Dear Congregation Leaders,

The 2010-2011 church year is drawing to a close. We at the district office have heard there were some exciting things happening in congregations with successful fund raising endeavors, new social justice activities and searches successfully completed.  There were also some disappointments and challenges with staff departures, canvass results and minister searches. But now it's time to take a breath, relax and renew for the church year about to start.

On behalf of the BCD Board of Directors and staff I want to thank all the church leaders and ministers who worked hard to make their congregations function well and keep the spirit of Unitarian Universalism alive in our corner of New England.  We look forward to working with you in the new church year.

Rev. Bill Zelazny

District Executive

Summer for the BCD Office, Staff and Board

·         The BCD office will be closed from June 17 to August 16.  The Administrator will check mail, phone messages and email sent to the district office once a week and forward items to the District Executive as needed.

·         The District Executive will be away to attend General Assembly June 18 - 27.  He will be working during July and August except for some planned vacation time, tentatively set for July 23 - 31 and August 7 -14.  He can be contacted at his regular home office phone number and email -  401-353-5334 / zelaz@aol.com.

·         The District Board of Directors will not have a meeting in July, but will convene for their annual planning and development retreat that includes a meeting on August 5 - 6.

·         BCD in Brief is not published in July.  The next issue will be in late August.

Updating Email and Contact Information for Presidents and Staff

In late July or early August the BCD office will be sending out information about August, September and October workshops and seminars.  To ensure that all new presidents, officers, ministers and staff receive these announcements and the BCD in Brief the BCD Administrator requests that the name, email, street address and phone number of newly elected board presidents and clerks, newly hired staff and newly arrived ministers, settled and interim, be sent to the Office at BCDOffice@verizon.net as soon as possible, but not later than August 1.

Emergency Preparedness

Hurricane Season has officially started and, as was seen in early June, New England is not immune to tornados.  A "how to" Emergency Preparedness Manual, developed by District Executive, Bill Zelazny, is available on the BCD website, www.bcduua.org to help congregations develop plans to address various natural and human-made emergencies.  On the website, go to "Resources and Links" then look under "E" to find the links to the manual other materials.  Summer, when other congregation activities are at a minimum, is a good time to start to work on developing an emergency response plan.  Contact the District Executive, zelaz@aol.com, for additional information or assistance.

BCDers Welcome to the Ingathering Reception at General Assembly

An In-gathering Reception will be held on Wednesday, June 22at 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. in the Convention Center Room 217D.  As has been done for the past three years, the event will be regional with UUs from the four New England districts attending.  This is an opportunity to connect with other BCD attendees, as well as, meet UUs from the neighboring districts while getting information about General Assembly, hearing what is happening in the other districts and singing a few songs to get everyone in the spirit for the Opening Ceremony that starts at 7:00 pm.

Fire at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brunswick, Maine

The Northern New England District Executive, Mary Higgins, reported that on June 6 the Unitarian Universalist Church in Brunswick, ME, experienced a devastating fire in the sanctuary.   Their minister, Rev. Sylvia Stocker, and members of the church and community watched as fire fighters worked for many hours to put out the flames that enveloped their sanctuary.  Though their spirits are undaunted, the members of the Brunswick church need help to rebuild and return to their church home.  A donation to the Brunswick UU Fire Fund can be made by mail to the NNED, 10 Ferry St., Ste #318, Concord, NH 03301 with Brunswick Fire Fund in the memo line.   To make a donation online go tohttps://prod.mkat.com/mktixrun/shared/mknporun?dir=mvarts.MKT-443.UUDO-E20994&Event=UUDO-E20994&page=mkeventregisterfrm.jsp
