decision-making process to consider post-high school career options. We are
proud to introduce this exciting new program, made possible in part by a grant
from the HCA foundation. If you are
interested in learning more about this program, please contact the Programs
Department at 615-627-1195.

Buzz Around BizTown By Houston Baker 5th grader Beech Elementary
Getting a check- ing account is a new thing for most fifth graders. Also receiv- ing a voter registra- tion card is pretty cool....Learning and working in businesses should give us an added advantage when we enter the real workplace. Going through the interview process was filled with suspense and excitement while we waited to hear what jobs we would be responsible for.
Getting prepared for JA BizTown was a lot of fun!

Does JA BizTown Really Help?
By Catherine Hines
5th grader - Beech Elementary
Sooner or later we will all have to find a job. Our teachers teach us reading, writing and math because they know we will have to use this in the future. So, JA BizTown really helps because it teaches us how businesses work. When we are looking for a job in the future, we will thank JA BizTown for teaching us how the business world works.
