The City is administering a beach restoration project that should occur in spring and summer of 2008. At the end of the project, the beach will be healthy, dry and wide and all of the sandbags will be removed. Interested in learning more? Did you know that the Recreation Center maintains a library of donated books for residents and visitors? In the Magnolia Room, readers will find novels, non-fiction, bestsellers, children's books, self-help books, cook books and plenty more. The library works on the honor system. Drop off your old books and pick up some new ones. Or, simply borrow a book and return it when you are finished!

Front Beach will be transformed into an island festival on Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Come and enjoy yourself while benefitting Sullivan's Island Elementary School. Events include games, food tents, a craft tent, tie-die t-shirt making, jump land, a silent auction, a crab cake contest and live music by Ronnie Johnson. Please note that the south-bound side of Ocean Boulevard will be closed to vehicular traffic after 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25th. Both sides of Ocean Boulevard from 10th Avenue to Pavilion Avenue in the Front Beach district will be closed to vehicular traffic on Saturday during the festival. We will meet you there!
Highlights from Special Council and Ways and Means
 
Following are highlights from the Special City Council meeting and the Ways and Means Committee meeting, both of which occurred on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Complete minutes will be posted on the City's website once they are approved.

Special City Council: Council approved First Reading of Ordinance 2008-01, which relates to refinancing the General Obligation Bond issued for the Isle of Palms Marina. Council also voted unanimously to award the contract for construction of the new Public Safety Building to the low bidder, Mashburn Construction. Finally, Council approved agreements related to the beach restoration project.

Ways and Means: The Committee heard from the City Treasurer who reported that City anticipates ending the year on budget. The Committee spent a significant amount of time reviewing the draft of the City budget for Fiscal Year 09. A motion passed to move forward with the replacement of the bulkhead at the Isle of Palms Marina. A motion passed to approve a cost overrun of $10,757 for the Local Comprehensive Beach Management Plan, which has recently received state approval. Two motions from the Real Property Committee passed: one to approve an expenditure of $1,600 for electrical repairs at Tidal Wave Water Sports and one to approve a $5,000 expenditure to complete re-planking of a face dock at the IOP Marina. One motion from the Public Works Committee passed: approval of a budgeted $13,200 expenditure to restructure the 30th Avenue ditch. One motion from the Recreation Committee passed: approval of $11,500 expenditure to clean, seal and paint exposed exterior metal beams on porches and to replace gutters on the gymnasium. One motion from the Public Safety Committee to approve a proposal from Schupp Enterprises to fill in beach holes.
