10 days of knitting in Ireland.

  Sheep in Ireland

Do you want to be the best loved offspring in the world?

Do you want to treat yourself to the knitting experience of a lifetime?

Join me - Anne @ WOOL-TYME Kingston - for more fun than you can shake a shaleighleigh (or a knitting needle) at.

WOOL-TYME Kingston, through the hard work of Service Guaranteed Travel, is presenting a 10 day tour of Ireland beginning Sept 26th, 2011. The details of the tour are still being finalized, but it will include: Dublin, Waterford (including lunch and Ireland's "Pub of the Year"), Blarney for its famed Stone and Woolen Mills, the Aran Islands, Connemara, Galway and back to Dublin for a workshop on Irish knitting at Winnie's Craft Cafe in Booterstown. This is just a sneek preview and I don't want to be too precise until all details are confirmed but it sounds absolutely wonderful. And best yet, the price is very reasonable falling into the $2500 range, including all flights, hotels, many meals, taxes and nearly anything else you could imagine. So check out our blog in coming months and stay tuned to upcoming newsletters for more details.

NEW BOOKS for SIMPLE projects.

When it was time to put the newsletter together, I brought out the new books and realized that 4 of the 5 of them were all about knitting simple project, or what the authors considered simple.

- Simple Stitches - Knitting by Val Pierce is a beautiful book with many stunning patterns, but I wouldn't want to offer it to a "beginner" as they suggest, who has just mastered knits and purls. It's great for adventurous beginners and more experienced knitters  who are looking for a good collection of usable, easy to follow, yet stylish patterns.

SIMPLE STITCHES -KNITTING

Val Pierce has been a busy girl, the second book on the list is also by her: KNITTED Knitted Mug HugsMUG HUGS which is exactly what it is...20 patterns for those cozy cup covers that keep drinks warm and keep your hands from burning. Most of the patterns are within the ability of new knitters, with a bit of guidance from a friend or a friendly knitting shop worker.

SIMPLE KNITTING by Erika Knight is set up as a step by step program taking you through the execution of a hat, bag, sweater and even socks. Now this is more like it, for the beginner who wants to take it to the next level with an intelligent yet practical resource guide to lead the way.

Simply Knits for KidsSimply KNITS FOR KIDS is delightful: A rainbow of yarn meets 20 fun and practical patterns. A nice contribution to the sadly scarce patterns that are appropriate for tweens and their younger siblings.

Prepare to be Astounded

 Astounding Knits

ASTOUNDING KNITS - 101 Spectacular Knitted Creations and Daring Feats.
This is, without question, the best bathroom knitting book you'll ever see. Miniatures that are hardly visible, a knitted mile, a knitted river, Superhero costumes, a sweater of spun bear fur, knitted glasses, caps for chess men, it's all here. You'll start out looking at the pictures but you'll want to read every word...and finally ask yourself: "Why?"

Helping Each Other Out

around town.

Thrum Mitts, photo by Maria Offin

Don't you just love this picture. Maria Offin is a Kingston photographer and avid knitter. As a way of diversifying her portfolio, she asked to do a photo shoot in the store with her kids surrounded by her favourite fibres, and the results were wonderful. Also the background picture to this month's newsletter is also from Maria. Check her out on Facebook. You'll love her work.

  Student knitting.

This young fellow from E.S. Marie Rivier is just one of many students that WOOL-TYME Kingston has been happy to support in their attempt to learn to knit. This year we have been approached by 5 area schools who have started up knitting clubs during recess and lunch breaks.  Teachers and students alike are thrilled with the success and excitement that their projects bring them.

CALLING ALL VINTAGE BOOK LOVERS:

Just to let you know that we have an on-going sale of gently used old and older knitting and craft books that have been donated to WOOL-TYME Kingston as a way of fundraising to assure that we can continue the work of Project Linus.

Check out the display  and for $1 or $2 donation, you can bring home your own vintage treasure.

"Collecting Stories - The Heritage Collection at the Agnes Etherington Arts Centre.

Heritage Quilt Show

To July 17th.

Collecting Stories showcases outstanding quilts from the 19th and 20th centuries and the stories that they tell of ingenuity, creativity, community and endurance. Whether originally intended for display in a home or public space, quilts were embraced by their makers as vehicles for self-expression to produce something visually stunning.

  WHAT'S ON Anne's NEEDLES? Anne
Block BlanketEven before we had begun the Knit-Along featuring the wonderful February Lady Sweater, I was busy designing the next Knit-Along Project: this wonderful sampler afghan. I can't take credit for the patterns as they are based on stitches from the 365 KNITTING STITCHES A YEAR perpetual calendar. I can't even claim that I've knit it as it's been a groIn Progressup effort between 4 of us over the past few months, but I have been putting the squares together and am loving how it has turned out so far. No doubt you'll be hearing more of it in future newsletters.

And of course as so many of you will understand, I can't just have one project on the go at a time, so I'm also working on designing a felted purse using a strand of Cascade 220 and a strand of the gloriously coloured recycled: Sari Silk. It's coming along very nicely, ...so far. We'll see how it turns out when felted. I have great hopes.

Knitting on the NetKNITTING ON THE NET

Knitted Coffin  Well, I must admit, I'm not sure how this project missed inclusion in the ASTOUNDING KNITS book: Meet the Knitted Coffin .

Softly lined and eco friendly, it is the perfect vehicle for the consumate knitter who wants to make a dignified statement on the way out.

Robin Hunter is a designer and blogger from Toronto whose blog HowRobin Hunter to Become  A Professional Knitter has a loyal fan base and lots of creative ways of approaching knitting. One of my favourites is her 2 part series: A FIELD GUIDE TO KNITTERS. Want to learn more about the natural habitats, vocalizations and habits of your favourite knitters? You'll be a regular Audubon when you've read Robin's work:

And although Robin may not have included these little cuties in her overview of knitted wildlife, you can make a whole flock of birds, with Duo Fibres free pattern.

Heavier Cottons for year round comfort.Luna Sweater Set
Any avid readers of knitting magazines will recognize this pattern from Cascade Yarns' recent ads. It's a lovely set that is as practical as it is comfortable: 1/2 length sleeves make it cozy well into the spring/fall seasons with a lovely vest that stands by itself or pairs as a twin set.
LUNA Cotton will come as a welcome friend to fans of Mission Falls 1824 cotton, which is sadly no longer available. Luna has the same great ply and weight and works beautifully with all Mission Falls 1824 patterns.
LUNA is just one of several worsted/Aran weight cottons that would work with this great outfit. Come in and see the whole line then link to your free download from Cascade Yarns.
