Marina Dredging and Shoal Management Projects Underway | |
The City is working to protect and improve two of the island's important features: the marina and the beach.
Dredging has begun at the Isle of Palms marina and should be complete by April. The dredge will remove the build-up of muddy material on the bottom to increase boaters' ability to safely operate, particularly at low tides.
A shoal, attaching to the beach, is causing focused erosion on the north end of the island. The movement of sand is expected to begin in March once the City receives all permits. Large trucks will be on the beach, but no construction will happen on Easter weekend.

Parking Buzz: City Council and Planning Commission schedule joint meeting for Monday, February 20 at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall
No decisions have been made about parking, but it remains an island hot topic. After hosting three successful forums to gain input from the citizens, the Planning Commission is ready to make a recommendation to City Council at a joint meeting scheduled for Monday, February 20 at 5:00 p.m. The Planning Commission will recommend that City Council implement a "annual pass" system for parking. Council could accept the recommendation, not accept it, modify it or take no action to allow for further considerations. If it is accepted, many details, such as cost and distribution, still must be decided. No changes related to a "pass" system will occur to parking in the 2012 beach season. No citizen comments will be taken at this meeting, but everyone is welcome to attend and listen. A video of the meeting will be posted on the City's website the following day. |
