Heart and Sole
With the sad closing of S&R Department store, many of Kingston's downtown shoppers have been calling us about knitting products that they carried. After glowing reports from 2 of our customers who got their Red Heart: HEART AND SOLE sock yarn there, I brought some in and was pleased to see a good quality product to complement the colour range of our ever popular FABEL sock yarn line. Soft feel with great colours and composition.

pain in the - armholeSTYLE - IT CAN BE A REAL PAIN IN THE...ARMHOLE.

Unless you are shaped like this little lady, you should never compromise a flattering fit in favour or easy assembly.
According to "The Problem Ladies" at the Twist Collective Magazine, everyone should avoid drop shoulder sleeves.
"A set-in sleeve looks good on everyone. A raglan may also look great on you, but be sure to try on a raglan sleeve garment before commiting to knitting one...Try on lots of styles at the store or look at your wardrobe to see what suits best."
Visit the Problem Ladies at twistcollective.com
And when it comes time to sewing your garment together, if you're worried...come and see us at WOOL-TYME Kingston. For the price of a single lesson, you can gain the confidence you need to ignore dropped shoulders for good.
KNITTING IN THE SUMMER
SUMMER KNITTING
Don't stop knitting just because the thought of a half finished afghan draped over your knees makes you wilt in the summer heat. Just like there are books that lend themselves particularly well to summer reading, there are lots of great knitting projects that are just made for this rejuvenating time of the year.
Summer is a great time to expand your knitting repertoire by learning a new skill with smaller projects.
PROJECT IDEAS:
- Get a stitch dictionary (like our 365 Stitches Perpetual Calendar) and try out  a bunch of swatches as dish cloths.
-Socks, mitts, and hats are great ways to learn intarsia or Fairisle techniques using different colours.
- A light and lacy scarf is a great way to discover the pleasures of knitting lace.
-Cotton baby clothes are always soft and comfy, and appreciated.
-Consider making a sampler afghan, where each piece measure 12"x12".
TIPS FOR SUMMER KNITTING:
-A trick to avoid the stick fingers issue in the height of the heat: use a light antipersperant on your hands before you begin knitting.
-Have a couple of small and easy projects in their own zip lock bag ready to pick up when heading out to watch the kids at soccer or for a day at the beach.
-When it's too hot to go outside, take advantage of the cool air conditioning inside and dream of the fall days ahead as you work on any knitting project.

KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY
CELEBRATE WORLDWIDE KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY.
Saturday, June 13th.
What a great experience, to meet up with other knitters around the city and spread the word about the benefits of knitting!
Last year we met at Sipps on Brock St and had a great afternoon.
-Plan your own event (and let me know and I'll make sure that it's advertised on our blog) or meet up with others who are already discussing a get together at the park behind the "Woolen Mill" on Cataraqui St (see the thread on Ravelry in the Kingston group's:  "News from WOOL-TYME Kingston")

                        knitted art
We have all seen beatiful knitting that can be considered art but some creators actually do use the knitted fabric as a medium. This is Freddie Robins' piece called Skin - a Good Thing to Live In, created in 2002. Link here to other of Freddie's art creations.

NBC PeacockThe NBC Peacock never looked better.
This scene from the popular television show 30 Rock was voted this year's  funniest knitting/crochet scene on TV.
KNIFTA or Knitting in Film and Television Awards take a light-hearted look at how knitting and crochet are represented in mainstream cinema and television. Link here to get the full list of winners.

Strawberry season comes to
WOOL-TYME
Kingston

Strawberry hat

There are certain patterns that we are always re-ordering, and it occured to me that it might be a nice idea to share them with you.
This month's pattern is perfect to anticipate the arrival of strawberry season later this month.
The Fiber Trends Fruit Caps is a wonderfully versatile pattern as it can easily be adapted to represent so many different types of fruit simply by changing the colour. I have also seen it made in heavy worsted weight wool for winter and delicate DK cotton for the summer.
The Fairisle method of knitting the leaves into the hat gives beginners a chance to learn a new knitting technique without demanding perfection.

$45 for the class and $35 for the material kit.
Knitting Tip of the Month :
CARING FOR COTTON: We've all heard stories of gorgeous knitted superwash or blended wool sweaters that have lasted for decades, requiring few or no extra precautions when being washed. Lovely and comfortable as they may be, this is sadly not the case for cotton garments.
Hand knitted cotton garments do need TLC when it comes to laundering, but with these few tips in mind you can get many seasons of comfort and wear from your cotton sweater.
-Wash your sweater only when it really needs it. If the garment is looking a little tired and needs some refreshing, just mist it with a spray bottle and a little clean water and pop it in the dryer for 10 minutes.
-Machine wash cottons inside out on the gentle cycle, in cold water to avoid fading and pilling.
-If/when you do get some pilling, USE YOUR FABRIC SHAVER just like you would on a woolen sweater. It works great on cotton. (If you don't know about a fabric shaver, ask us at the store).
-When being washed, cotton garments tend to get shorter and wider. Unfortunately, because of the weight of wet cotton, you don't want to hang them to dry as they will then stretch out of shape. Here's the best solution: Lay out the garment on a rack if possible and block into shape without worrying too much about sizing (being careful not to stretch). When it is just cold damp to the touch I pick up my sweaters and give them one good shake to get a bit of extra length back into it, then I put it in the dryer for about 10 minutes. Remove it from the dryer immediately and lay on a flat surface to finish the cooling down/drying process.
Do you have any knitting, finishing or fibre care questions that you'd like answered? If you do, others probably have the same question too. Please e-mail me at wooltymekingston@gmail.com and we'll see about adding it to this Knitting Tip of the Month space.
yoga socksJune's Free Pattern

Isn't this a great idea: Yoga socks that keep your feet and ankles warm but allow your toes and heels to grip the mat surface.
And don't just make them for yoga practitioners, Their light weight yarn construction would make them great for an extra warmth over or under any socks in ski or hiking boots, or for warmth and comfort for those who suffer from foot paint.
