RID YOUR GARDEN OF PESTS THE NATURAL WAY!

Hydro Harvest Farms

ARCHIVES

Greetings!

The Onion Fest last Sunday and the Free Hydroponic class were both great and a lot of fun for everyone! The Florida Sweet Onions are so delicious and will only be around for a short period of time. We have tons at the farm, but they are getting pulled quickly! The classes for growing Hydroponically stress the importance of using IPM and Organic methods. Many people have questions as to how these Organic methods work. I am dedicating most of this newsletter to some info on the applications we use. IPM integrates many methods to control pests and unwanted conditions of the plants. You DO NOT have to use an arsenal of pesticides to control pests in your gardens. This is why we do what we do and the same reason everyone that buys a garden from us does so too. There are many reasons for the health issues facing us everyday. Why continue to poison yourself? You don't have too. Why continue buying produce from Chile? You don't have too. Why continue allowing your children to dictate chicken nuggets and french fries as the only food they will eat? You don't have too!  These are beautiful days right now and a great time to start your garden. You know, there is no bad time to start, but START. It's like a diet, once you start and you see great results in your health, you just keep going. Actually you won't want it any other way.

Live, Learn and Garden!

As Always, Thanks For Picking Us!

NEEM OIL
HOW IT REALLY WORKS!
NATURAL CURE FOR MANY PESTS

Does neem oil insecticide work? Some gardeners question the usefulness of neem insecticide.

They sprayed neem oil, and did not see an immediate effect. They probably did not understand how neem oil affects insects.

Neem oil does work, but the way it works is different from other insecticides. Neem is not an instant, knock down, kill everything pesticide.

Neem oil affects insects in many different, ingenious and subtle ways.

How neem oil messes with the insects' brains and bodies

Neem oil has many complex active ingredients. Rather than being simple poisons, those ingredients are similar to the hormones that insects produce. Insects take up the neem oil ingredients just like natural hormones.

Neem enters the system and blocks the real hormones from working properly. Insects "forget" to eat, to mate, or they stop laying eggs. Some forget that they can fly. If eggs are produced they don't hatch, or the larvae don't molt.

Obviously insects that are too confused to eat or breed will not survive. The population eventually plummets, and they disappear. The cycle is broken.

How precisely it works is difficult for scientists to find out. There are too many different active substances in neem oil, and every insect species reacts differently to neem insecticide.

Neem oil does not hurt beneficial insects. Only chewing and sucking insects are affected. It is certainly fascinating.

Like real hormones, neem oil insecticide works at very low concentrations, in the parts per million range. A little neem oil goes a long way.

But this is not something that happens over night. People spray neem oil as insecticide, and expect everything to die instantly, because that's what they are used to from chemical poisons. When that does not happen they conclude neem insecticide does not work.

It does work! Give it time to work. It's a much smarter way to deal with insect pests than to just kill everything.

How neem oil deters chewing and sucking insects

There is a nice story that demonstrates how grasshoppers react to neem oil insecticide. It goes something like this:

Someone did an experiment. It involved two jars, two leaves, and two grasshoppers. One leaf was sprayed with a chemical insecticide, and one with neem oil. The two grasshoppers were put in the two jars, with one leaf each.

The first grasshopper ate the leaf and died almost instantly. The grasshopper with the neem oil covered leaf did not touch the leaf and lived. At least for a few days. Eventually it starved to death.

What would you prefer? A poisonous half eaten lettuce, or an organic, untouched lettuce? It's a no brainer, isn't it?

Neem stops insects from eating the plants.

Part of this action is due to to the hormone like action of neem oil that I explained above. Insects "forget" to eat after they've been in contact with even traces of neem oil.

But it is also the presence, the mere hint of a smell of neem oil, that seems to be enough to keep leaf eating insects away. Neem oil can be very powerful as an anti-feedant and insect repellent.

This anti-feedant property is one of the most often advertised and lauded properties of neem oil insecticide. However, the hormonal effects I described above are even stronger.

Neem oil as an insect deterrent works well against grasshoppers and leafhoppers, but all other insect pests are controlled mostly through the hormone action.

The subtlety of the hormonal effects, and the fact that they may take days or weeks to manifest, makes people overlook them. Ill informed gardeners seek instant gratification, i.e. lots of dead insects immediately, rather than a balanced environment in the long run.

It's a shame, because the hormonal effect is where the real power of neem oil lies. It's the key to neem oil being an effective insecticide and good for the environment at the same time. It's also important to understand this effect to use neem oil insecticide correctly.

People eat neem leaves to cleanse the blood, stimulate the liver, and boost the immune system. So we certainly don't need to worry about a bit of neem inside our lettuce leaves. To me this is a much more attractive option than having poisonous foulicides build up in my garden.

