BOOKS ALL ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE
Here are
2 new books which recognize the importance of knitting in our lives, and how we want projects that are beautiful, creative, satisfying and portable so you can be a knitter  wherever you  find yourself.

THE KNITTER'S YEAR. 52 Make-in-a-week projects - Quick gifts and seasonal knits by DEBBIE BLISS The Knitter's Year
Quite seriously, there isn't a pattern in this book that I wouldn't make. I'm so in love with DB's clean look and exquisite detail in her pattern designs and photography. A fine collection.

KNITTING 24/7-  30 projects to knit, wear and enjoy, on the go and around the clock by Veronik Avery.

Knittin 24/7 Veronik Avery is a Canadian designer from Montreal who
knows the value of warm knits and the meaning of a long commute.
"Many of us like to knit while we travel, wait, watch or listen, and times like these call for projects that can be easily stowed in a bag and contained in our laps. They also call for easily memorized stitch patterns so that charts are not needed once the pattern has been established."  From the introduction to KNITTING 24/7

Again, this sounds like my kind of knitting! Link here for an excellent review of this book.

SOCKS, SOCKS AND MORE SOCKS

Toe-Up Socks for Every BodyTOE-UP SOCKS FOR EVERY BODY by Wendy D. Johnson.
There is no question that knitting books are as much about the beauty of the projects and the photography as they are about the patterns that they contain. This is a very beautiful book indeed that takes the toe-up technique to the next level. Truly a pair of socks for "every body".

Around the World in Knitted SocksAROUND THE WORLD IN KNITTED SOCKS by Stephanie Van Der Linden
It says a lot about the value of this book that Alana was so taken with it when it first came out in Europe a few years ago that she actually bought the original German version, despite the fact that she doesn't speak German.
A riot of colour from Morroco, a scent of lavender in lace from France, Route 66 from the USA which uses the classic Tumbling Blocks quilt pattern as a starting point, these are just a few of the 26 designs inspired by the flavour and traditions of sock knitting in different parts of the world. I can see that we'll be reordering this one for a long time.

Need A Sock?

NEED A SOCK? from Cabin Fever
This is the book for those who want to become independant sock knitters, that is to say, not slaves to any given pattern. Using a percentage system and instructions for 3 basic socks they lead knitters to the confidence they need to take on the sock world. Lots of great tips and information.
Estelle Free Sock Pattern
Estelle Designs is also offering 2 new free patterns for 4 ply socks: a nice cable textured one and a simple lace pattern. You can never have too many hand knit socks.

Anne WHAT'S ON ANNE'S NEEDLES?
 The Solution Sweater.
Anton's Sweater I am coming to the end of the sweater that I've been sporadically knitting for my brother's 50th birthday and it has presented an interesting array of challenges and learning experiences which I intend to write about in the blog next week.

However these pictures show one of the aspectAnton's sweater #2s of which I'm really pleased: the zipper placket. I wanted to put in a 6" neck zipper that would look nice when worn open i.e. the zipper fabric wouldn't show. To achieve this I knitted a facing on the inside of each side of the opening and another one on the outside (as shown at left) and simply inserted the fabric of the zipper between these 2 pieces of knitting (picture at right) and sewed it all together. I love how it turned out.
Next challenge: the removable hood that doesn't look stupid and stays on the sweater when he wants it to.

CRAFTING FOR THE GOOD OF OTHERS.

The Get Well Gang The Get Well Gang in Gananoque is thrilled to announce that from the 6 hats with which they began in Feb. 2003, through the generosity of the area's crafters, they have delivered 16 000 crocheted and knitted hats to patients going through chemotherapy. What a wonderful success story.
Project Linus

Project Linus provides handmade blankets to children in our area who are living through a traumatic period in their lives. We have lots of wonderful crafters and are receiving many blankets but we desperately NEED volunteers who can sew in a label and wrap the blankets once they arrive at the store and before they are delivered to the agencies. It takes about 10 minutes to process each blanket and they are sent out in groups of about 10-15 blankets so if you can spare a couple of hours a month, please call the store 613-384 3951 or email us wooltymekingston@gmail.com and offer your services. The kids are waiting for their blankies.

Finally, I'm very sad to announce that it looks as if the local chapter of BLANKETS FOR CANADA will have to stop operations for lack of a volunteer coordinator in the area. This organization has been operating in our city for the past decade and has delivered hundreds of knitted and crocheted blankets to many of the area's homeless. If you or your group would condsider taking on the challenge which involves: accepting and transporting donations, coordinating the volunteers to assemble blankets from donated squares, then delivering the blankets to the city's shelters, please contact Nancy Panting at 403-329-6586
