Mother's day Heart T Mother's Day "Tattoo" to knit
For those of you who don't know it, tattoos are addictive: you get one and suddenly your whole body becomes a potential canvas (believe me, I know).

But here's a great way to show Mom that you love her without going through the pain, expense and embarassment of looking like an old sailor: The winged heart MOM tattoo pillow pattern designed by Annypurls is available as a free download to Ravelry members, and available at the store for those who haven't discovered the wonders of RAVELRY yet.
May is a great month to remember all the people that we love, Mom's and others alike.

Spring  Sock  News at
WOOL-TYME Kingston
We've had so many people in recently, looking for the best yarns for springtime socks. Here are our favourites.
 Tofutsies
TOFUTSIES, the sock yarn that has taken the market by storm with its blend of superwash wool, soysilk fibres, cotton and chitin (a fibre derived from shrimp and crab shells that is naturally anti-bacterial.)

Cascade FIXATIONCascade FIXATION is the classic for summer socks. A perfect blend of cotton with a touch of Spandex give FIXATION just what you need to keep those cotton projects from losing their shape. (oops, link here
for corrections to last month's free sock pattern on rows 2 and 4.)
On Your Toes Bamboo 4ply SRK'S ON YOUR TOES Bamboo sock yarn has all the wonderful properties of bamboo: softness, anti bacterial and a wonderful ability to breathe, along with the strength of nylon, making it a beatiful spring yarn for socks, plain and fancy.
Finally, Patons STRETCH Sock yarn offers a fine blend of cotton, wool, elastic and nylon in interesting colour mixes that make resilient yet colourful socks.
ELASTIC THREAD HAS RETURNED!!!
For years, we've been looking for fine invisible elastic for people who like to knit it into the cuffs of socks or sweaters and finally we have been able to find a good source. Give it a try!

Do you have an inner artist/rebel?                          Tree Cozy

The picture of this "tree cozy" is found on Deputy Dog's site in a piece called "The World's Most Innoffensive Graffiti". This incredible crocheted outfit took 500 hours from start to finish, and stood for 3 years outside Cleveland Heights City Hall.
Lots of other pictures and a great YouTube video can be found there showing the group of rebel knitters in action, beautifying the world with not-so-random acts of knitting by softening urban landscapes.
Perhaps we should knit a "cozy" for each of the light standards in the parking lot in front of the store; they are boring if not offensive.
Thanks to Caroline for sending
 the picture of the tree
which is now our wallpaper on the store's laptop.

Rug hooking

It is becoming obvious that there are more and more traditional rug hookers in the Kingston area and lots of people who are taking an interest in this lovely craft. As it is, there isn't a regular meeting time for these people to get together within the city. So starting in May, "Kingston area "hookers" will be meeting at WOOL-TYME Kingston on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month (May 13th and 27th) from 6:30-8:30pm.
Please feel free to join us and share your interest in traditional rug hooking or to learn more about it.

BITS OF FLEECE

Sheep on Highway
 Sheep population on the decline.
(Could this be why?)
The 1851 census reported a total of 1.7million sheep in Upper and Lower Canada. According to the 2003 census, Canada had fewer that 1 million sheep.
Thanks to Cynthia MacDougall of the Canadian Guild of Knitters for the stats.

Knitting Tip of the Month :
NEW BALL ENNUIE  Knit Simple magazine recently featured 101 knitting tips. Among them are some of these great ideas for what to do when you need to join yarn to your project.
-When possible add a new ball of yarn at the side edge of the garment so that the join can be hidden in the side seam. Attach the 2 ends together with a double knot which is not tied too tightly so it can be undone later to weave ends in.
-If you're not sure if you have enough yarn to make it across the entire row, it takes about 3 times the width of the piece to knit across it.
-When you need to pull more yarn from the ball, unwind about 2-3m at a time; this way you will notice if you have any knots or joins to deal with in the section.
-Knots and joins within a ball of yarn are perfectly normal, and it would be wasteful for the company to throw out 3/4 of a ball of yarn because there isn't enough to finish off the required weight. This being said, when you do come to a knot or join within the ball, cut it and treat the rest as if you were joining a new ball of yarn.
-If you must join within a row (large projects, knitting in the round) tie the 2 ends together in a double knot without making it too tight and leaving a good 8" of yarn on either end. Later on you can undo the knot and wind the ends around each other and weave one end vertically towards the top of the project and the other one towards the bottom.
-Are you allergic to knots? Try spit splicing to join your natural fibres. Morcatknits tells you how.
Do you have any knitting, finishing or fibre care questions that you'd like answered? If you do, others probably have the same question too. Please e-mail me at wooltymekingston@gmail.com and we'll see about adding it to this Knitting Tip of the Month space.
