The Depth of Need

Sagging roofs and overcrowded rooms - step inside the substandard housing of Anderson County...

Substandard housing has many causes and comes in many shapes and sizes.  Poverty, inadequate housing options, lack of access to financing.  Too many people living in too few rooms, roofs that leak, walls that sag.

In Anderson County - and in communities around the world - low-income families often are forced to choose between putting food on the table and having a safe roof above their heads.  The families do the best they can, making a home out of a house that is sometimes literally falling down around them.

Take a moment to explore the housing conditions that families endured before partnering with Habitat to build a simple, decent home of their own.  Click to continue >>
Habitat and Philotechnics Dedicate House at Hickory Ridge Subdivision
Slater House DedicationThe Slater family will soon own a simple, decent home of their own with help from Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County's homeownership program.

Habitat and the Slater family celebrated with a house dedication service on August 7. During the service, Andy Armbrust from Philotechnics, Ltd. presented the house keys to Cathy Slater, the soon-to-be homeowner. The completion of the Slater house marks the sixth house completed at the Hickory Ridge Subdivision in Clinton.
Hickory Ridge Subdivision Update

Work continues on the Wright, Giles, DeJarnette, and Daugherty houses.  Here's what you've missed if you haven't been to the construction site recently:
  • At the Wright and Giles Houses, we are currently working to finish up on the siding and porches.  We hope to start on the interior trim work for both houses in the next couple of weeks.
  • At the DeJarnette House, the septic system has been installed and we are working to finish up on the flooring and start the interior trim work soon.
  • At the Daugherty House, we have finished the siding and the drywall has just been completed.  Painting will be the next task for this house.

Won't you volunteer?
We welcome volunteers of all skill levels to join in our efforts.  All you need is a willingness to learn.  To sign up to volunteer, call 482-7713 or visit www.hfhac.org to sign up online.

Students Dedicate Summer Break to Building with Habitat
August Volunteer GroupsThis summer, youth from across the nation traded in their swimsuits for hammers to help build simple, decent housing right here in Anderson County. Earlier this month, fifteen youth groups from Central Christian Church in Lebanon, Indiana and St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Lees Summit, Missouri traveled to Oak Ridge to volunteer their time to Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County.

Habitat for Humanity of Anderson County would like to offer special thanks to the following groups and businesses who helped provide hospitality for the volunteers: Apple Blossom Café, Central Baptist of Oak Ridge, Chick-Fil-A, First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, Taco Bell, and Moondollars Café.
