Spring Breakers Flock to Anderson County to Help Habitat for Humanity
This spring, college students traded in their swimsuits for paint brushes to help Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County. Since February, more than 100 students from across North America have traveled to Oak Ridge to volunteer their time helping low-income families.
Groups from University of Michigan, University of New Brunswick, Hiram College, Oklahoma State University, Purdue University, Rutgers University, and Ohio University all signed up to volunteer as part of Habitat for Humanity International's Collegiate Challenge Program, a program that provides year-round opportunities for youth to use their vacations to help build and preserve homes. This year's round of spring break volunteers will wrap up over the next two weeks with student groups from Lansing Catholic Central High School and SUNY Binghamton.
Special thanks to those that have helped with hospitality: Calvary Baptist Church, Dave and Patty Campbell, Central Baptist Church, Chick-fil-A, Firehouse Subs, First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, Gondolier, Grace Covenant Church, Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, Norris Lions Club, Valerie Rivas, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Stephanie Thomas, and Taco Bell.
