Greetings!

 tomato

Everywhere you go in Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Hardee just about any county in the area, you see tomatoes. Now is the time to pick and eat God's fruit! It is a delicious, nutritious fruit, more widely known as a vegetable. Botanically, a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum,) is the ovary of a flowering plant, therefore it is a fruit, or, more specifically, a berry. However, since it's not as sweet as other fruits and is most often served in salads or as a main dish - most people refer to it as a vegetable. More than 125 tons of tomatoes are produced in the world today.  Heirloom tomatoes are also becoming increasingly popular among home gardeners and organic producers. Heirloom tomatoes tend to be more disease resistant and produce very tasty, interesting fruits.
Tomatoes can be easily grown from seeds. Most tomato seeds that are purchased are the Heirloom varieties. Most of the tomatoes you pick at the farm are Heirloom tomatoes.

Heirloom tomato is an open-pollinated (non-hybrid) cultivar of tomato. It also refers to the age of the cultivar, although there is some debate over this definition. Some say heirloom tomato seeds must be at least 100 years old, others say 50 years and some like the date of 1945 (which marks the end of World War II and the beginning of widespread hybrid use by seed companies.) A "true" heirloom tomato is a cultivar that has been handed down from one family member to another for many generations, or a cultivar that was introduced many years ago and has been saved, maintained and handed down .Most definitely, it is agreed that an heirloom tomato is not grown in modern large-scale agriculture. The trend of growing heirloom tomatoes in home gardens has gained popularity over the last couple of decades. They come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes and are extremely flavorful.

The tomato has a multitude of culinary uses and its' high acidic content makes it very popular for canning. Joseph Campbell mass produced the first tomato soup in 1897, although the first recipe is credited to Maria Parloa for her tomato chowder in the 1872 book.

Tomatoes are high in Vitamin A and C and are naturally low in calories. They are also an excellent source of lycopene, which is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and has been linked to the prevention of many types of cancer. Lycopene is an antioxidant which fights free radicals that can interfere with normal cell growth and activity. These free radicals are what can potentially lead to cancer, heart disease and premature aging.

So, tomatoes are delicious, easy to grow, easy to save (canning) and at the peak of the season. Stop by the farm for some GOOOOOD tomatoes.

Green Tomatoes GROW YOUR OWN TOMATOES

Sure, we have plenty of the spring crop of tomatoes in, but starting in August, we will be planting our Winter crop. If you find the prospect of eating healthy and growing your own, take a look at our Hydroponic Systems. We grow tomatoes up high and let them grow down. No need to stake them. Along with tomatoes you can grow almost anything in our systems.

Our Green Thumb Garden is a great way to start and you can easily add to it and make it automatic. It will   easily grow 30 veggies and tomatoes in your garden. It takes up about a 2x4 area in your yard or patio. Everything comes with it except for the seeds.

Ag-Abilities has been selected as Florida Agriculture in the Classrooms 2009 Outstanding Volunteer Program of the Year.
John has participated in this very important and close to our heart program that the Hillsborough County Farm Bureau sponsors. All of those yummy strawberry shortcakes went to some very deserving students.
We are so happy the Florida Farm Bureau and Judi Whitson allowed us to be a part of a great program.
