February Lady SweaterCOME KNIT WITH US

For the past 2 newsletters, we've been encouraging our readers to join in the Knit Along of the famous FEBRUARY LADY SWEATER by Pam Wynne, based on Elizabeth Zimmerman's Baby sweater from the February chapter of her KNITTER'S ALMANAC.

And it doesn't appear as if much encouragement was needed as you've responded in droves...Yippee.

To date we have over 30 participants with some from as far away as Victoria, BC and the U.S. Chances are that if you're just hearing about the Knit Along, you won't necessarily want to jump in now, but you may enjoy following the progress of the participants by linking to the FLS Ravelry Group and/or by checking out the Knit Along blog page at the WOOL-TYME Kingston blog.
The final get together for this group is March 1st, so I'm sure that I'll have some pictures and stories to share by the next newsletter.
Mohair
Behold, the angora goat, from whom we get what Debbie Bliss calls Magical Mohair: "Nothing conjures up romance like the soft halo of a mohair yarn." says Debbie in the Spring/Summer 2011 issue of her magazine.
And as romance in the name of the game in February, mohair is our featured fibre.

In the past, mohair has had a bad reputation for being scratchy and shedding. Manufacturers are now producing their mohair yarns more from the fibres of the young/ kid goats to capture the exquisite softness.
Some surprising Mohair facts:
- South Africa is the largest exporter of mohair in the world.
-An angora goat can produce up to a quarter of its body weight in hair each year.

Here are our finest mohair offerings:
KIDLUXE Mohair

KIDLUXE Mohair from Estelle
I so enjoyed working with this gorgeous new kid mohair that I came up with a new pattern to share with our customers.

See below in February's FREE pattern for the luxurious Double Cable Mohair Scarf.

And best of all, after knitting an entire skein, there was very little shedding to take care of: a true BONUS for mohair yarns.

 Feather and Fan Scarf

FOUNTAIN HILL Brushed Mohair
And for those who like a little extra glamour, we have this beautiful yarn that combines mohair with acrylic and a bit of sparkle.

Kitten mohair
KITTEN MOHAIR by Sandnesgarn is our most popular mohair yarn. Blended with acrylic in a traditional DK weight, it can be knit alone to a regular DK gauge, or on larger needles to give a more draped feel, or paired with another solid yarn to lend a halo of softness and a firmer textured fabric.

Take this opportunity to give mohair a try. Although it looks delicate, it's actually warm, resilient and very easy to care for.
I have so enjoyed working with this beautiful yarn from Estelle Designs that I came up with a new pattern to share with our customers.

NEW BOOKS TO BRING YOU WARMTH

I don't believe that Vogue Knitting has ever produced a book that wasn't worth owning. And their newest: MITTENS & GLOVES follows that tradition. Every possible hand covering is rendered here with many innovative techniques, beautifully explained for you to learn.

Warm Knits, Cool Gifts

WARM KNITS, COOL GIFTS  by Sally Melville and Caddy Nelville Ledbetter.

Those of you who are fans of Sally's books: The Knit Stitch and The Purl Stitch, will find her same attention to style, design, and approachability of knitting patterns in this latest book in collaboration with daughter, Caddy.

Sally is a wonderful teacher and uses these 35+ patterns to introduce new techniques and ways of approaching gift designing when we want to share so much of ourselves with those we love, through our knitting. This is indeed a worthy follow up book to Sally's previous efforts.

The value of COWLS Isadora Duncan

 Isadora Duncan

the great dancer and choreographer came to an untimely death when the trailing scarf that she wore got caught in the spokes of the roadster that she was travelling in and died.

Doesn't a cowl, a wonderfully cozy circular scarf that wraps around your neck and stays nicely tucked in, make a lot of sense?

CANADIAN LIVING'S Feb. 2011 issue features this UPTOWN COWL and it's been extremely popular with our customers.

I love how CL has gone back to featuring so many wonderful knitting patterns, making them available for free to everyone  on-line.

Wooly Bully CowlAnd not to be outdone, WOOL-TYME Kingston features our own version of this terrific accessory on our pattern site. Check out theWOOLY BULLY COWL and whip one up in a weekend.

  WHAT'S ON JANETTE'S'S NEEDLES? Sirdar leaflet 9185Jan

Janette has been busy since Christmas, working on this gorgeous cardigan from Sirdar Leaflet 9185 in Estelle's insanely popular

Ecological Wool Heathers in the dark purple. It will be gorgeous.

I'm a big fan of working on several projects at a

time and in addition to this sweater, Janette has had on her "hook", a comfortghan for an on-line organization - Heartmade .  She has belonged to this group since just after 9/11, making comfortghans for the families of those lost during this tragedy.  There are 215 members in the U.S. and Canada.

Heartmade Blessings

Blessings

Their mission statement is  "caring hearts, touching lives, one stitch at a time."  These ghans are provided to people who have lost loved ones, or have suffered a traumatic illness.  Over 1,602 ghans have been sent out.

Knitting on the NetKNITTING ON THE NET

  10 MEN OF KNITTING

The Prince of Wales

is a wonderful article from Knitty.com that features among others, the Prince of Wales, (Edward VIII) who has come to our modern awareness with the movie, The King's Speech. (He was the one who quit the job and dragged poor "David" into the limelight). He was also known as the one who brought the Fairisle sweater front and centre as a fashion statement with this picture. Other men recognized for their contributions to knitting: Charles Dickens, Uncle Sam, Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, and of course Kaffe Fassett. Check out the orticle and see why.

Eannea Collective Welcome to the newest Canadian on-line fibre magazine ENNEA COLLECTIVE. It may seem odd that this, a newsletter for a knitting/yarn store, would want to direct you to a site that offers patterns for sale, which use handspun yarn. But a truth in business is that anything that advances the enthusiasm and interest in the activity that you're involved in is good for business. And ANNEA COLLECTIVE'S  patterns are wonderful. And the reality is that there are few people who knit exclusively with handspun yarn, and we're there to tempt them when they need a fix of "ready made". Meanwhile for those of you out there who aren't into making your own yarn, their patterns will tempt you and inspire you to come and visit us too.

Canadian Heart and Stroke FoundationBAGS FOR BUCKS-

There are very few Canadian families who haven't been touched by heart disease or stroke and we're happy, during this month of February when paper and chocolate hearts are all around us, to support the Heart and Stroke Foundation in their important work.

Diagonal scarfdiagonal scarfFebruary's FREE Pattern

This most beautiful scarf is a pleasure to knit. Simple yet elegant, and easily adaptable to any fibre and any size, we've done it here in exquisite chunky mohair using Estelle's KIDLUXE. It's been a real treat to work on.

Pamper yourself or a loved one, you deserve it. By the way, do you know someone going through a difficult time? This pattern would be stunning as a prayer shawl.
