 IN KNITTING BOOKS
Men's KnitsAmong the most difficult knitting patterns to satisfy the recipient is a nice, contemporary, good fitting, flattering sweater for a man. Erika Knight comes to the rescue with 20 new designs destined to be timeless classics in her new book MEN'S KNITS.
One of the things that I like best about this book is that it shows each garment on several different models, of different ages and body types, so you can really judge the versatility of the style.

AND ONE OF OUR BEST SELLERS! 60 Easy to Knit Pattern Stitches
HERE'S A PERFECT SUMMER PROJECT...one small block at a time.
At least every week, one of us is recommending this great Leisure Arts collection to a customer. The 60 Easy-To-Knit Pattern Stitches is much more than the title suggests. Yes it offers directions for all of these beautiful stitch combinations, but more importantly, it gives directions for completing a selection of them into 12" squares that can be assembled into a glorious sampler afghan that will take your breath away.

The perfect book for those who want to challenge themselves, learning new techniques and stitches by following the gentlest of paths beginning with simple knit/purl combinations through more intricate lace and cable patterns. With very little commitment, you can take on this project and make 2 squares into a pillow, 4 squares into a receiving blanket, 10 squares into a shawl, 15 squares into a throw or the full 20 squares that they suggest makes the full afghan.

  A Parliament of Owls:
 felted knitting bag
Many of you may remember this pattern from a sweater that you wore as a child, or perhaps one that was given to one of your own children...how many decades ago? Link here to a lovely blog post that shows an entire "Parliament of Owls": sweaters using this stitch design that were knit for a competition instigated by Kate Davies on her NEEDLED blog. The pattern is also available at the My Designs section of her website.

As an aside, when I was looking at this collection of photos, I moved over to the "About me" section of the blog, only to discover that Kate, a historical writer at Newcastle University in Edingurgh, has recently suffered a stroke and is supported by so many of the knitters and other fibre arts fans of her blog. How lovely that the world has shrunk to the size where we can feel such tenderness for people of like minds who just happen to be so far away.
Thanks to Karis for sending this.

WHAT'S ON
ALANA'S Alana
NEEDLES?
When the book SOCK INNOVATION by Cookie A. came out last spring my friend Kathy and I both rushed to buy it.  Cookie was already well-known in the online sock knitting community and her book was not a disappointment.  Not only lovely patterns but a wealth of information for those interested in designing socks themselves.  Kathy and I  discussed the merits of various patterns and pondered yarn possibilities.

A couple of weeks ago we were slightly surprised to realise that a year later, neither of us had ever cast on for any project from the book.  So much to knit, so little time etc. etc. but this oversight had to be corrected.  We choose the pattern Wanida and both decided to use SISU sock yarn.  Cookie's patterns are complex and textural...just the sort of thing that looks best in a solid coloured yarn with good stitch definition like SISU.  The large range of colours meant we could both find something we liked.

Alana's sock

Learning a new technique like this on the small scale of a sock is much less daunting that on a full-size sweater. And knitting-along with a friend is a great way to motivate yourself, and two kniiters are often better than one when a little problem solving is required.

ChiaoGoo lady

This lady is known as ChiaoGoo, or the "crafty lady", and she is the symbol of the terrific CHIAOGOO line of knitting needles which has recently launched a "red line" of premium stainless steel circulars.  Customers have started asking for these and have also been asking for more of the ChiaoGoo red needleslonger needles for magic looping. So here they are, the full line of 40" circulars, in stock. Look at this great design with a wonderful join that makes circular knitting a breeze.

In the Chinese tradition, red is the colour of happiness: hence the slogan for these needles is "Knit red, be happy!" From what we've tried, we would definitely agree with them .

WHY THERE ARE KNOTS IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR BALL OF YARN.
Not a week goes by that I don't hear a customer irritated or downright furious based on the number of knots that she/he has come across in a ball of yarn. It's particularly maddening if you encounter it at the 3/4 mark along a row.
I truly understand the frustration and there is absolutely no excuse for more than a couple of knots in any ball of yarn. But this little story might make you feel a bit better about living with the occasional breaks and have you pull out a meter or 2 before you start each row:
About 20 years ago, we took my oldest daughter and her friends to McDonalds for a birthday party/lunch. Part of the package was a tour of the kitchen. The kids were enchanted by all the action and stainless steel. The manager who was showing us around was obviously proud of his restaurant and turned to a poster on the wall that demonstrated how to assemble a newly introduced sandwich which included a slice of tomato. He carefully pointed out that only the perfectly round centre slices of the tomato were used (the other 1/3 of the tomato being thrown in the garbage). I was horrified at the waste, even the kids found it odd. I've had occasion to relate this story in many contexts over the years, and each time the people who hear it are equally flabbergasted.
Guess what? The single knot in the middle of your ball of yarn is there for exactly the reason that we would want Mr McDonald's manager to use up the rest of the tomato: what do you do with 1/3 of a ball of beautiful yarn at the end of the giant spool from which it's being wound?

So next time you run into 3 or more knots in a ball of yarn, return it to the store where you bought it. But if it only has one or 2 knots, consider how the knitting industry, unlike the fast food industry, is willing to put up with a few inconveniences to avoid waste.

Do you have any knitting, finishing or fibre care questions that you'd like answered? If you do, others probably have the same question too. Please e-mail me at wooltymekingston@gmail.com and we'll see about adding it to this Knitting Tip of the Month space.
May's Free Patternsoft payette shawl

Everyone who sees this lovely little shawl absolutely falls in love with it. Light, a bit of glitz without too much shine. It's a real winner. Or if the the sparkly "paillettes" are a bit much for your taste, the classic feather and fan pattern can be made using this pattern and any double knitting yarn that you choose. So many colours and textures to choose from.
