Teach Yourself

If you like to take some time in the summer to learn a new skill, this could be just what you're looking for to learn the basics of the 2 major techniques that add colour to your knitting. "Intarsia" is the means of incorporating a picture into your knitted fabric like the cat on this little girl's sweater. "Fair Isle" is most easily recognized as the colour technique used in the Nordic sweaters, where a few colours are carried and used in repeated patterns across a whole row. This great Teach Yourself Book offers fashionable patterns and a whole series of great tips for those who want to add some colour to their knitting lives. Knitted Gifts

Also for great summer knitting ideas, and/or to get ready for the holidays and for charity bazzars in the fall, Better Homes and Gardens KNITTED GIFTS is a wonderful collection of everything from knitted face cloths, to golf club covers, to a pampered pooch pillow, to a beautiful man's diamond sweater. I really like this collection and am sure that many of you will find lots of patterns in it's pages to keep you busy.

So even if you aren't planning an intergalactic trip anytime soon, take a virtual holiday by visiting PlanetPurl.com

sale yarnsale yarnJUNE IS SUPER SALE MONTH.

I was lucky enough to recently come upon some great yarns at terrific prices and was able to scoop them up to bring them back to Kingston, just for all of you. Some are early Noro yarns that are exquisite, some are like these mohair blends at the left, others are more sophisticated delicate yarns like these subtle slubbed summer yarns to the right. And they're all at a fraction of their original price, just waiting to go home with you.
And of course, this being Inventory Sale Month,  we are offering a further 10% off, but just until the end of June, so come on in while the selection is still good. You're bound to find something that catches your eye.
Fun Things Just In
Regia Sock StoppersNew from Regia, the king of sock yarns, is just the thing that you need to jazz up your kid's socks and keep them safe too: SOCK STOPPERS. Each pack of easy to use, iron-on, anti-slip transfers is enough for 4 pairs of socks. They are machine washable in warm water and are as cute and fun as can be.

knitted soccer ball
One of the most interesting (and sometimes irritating) things about the internet, is that once you've put something out there "on the net" it will stay there until you go out of your way to remove it. An advantage of this is that someone who went to the trouble of developing a pattern for this knitted soccer ball for the World Cup in 2006 has not bothered to remove it, and if you click on the ball you too can link to the pattern and try your hand at some pretty sporty modular knitting. Let me know if you take it on. If you start soon, you can have it ready for the Olympics this summer...or wouldn't it make a great project for this year's version of the Knitting Olympics???
   DANCING WITH SILENCE
LONELY GIRLThose of you who have known me for a while may remember that a few years ago I finished writing a novel about a young teacher who is struggling to deal with her own childhood experiences. The latest on the book is that it is now complete and available to read on-line at www.dancingwithsilence.blogspot.com (I find it ironic that it took me 3 years to write it and a full year just to upload it onto the net...nothing is really fast when it comes to computers.) I often have people asking me"... Whatever happened to The Book?" Well now you can see for yourselves. It's my gift to anyone who has struggled in life.

ANY IDEAS FOR SUMMER CLASSES?

I will be preparing for classes that we will be offering over the summer in the next few weeks and this is where you can help out. If you have the time and inclination to learn a new technique, let me know so that I can include it in our offering. I am likely going to be having another "sock-in-a-day" workshop some Saturday in July and a "Learn-to-knit for complete beginners" in August. Any other suggestions? I'd love to hear them.
small world
IT REALLY IS A SMALL WORLD
For those people who consider that the Internet is taking the place of good old fashioned communication to the detriment of our human relationships, I have been struck in the last little while by how  it has allowed me to stay  connected with my customers, even when they're away:
-A few weeks ago, I saw an article in our local newspaper by one of our regular customers. I sent her a message through "Facebook" only to receive a reply from Malawi, where she is now working.
- Another customer who regularly takes classes with us had left for her  winter in Mexico with directions for several projects to keep her busy while she was there. One of the patterns however was giving her some difficulty and she was able to contact me by email and we got it all sorted out. (Which was much more economical, by the way, than the $52 collect telephone call from my daughter when she was in Mexice, telling us that she had gotten sunburned on her first day there.)
-Finally, one of our young customers sent her mom who is a civilian worker for the military in Afghanistan,  a project from our store with a copy of our diagonal poncho pattern. The mom, having never seen it, was having difficulty understanding how it would work and was able to ask me, again by email, for some more details.
-I've also had a chance to communicate with people from all over the world who are among the 87,000 or so visitors to our FREE PATTERN WEBSITE. The Internet  really is an amazing development in our world.