Neem oil suffocates insects

Many gardeners use white oil (plain mineral oil) or even olive oil to combat soft bodied insects like aphids, thrips or whitefly. The oil coats the bugs and they suffocate. Neem oil insecticide does that as well. But it's more like a little bonus on top of everything else it does.

It can be a hazard, though. Of course there is no difference between suffocating good or bad bugs. Oil suffocates anything. So this aspect can harm beneficial insects!

Neem oil and beneficial insects

Neem is non toxic for beneficial insects. The main reason is that insects need to ingest the neem oil to be affected, and beneficial insects don't eat your plants. But you can still kill beneficial insects if you smother them with neem oil, so please be careful.

Beneficial insects are most active during the day. The best time to spray neem insecticide is very early in the morning, so the spray can dry before the good insects become active. Also a good time is the late afternoon or evening. Once the spray has dried it does not harm your bees, ladybugs, lacewings, predatory mites and wasps etc.

WHAT IS BT
HOW DOES IT WORK?

Bacteria are primitive one-celled organisms, which belong to a group of organisms called prokaryotes. Prokaryotes are neither plants nor animals. Like certain members of the plant kingdom, such as ferns and mushrooms, B. t. forms asexual reproductive cells, called spores, which enable it to survive in adverse conditions. During the process of spore formation, B.t. also produces unique crystalline bodies as a companion product. The spores and crystals of B.t. must be eaten before they can act as poisons in the target insects. B.t. is therefore referred to as a stomach poison.  Death can occur within a few hours to a few weeks of B.t. application, depending on the insect species and the amount of B.t. ingested.

PYRETHRIN
HOW DOES IT WORK?

The history of Pyrethrin as an insect repellent can be traced back to an early Chinese Dynasty where it was grown for sale and passed along the silk routes to Europe.

Pyrethrin is derived from the flowers of Chrysanthemum Cinerarifolium and possesses a unique combination of insecticidal properties. It contains not one but at least six distinct related insecticidal ingredients called Pyrethrins. Insects affected by Pyrethrin will try to escape from the threatening area

Safety

Pyrethrin is one of the safest insecticides known. It has a low toxicity rate and is non-allergenic .

Biodegradable

Pyrethrin is a plant based product and is easily broken down by sunlight and leaves no residue. It can be used near food preparation areas or where there may be children and pets.

Flushing action

Disturbs insects so they move out of their hiding places and expose themselves to the Pyrethrin spray. Greater flushing power than any other commercial insecticide.

Fast knockdown

Pyrethrin initially causes insects to escape from a threatening area. A rapid paralytic action causes knockdown soon after - often within seconds.

Repellency

Pyrethrin is a repellent to insects at very low concentrations.

Broad spectrum

Effective against a wide range of insects and pests.

Minimal insect resistance

Very few insects are resistant to Pyrethrin. Each batch of Pyrethrin is different and should an insect develop a resistance to one batch, over time they are effectively controlled by the next batch.

COPPER FUNGICIDE
HOW DOES IT WORK?

Natural Fungicides

Most diseases are caused by fungal spores that tend to become a problem, especially during the wet weather season. For the most part, diseases can be prevented by utilizing proper cultural practices such as variety selections, plant nutrition, pruning, and spacing. When there is inadequate circulation of air, poor water drainage, and too much dampness due to rainfall, the fungi can become a problem.

The organic solution to these problems is to use copper and sulfur products. Spores are prevented from growing because the crop has been coated with the appropriate physical barrier. It is important to make the applications prior to rainfall to maximize success.

Plant Diseases

Plant diseases are infections that are caused by fungi, bacteria and viruses.

Fungi:

Fungi are unable to produce nutrients on their own and in order to survive must derive their food from other organisms. Fungi attack all parts of a plant and under hospitable conditions, fungi can damage plant translocation tissues; killing a plant in a relatively short period of time. Some of the most common fungal diseases include damping off, leaf spot, anthracnose and rust.

Bacteria:

Plant diseases caused by bacteria are not as prevalent as those caused by fungi. Damage caused by bacterial infection results primarily in rotting of the plant tissue.

Viruses:

Viruses in plants are transmitted most often by sucking insects such as aphids and whiteflies. Viral diseases typically cause less damage than those vectored by fungi and bacteria. Infected plants typically become partially damaged and weakened, however they seldom die.

Plant diseases can spread easily and rapidly. It is easier to combat and control fungal diseases than to eradicate bacteria and viruses. The best way to prevent diseases is to take a proactive approach by preventing environmental factors that contribute to diseases combined with a healthy regimen that provides optimum health for plants.

In summary, diseases are signs of weak plants. Hydro Harvest Farms has an arsenal of all Organic methods to keep all of your plants healthy. We also practice IPM which means many problems can be corrected by careful examination and care of your plants before anything happens. If you need any information or help with your plants, call us. Also take a look at the past couple of emails in the archive, they have more info on the organic controls that we use.
