We've all been told that water is essential to good health. But just what are the benefits, and how much should you drink?
The human body is made up of around 55 - 75% water with some body parts containing more water than others. The human brain, for example, comprises up to 90% water.
A relatively small drop in our body fluid levels can result in significant health problems. For example, a 5% drop can reduce energy levels by 25-30%, while a 15% drop can actually be fatal!
It has been estimated that up to 80% of the population are currently suffering from some level of energy loss due to lack of proper hydration! Wow.
So how much water should you be drinking per day for optimum health? The common recommendation is 2 litres per day for the average person, although some sources recommend higher levels, particularly for active people.
There is even a practice known as "water therapy" whose advocates claim it can cure everything from arthritis to cancer, that involves drinking a large amount of water (anywhere from 1L - 3L) first thing in the morning, 1 hour before eating.
(NB: The author makes a habit of drinking 1.5L of water each morning before breakfast and feels better for it, but recommends anyone considering new therapies seek medical advice first)
So then, it seems there are some definite health benefits associated with drinking plenty of water. And a healthy hydrated body translates to beautiful skin and sparkling eyes, giving you that true 'healthy glow' from within.
Water really is nature's greatest beauty secret. Drink up!
