54 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS EVE... Kingston Fibre Artists' corner

Which in most cases would be more than enough time to shop for an entire football team, but as crafters we know that there is seldom enough time to turn all of our plans into the reality of a hand crafted gift for everyone on our list.

At WOOL-TYME Kingston, we're all about helping you out in whatever way we can. Here are a few ideas:

-We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the KINGSTON FIBRE ARTISTS in an on-going display of their works at WOOL-TYME Kingston. They are a group of 15 area women whose work is truly inspirational. Come and see the stunning pieces that they have on display - browse, get ideas, buy a beautifully hand crafted piece of fibre art, feel the richness of the fibre community to which you belong.

 - Check out some of our most popular WOOL-TYME Kingston original designs that we now offer in kit form. Each kit contains the pattern and yarn for a quick and simple project, perfect for the multiple gift situation that we as knitters can find ourselves in at this time of the year.

 - Read our "New in Books" section below to get ideas for all the knitters and would-be crafters in your life...let them knit their own!

However you spend the next few weeks, I hope that you enjoy the good energy that is generated by giving beautiful and creative gifts this year.

Top Down ClassicsDo you hate the dreaded S word?

Truly, SEAMS appear to be the bain of the existance of many a knitter. Seldom a week goes by that we don't have a customer asking for new and fashionable "In the Round" or "Top Down" patterns.

The good news is that we have assembled a great
election of these patterns that are available to be worked seamlessly, in one piece. This beautiful cardigan pictured here is just one of the many stunning patterns available for those who want the gentle challenge of taking on some new knitting techniques in order to lose their sewing needle forever.

Check out the display at the store during the month of November for a full selection of Top Down and In The Round patterns and books to entice you.

And coming up in our next newsletter will be details of our February Knit Along featuring the stunningly popular February Lady's sweater which is knit in one piece from the top down and looks absolutely fabulous on everyone.

Fame Rand Sock YarnA customer asked the other day if I thought that there would ever be a problem getting nice sock yarns. I truly can't begin to imagine such a scenario. And Fame Rand is the newest of this yarn grouping. Look at the wonderful colours, perfect for any fingering weight project: gloves, mitts, leg warmers, shawls, whatever. And link here to see the great new patterns available at WOOL-TYME Kingston for each of these projects.

NEW IN BOOKS

Last Thursday, I unpacked an order of over 40 books that were chosen to satisfy the needs of all of our customers and the people they knit for. Read on to discover what's new and be reminded of some of the classics for great gift ideas.

KNIT MOROCCO with

 Jean Moss

Morrocan hatsOkay, I'm hooked. I'd never actually though of visiting Morocco but having seen the magnificent pictures of the colours and fibres of this North African region, I'd sign up in a flash if I could. It also doesn't hurt that I'm a big Jean Moss fan from way back.

For $4200 USD you can enjoy 14 days in March-April 2011 touring Morocco and getting expert tuition in fibre arts design...Sigh...someday.

AMore Yarn Will Do The Tricknd if you visit Jean's site, you'll also discover that she is a musician too. Who can resist such wonderful potential in song titles such as "More Yarn will do the Trick" or my favourite, "Four Loom Weaver".

  WHAT'S ON MAUREEN'S NEEDLES? Maureen's baby sweaterMaureen
What a fabulous time in the life of a knitter! Maureen recently became a proud grandmother to her first grandson. This lucky fellow is going to be the recipient of this gorgeous little jacket. It is Sirdar pattern 1753 and she's knitting it in Sirdar Snuggly DK which has to be the  all 'round best yarn for kids on the market. So soft, you want to wrap a newborn in it, yet durable enough to last through a whole series of hand me downs and still look wonderful.

Knit SkeletonThe Art of Ben Cuevas

Okay, so this fellow is a bit late for Halloween but he is well worth a link to Ben Cuevas site to see his latest art installation "Transcending the Material".

Knitted Jaw

I was riveted to this site and kept marveling at the knitting skill required to complete the fine work of each skeletal section.

But just as interesting is the post featuring  a review by Bora Mici of the installation and an interview with the artist Ben Cuevas

The United WayBAGS FOR BUCKS-
We have had an absolutely WONDERFUL response to our Bags for Bucks campaign over the past few months and are planning to continue making contributions to a different regional charity each month.
The way it works is that we ask our customers if they need a bag to carry their purchases. If they do then we ask them to make a contribution to the charity of the month in exchange for the bag. Most people are actually reminded that they have a bag with them or in their car nearby so by asking we have cut down our bag consumption by about 50%. Those who do need a bag are usually so pleased to contribute and consider it money well spent, often laughing at their own forgetfulness for leaving their selection of reusable bags at home.

November's charity is the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, helping out with the tail end of their campaign, which wraps up on Nov. 24th.

In the Community...

We are so happy to announce that a very kind member of our WOOL-TYME Kingston family
stepped forward to rescue, with some of her friends, the Kingston chapter of Blankets for Canada. All that to say that donations of squares, blankets and yarns to help out with the creation of blankets for the homeless will continue to be received here at the store. Waves Jacket

This is a picture of the Waves Jacket that so many of you have admired in the store over the past couple of years. It will now be auctioned off by the Rotary Club during their 13th annual Charity Auction. Link here to their  site in a couple of weeks to check out all of the wonderful articles and services on offer. (The site is still under construction but should be complete by mid November).
