HAPPY EASTER!
HAPPY SPRING!
One of the things that I enjoy the most about doing the newsletter is that it allows me to browse the internet and discover the interesting things that others are doing with their knitting. This bowl of knitted Easter eggs is on a blog post from "Travel West Ukraine" which features a lovely selection of different creatively crafted Easter eggs from around the world.
Here are links to find the pattern to create your own knitted eggs, a great felted Easter basket and furry ducks and bunnies..
We knitters spend a good portion of our year with Christmas knitting. Next year, I'll have to think ahead about doing some Easter knitting. |
BUTTONS AND SHAWL PINS
Before Christmas we were in a real dilemma in that I wasn't able to find a nice selection of shawl pins similar to the ones that we used to carry and that our customers had come to love.
Then a couple of weeks ago I met with Gary from Hanover Ontario and he brought with him his beautiful collection of handmade buttons and shawl pins that I fell in love with.
The ones pictured here are made of red cedar, olive wood, wenge, peach wood and rosewood. They come in lots of different colours and shapes (including one that looks exactly like the logo from Star Trek).
Thank heavens for smart crafts people who seek us out. It was the perfect time to receive these buttons as I added a peach wood one to finish off my April pattern sweater perfectly. (see featured pattern at right) |
NEW IN BOOKS
MOTHER-DAUGHTER KNITS by Sally Melville & Caddy Melville Ledbetter
The authors tell us to "Knit to flatter and fit". Now doesn't that sound like something we all want to achieve? After decades of teaching, designing and writing about knitting, Sally Melville knows how to customize knitting patterns to fit a wide variety of body types. And in this new book she introduces beginner and experienced knitters alike to 30 customizable designs to fit the young, mature, hourglass or pearshaped bodies that we live in. I plan to read it cover to cover.
Elsebeth Lavold is one of the most popular designers whose books we sell at WOOL-TYME Kingston. Her latest book 17: The Small Things Matter Collection is a terrific way to enjoy knitting her intricate yet simple patterns on projects that won't take forever. Gloves, purses, hats, shawls and these cute boxes on the cover are all part of the collection. |

NEWS FROM THE CREW
THAT KNITS AT CHAPTERS.
-The Kingston Knitting Circle will be meeting at Chapters in their community room on Tuesday April 21st and from 7-9pm.
As many of us who get together at Chapters seem to be avid readers as well as knitters, we thought that it might be fun to choose a book to talk about at each meeting. This month one of our knitters will be telling us about "Three Day Road" by Joseh Boyden. Link here for a review of the book to give you a flavour for it.
And because of time constraints, some of us must make the difficult choice between knitting or reading or sleeping or tending to children or other such activities. Please don't feel obliged to make the choice. Join us anyway with your knitting and meet some new friends. |
I'm still surprised when I meet computer savvy knitters who haven't stumbled across RAVELRY yet. RAVELRY is a delightful on-line social network of knitters which offers so much in all aspects of our knitting life.
This is one of the thousands of free patterns available through RAVELRY that knitters are sharing with each other. It's called the February Lady's sweater. For Elizabeth Zimmerman aficionados, you will be pleased to note that it is an adult version of her baby matinee jacket as presented in the month of February in her collection: A KNITTER's ALMANAC. It's a beautiful sweater to fit all sizes of women, with a lacy touch for year round wearing.
Last month we spoke about "extreme knitting" with 1000 strands of yarn.
Well this month we have "Extreme shepherding". Check out this video link brought to the attention of the Kingston RAVELRY group by Jen.
If you spend any time on the internet and you enjoy knitting, check out RAVELRY; it will be time well spent.

KNITTING WITH BEADS
Don't these beads make a lovely design addition for a sock? Until recently in Kingston, we haven't had an easy time of finding a nice selection of beads. I'm thrilled to let our customers know about the arrival of "BEADAPALOOZA" in our very own mall at 747 Gardiners Rd.
Trina's beautiful store is open 7 days a week and is well stocked with all kinds of treasures for you to discover.
Our May newsletter will feature an easy knitted bracelet/necklace pattern that sparkles with a lovely selection of beads. While you're waiting for it you can check out this video to learn a simple way to add beads to your knitting and the following video shows the method of stringing the beads before you knit with them.
It's always so fun to learn something new!
