Cary Grant KnittingEVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO LEARN
And who among us, including Cary Grant in his 1943 movie Mr Lucky, doesn't associate September with the urge to learn something new?
Lucky for you that WOOL-TYME Kingston's schedule of fall classes and workshops is now available!

A different sock knitting technique, Fair Isle knitting, improving skills when it comes to finishing your projects, rug hooking and drop spindle, designing your own knitted project, blocking, or even becoming more familiar with what the computer has to offer knitters. Each of these skills can be taken on or improved upon with the fall line up of classes at WOOL-TYME Kingston.
Link here to the full list with dates and be sure to sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Call the store at 613-384-3951 or drop in to register. Hope to see you there. EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO LEARN!

Socks from Outer Space?

No, this isn't an alien version of a foot fetish.FLYING SAUCER SOCK YARNFLYING SAUCER sock yarn is the newest and most intriguing sock yarn to hit the market since the invention of the repeating pattern. FLYING SAUCER sock yarn is injection dyed in such a way that both of your wild and funky socks come out exactly alike! Hard to imagine but watch the video on how the yarn is wound by the knitter to create 2  balls of exactly the same colourway. Fascinating!

DEBBIE BLISS IS BACK with another great magazine.
Debbie Bliss Winter 2010
Debbie Bliss has taken a (magazine) page from Martha Stewart, and run with it. Her magazines (I believe that this is the 5th one) sell out every time and must be among the most kept and reread knitting magazines around. The photography, interesting text, knitting tips, creative solutions and inclusions, and the sense of a worldwide knitters community make this the most anticipated publication that we sell.
GET IT WHILE YOU CAN!

Throwing down the gauntlet:
THE HOTTEST FASHION ACCESSORY according to Vogue KNITTING magazine is the wristlet, gauntlet or fingerless mitten.

Fingerless glovesThere is a wide variety of patterns available for these hand warmers that leave fingers free for texting, photographing, key searching, knitting, whatever. The one pictured here is our simplest of all versions which uses the "mistaken rib" (a slight variation on a knit purl combo) to make a rectangle which is then sewn up the side, leaving a hole for the thumb. See our display of these samples made in 3 of our must popular yarns and ask for your free pattern (or link here to our pattern site)

  WHAT WAS ON ALANA'S NEEDLES?
So that's what blocking a shawl looks like.
Alana's shawlAlanaI'm always amazed at how productive some knitters are. This is a picture of Alana's latest shawl.
It's the Dover Castle Shawl by Judy Marples. The pattern is available for sale as a Ravelry Download but Judy has also offered a lovely FREE pattern through Ravelry called the Calais Shawl.

Blocking is essentially the process of shaping your garment into the size and look that you want, and then by using moisture (usually clean water) and the magic of air  and pins to hold it in place, allowing it to dry in such a way that it will retain that shape and look infinitely better than when you began.
Join us for the  BLOCKING 101 CLASS on Wed. Oct 20th, 6:30-8:30
Just $15 but sign up soon to save your spot.

A KNITTING TIP

electronic kitchen scaleknitting knowledge for those who want a bit of peace of mind
 about having enough yarn.
This is one of my favourite knitting tools and I bought it at Canadian Tire for about $15. It's an electronic kitchen scale that measures just about anything with a maximum capacity of 5kg -that's 100x 50g balls of yarn (if they would all fit on the little plate) but is also accurate to within 1/20th of an ounce.
I use it quite often to make sure that I have enough yarn for the 2nd sock from a 100g ball or for a second sleeve of a sweater if quantities are getting low.

Knotty Knitters for autismBAGS FOR BUCKS

During the month of August, we asked customers to make a donation to the Alzheimer's Sociey in honour of Elizabeth Zimmermann on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of her birth. I'm happy to report that we raised over $250. It occured to me that there is no reason that we shouldn't keep this practice going and choose a different charity each month to which we could contribute. (Strangely enough it would be a good thing if our contributions declined as it would mean that more and more people would be remembering to bring their own bags when shopping.)

Meanwhile, for those who are a bit forgetful and for those who would simply like to contribute to the cause, during the month of September, we will be asking for donations for Kerry's Place Autism Services, an organization committed to enhancing the quality of life of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Speaking of knitting for autism, did you know that there are 9 Ravelry groups for those who are on the Autism spectrum and those who are close to them. Included in that group are the Knotty Knitters for Autism group, pictured above, who have rallied their "assets" to produce a calendar of knitting and naughties to support autism services. I've ordered my calendar and I'm not sure if I'll be able to wait until January to put it up.
Knit CambridgeCAMBRIDGE ONTARIO is a community to applaud. Their artist in residence for the past year has been Sue Sturdy whose goal, among other tasks, has been to solicit pieces from knitters everywhere to cover their somewhat unattractive Main Street Bridge. The knitting is done now and all that's left is to assemble and admire.

Sue is looking for volunteers to help with the installation  during the week of Sept. 7th with the grand opening taking place on Saturday Sept. 11th.
The bridge will remain covered until September 26th and I'm hoping to make the trip myself to take a peek sometime before then.
Think that you might be in the area and would enjoy volunteering for the community building venture? Call Sue ASAP at 740-4681 ext. 4376.
